I judge DLC on a case-by-case basis. Some DLC (I'm looking at you here, Fable 2) sucks, and isn't worth the price. However, some is fantastic (Shivering Isles, for instance).

If there is one thing I can't stand about games these days, it's DLC. All it is is a way for companies to milk money from players who just want more. I paid 60 damn dollars for my Modern Warfare 2, and now I'm supposed to dish out and extra 10 for some new maps? And I need to pay 10 bucks to play some stupid zombie game that should have been in Borderlands in the first place?

The only games I feel that have justifiable DLC are Rock Band and Guitar Hero. They're dishing out new songs every week, so it's not like they can give it to us all on the disc. But what about those stupid additions to other games? I already paid you money, why are you leaving a piece of the game out just so you can charge me for it later?

Well rant over....what do you guys think of it?
I agree, if game developers want to add something to the game that they didn't originally think of, it's not the consumer's fault, therefore the update should be free. Microsoft is infamous for doing this. When the Fallout 3 DLC came out, I was pissed off to the point where I stopped playing the 360 and converted to PC gaming. (This made me realize just how much I was being ripped off.)
Switch to the PC: PC games are $10 cheaper, the DLC is free, the servers are better, you don't have to pay to play multiplayer, you can use a mouse and keyboard, and, obviously, the games can be played on any computer as opposed to the console games that can only be played on said console. With all that said, I don't know why anyone would buy a console, besides for the exclusives.

oh i know how you guys feel, one day you boot up your game and your suddenly not allowed to play it, just says insert £10 to if you want to use this game ever again. Oh wait... their optional.

Most map packs arn't worth it however some dlc like those on fallout, guitar hero etc are great. Luckily for me i seem to realise these are optional and don't have to spend my money for stuff i don't want.

Do you know how much songs could have been fitted on the original release discs? And how many DLC is prepped before game release?
O ok so then you just don't know anything about having to pay for licences do you? They can't just release DLC for free they have to pay the record labels for distribution rights. That's the reason that if you want to transfer Rock Band 1 songs between Rock Band 2 you have to pay 5 dollars.

In almost every instance of DLC since Horse Armor I have found that the content both extends the gameplay and, as a result, my enjoyment. In some cases, the asking price was hilariously steep - the DLC for Saints Row 2 will offer a total of 2 additional hours of entertainment and costs something on the order of 17 bucks.

I have no problem paying for additional content for a game. I have never once seen a game with DLC on offer that seemed as though it was "missing" content until I got the DLC.

Get rid of DLC and bring back proper expansion packs like they had back in the day. Fuck paying an extra 7 quid every time 3 new halo maps come out, I would rather have paid 15 quid and got 10 new maps and an extra campaign mission. Hell Gears 2 got it right when they released the All Fronts pack, which could be considered a proper expansion.

I personally don't like it because for one, I can't get internet on my PS3 for some reason and its like I'm missing out on part of the game.

I'm still pissed about the parts of Oblivion I can't play because its DLC exclusive.

Yeah, who the hell wants to actually get paid for the work they do on games? Fuck 'em, they should work for free and not ***** about giving us all the extra content we want without us ever having to pay a dime!

Pssst.. the L4D2 boycott already failed, you don't have to do this anymore. :)
But clearly, the sentiment hasn't :p

Okay... here's an example of good DLC: The Stone Prisoner for Dragon Age: Origins. Sure, you're thinking... all it adds is another party member to the group for $15, but that's until you realized that Bioware had voiced all of Shale's interactions with you, the PC, and the other party members, and other NPCs. And then there's the fact that Shale has some unique abilities that even other golems don't have. They even added a whole new level to the game just for this character's backstory.

Now... as an example of bad DLC:
In Oblivion's Arcane University, there is a door labeled "Arcane Observatory", and even if you use the console to unlock that stupid door, you'll just end up in an empty room. That is until you cough up $5 for the "Arcane Observatory" DLC. While this is cheaper than the last example, this is bad DLC because it is an example of content that was deliberately removed from the game to milk more money out of us.

I think it's completely justifiable. Video Games have been more or less the same price for the last decade or so, and have failed to rise in price as costs increase. DLC is a way to off-set this. It's less abrupt and dramatic like the $10 price increase for Modern Warfare 2 when it came out.

However, even though it's justifiable, I still don't like it since it means I'm spending more money on the same game. If it can keep me from other games, so be it, I actually save money. But not if the DLC is worthless, like the stupid Evil Lair and Tomes crap I bought for Oblivion on Xbox 360.

When I think of downloadable content, I still think of the kind you don't have to pay for and therefore I LOVE it. Downloadable content is the number one reason to play Team Fortress 2, and I'm not talking about Valve's updates (the second best reason to keep playing). I stayed away from consoles for a long long time because games like Counter-Strike and Quake III Arena kept rendering new surprises in the way of maps and mods. If the same open-ended design philosophy could someday come to a great console title, someone is gonna have a cash cow on their hands.

I'm always against paying more for less game and often times with DLC that is exactly the case. There's also the peer pressure factor to have all the same maps/mods as your friends.

Then explain to me why there are free packs as well?
Because I really can't imagine EA or Activision willingly taking a loss there.

Took the words right out of my mouth, Funk. Why do people feel entitled to content, that the development team spent many long hours away from their families to create, for free?! To say that it is missing content, that you should be graciously given on a silver platter by the developers because you generously paid money for their product, is an insult. Most extra content is developed after launch, meaning that it is impossible for it to have "been missing" from the game. Also, most DLC is made following consumer input, designed to improve the gameplay experience.

The ultimate proof of the shameless self-serving nature of modern gamers lies in the simple truth that these are not necessary to play the game! You do not have to buy them if you do not want to! If you want those new maps for Halo 3, then you by all rights should have to bloody pay for them. Upset that you can't play certain game types online because they require all DLC? Well then make a choice; buy the DLC or stop complaining.

my only issue with DLC is when a company like Capcom releases DLC that's on the disc, just need to pay to unlock it.

To me, that crosses the line.

Also when a game promises free DLC (from a collector's edition or New game purchase) and it doesn't deliver.

Or when a game is released in a shitty/unfinished state and requires Pay-DLC to be playable/finishable/fun.

Other then that, it's icing on the cake. I mean, there wasn't DLC in the previous generations. Once you bought a game, that was that. There are plenty of games out there that are worth their 60 dollar price tags, and then you can get some DLC for a little extra as they're released. There are some GREAT DLC out there. GTA4, Fallout 3, etc. etc. And I don't think we should throw the baby out with the bathwater. Don't get rid of the awesome DLC just because you don't like the crappy DLC.
