Depends on the game. If it's a "realistic" style game I play it on the hardest difficulty. If it's a game where being on the harder difficulties makes you die in a snap and take forever for the enemies to kill, I usually play it on easy. After all, all I'm after is to blow shit up :p

I generally play the game on the "Normal" difficulty setting. Though if a game throws a challenge at me that I can't get past after a few tries I'm not afraid to set the difficulty to easy for a bit until I move past it.
Then if I revisit the game I'll play it on a higher difficulty setting, since the challenge from getting to know how the game works and what I can do to exploit the system is gone.

Generally I play on normal, sometimes moving to hard if the game is sufficiently well-designed that hard isn't just a needless chore full of cheap shots.

If I'm playing on easy it's because I just wanted to chill out with a game I've already completed, and see how fast I can get through it, or whatever.

I do easy if I want to get through a game fast, or if it's my first time playing and it's a game whose controls I'll need to get used to.

For games I've already played once over, or sequels, I tend to step it up on subsequent playthroughs to give myself some challenge if I'm bored.

I play on normal first and then if I care enough about the game I will replay on harder settings.

I believe that achievements/trophies should be unavailable on easy mode. At all. Afterall, its not much of an achievement if you gimped the game to "earn" it, now is it?

Depends on the game. Touhou 06 is currently being played on Easy, but I'll work my way up. Others are usually just on the normal difficulty.

It really depends on if i've ever played a game like it before. when I first tried Halo: Reach, I played it on normal, due to my experience with FPSs
but when I first tried Oblivion, I was like, Whoa, i'm gonna get my shit wrecked, i've never played a game like this before!

I also adjust the difficulty if the game becomes unfun. there was one Mission in Reach where I kept dying. It was getting boring so i was like "fuck it, call me a sissy, i'm puttin it on easy!!"

Well if a game has no achievements based on difficulty, I play on easy(it also depends if I want the 1000 gamerscore) ually, I can count on one hand the games I have beaten on their hardest difficulty by myself(as in no co-op): Mass Effect 2, MW2, Star Fox 64.

Only for goofing off really. When starting off I go for normal, then to hard if I like it enough. If I still want to play it more I'll want to see how bad I fuck stuff up on easy since I've beaten it on hard.

I always play video games on the easy difficulty setting. I don't really care about challenging myself to beat a game. I want to experience the story and have fun when playing a game. Playing a game on the harder difficulty levels has never been fun for me.

Never... I been gaming too long for Easy difficulty.. Normal is the lowest I'll go.

Some games must be on Hard mode for full enjoyment though...

BUT.. I draw the line on hardest difficulty when it becomes more work than fun.

If it's too difficult, you stop focus on the atmosphere, story, characters, plot, and everything and focus everything on fine-tuning your gameplay to not die.

Now that isn't exactly the kind of enjoyment that the first-time playthrough is supposed to bring about.

I play on Normal, or, in generic CoD-style brown FPS, I enjoy playing on a level above Normal. Hardened, in the case of CoD.

But! As a child, I used to set everything on Easy. Also I spammed cheats from the very beginning of the game. Not anymore, thankfully.

I usually play a game through on a relatively easy setting first (normal - I'm not a complete wuss), for the sake of the story. Once I'm finished though, I'll go back and play it on a harder difficulty.

/edit That said, I still played CoD and Halo on Hardened and Heroic, respectively.

It really depends on the game, but I always start a game on normal.
If the game is too hard, then I'll dial it back to easy, but that is only for games I am completely unfamiliar with.
If I have been playing the series for a while, like Halo for instance, I'll start on the harder difficulty right away. I played Halo 3 on heroic my first time, and started Reach on Legendary. It was tough at times, but I never got to a point where I was pounding my head against a wall.

For the games I play, playing on easy isn't really that fun at all =/
For any Halo game, you can just about go through the entire campaign by just meleeing stuff. The flood take alot of hits (Halo 1-2), and vehicles are irritating, but its the only way the game is entertaining on easy.

Playing a game on easy is like throwing money down the drain, next to just robbing yourself of a decent game play experience.

Games tend to be about our protagonist going up against a relentless army of [INSERT SPECIES/FACTION HERE]. When you can just read a book and mow down wave after wave of evil stormtroopers with the weakest starter gun there is i don't care how well the dialogue is written, you are fucking up the immersion.

That, and i like a challenge.
I don't believe that. As long as I enjoy the story and the game-play of a game than I consider it to be money well spent. Playing a game on the harder difficulty levels has never been fun or enjoyable to me. I consider it more fun and enjoyable to play a game on the easier difficulty levels.

Hard mode. As difficult as possible. And, its been this way ever since PS1.

I remember my easy mode days, and I look upon them with shame and scorn.
Playing a game on easy is like throwing money down the drain, next to just robbing yourself of a decent game play experience.
This. You may as well shout "SPOILER ALERT" to yourself if you play on easy mode, and you plan on re-playing in advanced difficulties.

Now adays I tend to go straight for hard, but that's so I can mash out all the difficulty trophies in one run, or cos I fancy a challenge.

Once this is done though, I go through on Easy so I can either catch up on the story, or go through like a death-dealing, magic-casting, empire-building God Emperor or Mankind.
