There's a lot of people complaining about violence in video games, fictional violence in most of the cases, but when the violence is real you, americans, want to glorify it.
OP I find your argument poorly elaborated, the main issue here is that no criminal should appear as paradigm for young people, and not a comparison of the gravity of crimes. In the end a crime is a crime and a criminal should be punished and no rewarded, Ok he spent his time in jail for what he did, but is too soon to just forget about it, he has yet to prove that he really has changed, and that can't be achived just catching and throwing a ball.
