I always disable mics completely on Xbox Live unless my friends are on for this very reason. As for PC games, I just mute players I don't want to listen to on a case-by-case basis (I just wish they would allow players to block text chat as well).

I wouldn't say I "hate" it so much as I'm just tired of hearing it. I've been playing online games since 2002, and the trash-talking and racial slurs haven't changed a bit. I grow weary of the endless virtual dick-waving and stupid machismo posturing. Apparently there will always be whiny 12 year olds and douchebag frat boys when multiplayer is involved though.

I never hear any of it... There's something called "Party Chat" it lets you bypass all the douchenossleness of XBL and replaces it with friendship!

It's an unfortunate staple of online play now we have mics. It is predominantly a problem with the Xbox though. The PS3 ain't too bad on the games I have played but then again hardly anyone seems to have mics. I tend to find it funny but if its annoying I just turn off my mic.

For me the two worst ones that make me instantly take my mic out or mute are the people who play loud shitty music over their mic, even worse when it is just distorted, and those who just won't stop singing or making noises over the mic.

Well I would, but for this funny little thing. You see, I have no microphone. Hilarious, no?

I don't play FPS games so i have not yet experienced what you speak of, but if they're anything like normal trash talkers then i fiind them a constant source of amusement

Well, under certain circumstances, yes.
Last night, me and 5 friends were pub stomping on Black Ops, we trashed talked, but only if it was a blow out, for example, we won 200-0 on Domination.
We ran into another full party, and they thought they were hot shit, but we beat them in TDM 7500-4000.
They called us trash for using only olympias and skorpions and ragequit.
Lulz were insured.

I play with all voice communications muted. I like to play multiplayer games to music, unless I need to hear someone's footsteps, and the last thing I want to hear is someone throwing the entire extended edition dictionary of expletives across the voice chat.

If they don't have the patience and the manners to type it politely it'll never reach me and I'll never have to choose to ignore them.

I like them, it always brightens my day to hear the little shits scream and rage as they lose. You don't even have to be better than them, they can get you 8 times, but it's worth it just for the accidental headshot that sets them going.

The best ones are the ones who send you messages saying that they're going to get all their friends to report you so you get banned, or that they're a master hacker who's going to ruin your account/life (I don't know if they mean they're going to track me down and mess with my real stuff, or they just think that your xbl account is all there is to life). They always seem to turn up a week later on the xbl forums in the banned section because it turned out they broke a dozen rules in front of an admin.

I usually find it more amusing than anything else. I'm not a troll but I see their viewpoint in that I find it funny when people get angry over stuff that's on the Internet.

This seems like a ridiculously obvious question.

Who the hell would like trash talkers?

I hate them until they can meet my one demand.

"Walk it first. Then do it again. Then you can talk."

Seems fair,in my opinion.

Why do they do it?
Because it is a competitive multiplayer game you are playing I am guessing. Competition brings trash talk. This whole thread is talking trash on trash talkers. Trash talk really shouldn't get to you otherwise the strategy is working. People who are good at trash talk are great fun to have in the game. People who suck at it are mute-worthy.

Who cares?

This is why God invented the mute option. Don't PC Gamers have this option too? I'm pretty sure they do.
PC gamers have that, but they also have something even better: moderated dedicated servers. I've run into something like three ragers and greifers combined in the last year, and they were all quickly dealt with by the admins of the server -- aside from one instance. This one was the fabled 12 year old squeaker, and he was on a Half Life 2 Deathmatch server that didn't have an admin present at the time. I started talking to him, asking him things like "what would your mother say if she knew you were swearing like that?" and he eventually calmed down and stopped the raging. It was a good day.

Trash talk can be loads of fun, though when it's just people bithcing and random slurs (mexican jew lizard?) it just gets really old really fast. And if you have an obnoxious voice...just don't do it.
