...says Lead Designer Mike Laidlaw. http://bit.ly/eKRRSv

Or is that dumbed down? Not played the demo myself yet but the more I read about Dragon Age 2 the more I worry it's going to be a hack and slash style of occasion.

Have you played it? Is it 'more welcoming'? Or do you it has just been dumbed down?

It feels more welcoming, but could use better camera, when I played the demo...

I loved it, I say it's a huge improvement over the first. Not that I hated the first (i'm playing it now) but there were aspects to the combat that made me want to facepalm very hard. The classes balancing was non-existant, and while I loved, LOVED being able to tank around as my mage, i felt mildly frustrated that most of the warrior's classes were completely and totally useless.

Finally, there is one thing I have gone on-and-on about since day 1 of dragon age: I don't feel like i'm actually contributing to combat when melee combat comes into play. the game plays itself which really isn't a good sign. I end up sitting there tapping the 'a' button over and over because it makes me feel that i'm telling my warden to swing her sword.

Dragon Age 1 is a great, GREAT game, but not without its flaws. Dragon Age 2 will likely be the same. So I don't feel that it's dumbed down, no more that Mass Effect 2 was.

This is like saying "You're not fired...you're just allowed to explore new opportunities of employment".

"?Whoa! Too complex!?" ...?

Great. There goes the rest of my respect for Bioware.

The demo is dumbed down. Am I the only one bothered by the move from realism? In DA, people moved like normal people. In the demo as a rogue, you are flipping and moving inhumanly fast. Yes, they made the game hack n' slash friendly. Honestly, the guy's comments read like "We want more players, so we toned down or cut out a lot of the RPG elements. But it is still a RPG!". Not really. You can't have it both ways Bioware. If you want to move a game away from being a pure RPG, then that is fine. Just don't lie to your fans about it. They did the same thing with ME2.

well, playing dao made me pause and issue orders, making the eventual victory all the sweeter for the effort put into it.

da2 makes me laugh with how hilarious the darkspawn and ogres look and now stupidly over the top the animations are.

so, its kinda apples and oranges to me; i can sure as hell bet the hilarity of da2 wont entertain for nearly as long as dao's gameplay though. well basic rpg gameplay has been replaced by physical humor, so i suppose its dumbed down.

Having played the demo, if it starts the way it does (more or less, with of course more character generation), I would say it's more welcoming.

Haven't played the demo, but it sounds like this 'dumbing down' is actually making the game faster paced. Something the original direly needed.

I say bring it on.

I haven't played the demo, but I'm being optimistic, so I'm going to say more welcoming.

What kind of URL is that eh?
Nice try making me click on it by being vague as heck in what you're talking about.
A smaller one so it doesn't sprawl out across the page. They're pretty common on Twitter. (Ignore the fact I can't quite figure out how to add hyperlinks here :( )

I still want to remain skeptical about Dragon Age 2, but I'm hearing so many bad things about the demo, it's starting to worry me.

Hopefully the retail game will be good, but from the first moment they announced the dialogue wheel in Dragon Age 2, I feared they will dumb down the game just like ME2 and it seems that's exactly what happened. :(

Severely dumbed down and exaggerated. It plays like Diablo on steroids, and not in a good way.

Still, the RP-element seems to be going strong.

Don't worry, it's just the original URL shortened. If you look on bit.ly, you can put any URL in and it gives you a shorter when when you share links.

I am yet to play the demo, but I have downloaded it..

They can call it whatever they want. They can put pretty flowers all over it and give it cake but the correct term is dumbed down for action-adventure fans. It shows almost no respect for real RPG fans. Especially the dialogue wheel. I hate it.

Why is there so much unleashed hate against the dialogue wheel in both DA2 and ME games?

I like it, it's a nice change of pace from my character having no voice and everyone responding in shocked outrage at what *I* thought was yet another snarky comment

I only skimmed through the demo (wasn't that interested) but I didn't feel it was overly dumbed down. I mean, the interface looks more smooth and the skill trees might be a little simpler (although I don't remember DE's being overly large either). But otherwise it just felt like it was easier to pull off a "I hit 1 button and win!" action if you don't want to micro-manage a battle, which you could always do if you wanted to. To me that says 'more welcoming', since a similar layer of depth appears to be there if you just kick the simpler options aside.

Because real RPGs use lists of text and change is scary. (I like the wheel as well)

Not sure. Voted more welcoming but really, so far the only change I like is the speed of combat.

It's safe, I checked.
