Well, I'm in quite a dilemma here.
On the one hand, I called some random guy on GTA 4 a bludger the other day, but on the other hand, I can't stand those that are just outright arseholes.
Can I justify with that I was just trolling? I don't know. :/

Anyway, I don't like trash-talkers who have no reason to be, but it's not like I care what they say. I like me and that's good enough.
And if it's CoD and they get onto my team, it's trap in the corner time. :D

Trash talkers on CoD

Never above 1 KDR

Do the maths.

If they QQ about the FAMAS I roll with either a FAMAS or an ASP.

Depends on if they are good at it or not. If they can back up their talk and/or say really funny things, I don't mind so much. But if they're whining about how everything you kill them with is OP and how you're a noob or a cheater or whatever, then it's mute time.

I don't mind trash talkers. I actually find them pretty humorous sometimes.

What bugs the hell out of me, though, is when people on your own team flip out over something small. Like the other night on Team Fortress 2, we were playing CTF on Double Cross, we had four spies and only three people actually defending, so I suggested that we put a bit more effort into defending our base from the pesky Soldiers and Demomen that kept sneaking in and spawn camping us. These two people flipped out, saying that I'm probably just a n00b that thinks he can tell people what to do, to shut up because we're winning, etc.

I love them because it's fun absolutely destroying them after they talk trash. The shame you can sense from them after you smugly point out how utterly humiliated they just were is worth all the shit talk in the world.

Generally it's the bad players who feel the need to talk trash. Good players aren't insecure, so they have no need to point out their superiority... they just do work.

"What the fuck are you trying to do, snipe? You need to take that dick out of your mouth so you can see more than crotch."
"Look, I'll stop calling you a fucking retard shitface if you stop using the noob toob, ok?"
"Hey, your mom called, she told me to tell you to grow a pair as big as mine, *****."

These are my 3 most commonly used insults when playing CoD, and some trash talkers *cough*fiveyearoldswhatthefuck*cough* annoy the shit out of me, but I am one.
10 bucks says I'm going to get warned for this, and no offense to anybody.
Congratulations, you are the reason the online gaming community has a bad rep.

I thank God for the mute feature on online play. Too many people I just want to shoot without having to listen to them.

I love to treat these guys with kindness - while at the same time pissing them off in the game, if I can. My favorite example:

"F U Monster!!1!!"

"Thank you for your concern about my sexual well being!"

TBH I haven't really encountered any trashers on Halo Reach. Don't know about any of the other games though.

I'm used to trash talkers.
I tend to mute based on how they sound more than on what they are saying. You can swear and sound like an idiot, but if your microphone is messed up and your undeveloped voice scratches through it, I'll mute you. Maybe grief.

I wasn't even playing against anybody... The real trash talker was my 14 year old brother sitting 10 feet away playing MW2... I've never wanted to punch someone more than him... I kid you not with this when I say he dropped the F'bomb 94 times in 1 minute...

What if I've never encountered any because I only play multiplayer with friends I know in real life..?

I suppose that means I don't mind them at all. Reading "overheard on XBox Live" is a nice bit of schadenfreude for me.

For the most part I ignore them but depending on the type of trash they're flinging at me I occasionally respond and rip them a new asshole via watertight arguments for why their lives are shit.

Best example was a Brit (nothing against the British I just don't remember his GamerTag) who trash-talked me for having a "shamefully low GamerScore" (about 12000 at the time) His GamerScore was above 100,000 so I set some time aside to remind him why having an incredibly high GamerScore bloated by playing pissant downloadable games was completely stupid when compared to having a job, friends, and generally a "life" like myself. His counter-arguments were along the lines of "fuck you" and "your mother" etc.

Long story short, I do it to have fun and mess with people. I know people who do it being serious, and cant stand them, and I hope I dont come across that way to others when I'm online
This is pretty much me with friends, it doesn't even have to be just gaming. Since I do it during sports as well, adding to hilarity that we often have. People who are serious are just plain annoying, as they do it with more of a degrading humour that only is funny for the one doing it. (even then, I find it quite dickish)

Just troll 'em. Act like you've never played the game before. Say positive things about universally hated topics (Twilight, Justin Bieber, etc). My personal favorite is to methodically deconstruct everything they say in a calm, collected manner, thus rendering them speechless by making them really angry. You've reached the pinnacle of trolling when one of the shit talkers rage quits.
Sadly, I haven't been able to do that yet.
