I like it IF it's not just milking money with some maps and a character with mustache.

Three words: Quit your whining.

DLC is a good way to monopolize on the success of a game. That's it. It's just game companies making the most out of the online marketplace, because, like anything else, gaming is a business.

Borderland's DLC for PC was even worse.

Not only late, but also stealth activating SECUROM. Come on...
With Borderlands, I just want to see all those playing non-legit copies banned from steam/gamespy. And personally, the DLC for Borderlands is amazing and I love it, and I want more. :S

I just wish PC gamers would grow up. And I am a PC gamer. :s
Are you defending SecuROM? Or maybe you just don't understand PC gamers at all? Because no PC gamer would really defend a crappy, bugged and punishing the legal players DRM... hell, any DRM except for Steam is idiotic.

Wait..wait...wait...

I bought the game, because it DIDN'T have Securom, and that it's a good game. Are you saying they just forced Securom on me? Because now my .exe's bigger, and I'm finding out some hidden details in the 1.1 patch steam forced me to DL.

Please for the love of god, tell me my findings are incorrect.

If they are correct (if you don't know say so) Could I get a refund from steam?
Same reason I bought it instead of just downloading off torrents: because I thought the developers actually cared.

They don't. Also I can't buy the DLC, because direct2drive doesn't sell it and official sites accept only Credit Cards, no Debits or Paypal. Dozens of PC players are getting refunds or just not buying DLCs. I bought the game on d2d, so I can just NOT patch it, but someone who bought from Steam...
Yeah, I thought it was a move showing they CARED about their customers.

Isn't Steam ENOUGH freaken anti piracy?

No they shove Securom down my throats, and I'm now working on my refund...*RAGE!*

I'm no longer buying anything from Gear Box, if they are willing to flaunt not having Securom, only to force it on us in their patch. That's utter and complete Bullshit.

I only like it if it comes out later, for example if the developers think of something late (or al least looks like it, like in Halo 3). I just hate it when it's released alongside the game immediately (like in Dragon Age: Origins)

So companies are paying much more for game development and we're paying relatively the same so I say let them release all the DLC they want. What would you prefer that they tacked on the price of the DLC and add it to the original retail price basically forcing you to have the DLC even if you dont want it?

If they're going to have downloadable content, it should only have a price tag for those who buy things the second its released. Maybe after a few months or something they should switch it to free. That or we all start modding our Xboxes and laugh at Microsoft or something

If there is one thing I can't stand about games these days, it's DLC. All it is is a way for companies to milk money from players who just want more. I paid 60 damn dollars for my Modern Warfare 2, and now I'm supposed to dish out and extra 10 for some new maps? And I need to pay 10 bucks to play some stupid zombie game that should have been in Borderlands in the first place?

The only games I feel that have justifiable DLC are Rock Band and Guitar Hero. They're dishing out new songs every week, so it's not like they can give it to us all on the disc. But what about those stupid additions to other games? I already paid you money, why are you leaving a piece of the game out just so you can charge me for it later?

Well rant over....what do you guys think of it?
Do you know how much songs could have been fitted on the original release discs? And how many DLC is prepped before game release?

It fucking sucks when the developer basically pisses on the consumers and milk them for cash by either withholding content to sell it later or make the content as such that the game you originally bought loses value if you don't buy the content.
Example of this is Halo 3; I didn't buy all those map-packs, and the time I didn't have them, I was unable to properly enjoy multiplayer. Matchmaking was stripped down to half of what it was when I originally bought the game, thus actually making the game lose value if you didn't pay up.
As I understand it, they've recently reversed their position on this?

I am unaware if it is permanent or part of some promotion.

As long as it gives enough content for the price I'm happy!

The worst I've seen is that bullshit on the 360 Katamari game when you had to pay for a key to unlock levels ON THE GODDAMN DISC!

They're downloaded for a reasonable cost*, and saved directly to the hard drive?

I only hate DLC when the developers plan it before the game is released. DLC should start being made once most players have played through everything the game has to offer.

Is your user name a reference to the Megadeth song that came from the riffs Mustaine wrote to The Four Horsemen?

If so... kudos.

OT:
I was very glad to have new stuff to do in Fallout 3, but I have been underwhelmed by most DLCs.

YEAH, DLC SUCKS AND CAN SUCK A.....wait, there's a Modern Warfare 2 map pack out!?!?!?!? *rushes to buy*

Actually answering the question: good DLC is good, bad DLC is bad. Some companies have figured out how to make good DLC (Rockstar, Harmonix, Bethesda, Bungie to some extent), while others see bad DLC as a way to make easy money (totally NOT talking about EA here. "Timesaver Packs" that unlock everything that you'd UNLOCK IN THE GAME ANYWAY for $20 are TOTALLY ok in my book).

EDIT: there's no MW2 map pack out.....WHY WOULD YOU LIE TO ME!?!?!?!?

No flames.
You know, I've seen a million people type the words.phrase, "Please don't flame me, Flame Shield up! etc...." ad bloody nauseam but nobody ever gets actually flamed on here. This is the Escapist. We have a current troll population of nil, and only a minority of fucking idiots.

The majority of us type properly, understand the word "opinion" and don't bother flaming anyone since it's a banning offense. Kind of gets to me that people think they need to protect themselves from insults just because this is the Internet.

Seriously. This is the good Internet people! You don't need flame shields!

Yeah it is, Four Horsemen is my fave song so I know the history behind it :p.

Rock Band has passed 1000 songs (or close to it). Yeah they could fit more onto the disc and if you look at the forums that is what a lot of people are asking for. But 1000 songs does not cost 50 dollars, and with the instruments it certainly is not that either.

Maybe it's the amount of DLC that gets to me. When there's maybe two extra "packs" to download, meh, I guess if I want it. But more than that it just gets tedious, why should I have to keep paying money to keep seeing the cutting edge of the game, when it could have been released it on disc? Think of it like this; Borderlands releases new DLC every month, each costing 5 or 10 dollars. What the hell? No one wants to pay that kind of money each month unless I'm getting the full MMO experience.

I think it is okay if the original game is complete. If they make 12 maps for multiplayer and then charge you for two, then I don't agree with that. And I mean they actually have it ready when the game launches. If they release something with plans to develop further content over time, then that is reasonable.

I love it when it's free. Like, remember MechAssault? It had tons of free DLable content, and only a little bit did you have to pay for.

There's your first mistake, you should have simply not bought it lol.

Otherwise I think DLC is a great idea, so long as the add-ons aren't overpriced, because without new content, people will simply buy the game, beat it, and then leave it on a shelf for the next 5 years and never look at it.
