Around here at this time of the year, there's three reasons for the power to go out. The most common is if a thunderstorm knocked it out. When that happens, I usually just read a book until the power comes back on, maybe light a candle or two if it's a nasty enough storm for visibility to be a problem in the middle of the day. If the storm isn't too bad, I might crack a window or go sit out on the porch so I can listen to the rain while I'm reading. These outages rarely last for more than an hour or two.
If it's a rolling brownout/blackout from higher than usual strain on the grid (read: people blasting their ACs all over the place), I'll grab a book if it lasts more than a minute or two, but more than likely need to do nothing but wait a couple of seconds for the power to come back on, and a few minutes for everything to boot back up. If it's really out for a while and it's a nice day, I might go sit out on the porch or lay out in the hammock while reading. I'd definitely open up all the windows in the house to get a cross breeze going, because otherwise the place would turn into a solar oven pretty darned quick. Again, even when this kind of outage does last long enough to interrupt one's day, it's only going to last an hour or two.
The third (relatively) common reason for a power outage is more serious: a hurricane. During the string of hurricanes we had in 2004, the power was out for weeks at a time, so I had more pressing matters than what I could do to entertain myself while the power was out. This is especially true because my house has a well, which means when the power is out, so is the water. Realistically you know when these things are coming, which is why I made sure my gameboy was well charged before they hit, but for the hypothetical, I'd probably once again be reading a book when I'm not doing things like cooking dinner on a coleman stove and trying to eat as much of the food in the freezer as I can before it starts to rot. When a hurricane hits hard enough to knock out the power, it's not pleasant.
