It's like what NGE would've been if it hadn't stopped taking its anti-depressants.
HIgh production values throughout, more mecha battles, story, characterization, a non-wimpy main characer, no asuka, he can understand it for the most part without consulting the interwebs.

That guy is an arse, then. Evangelion was really good, despite the epic mindscrew and Freudian imagery.
Evangelion is my favorite anime of all time. I first saw it when RM were an actual format for distributing fansubs *shudder* and nothing has changed my opinion on the series/movies/manga (and I doubt anything ever will).
It is also a series I use to introduce friends into anime when all they've seen is the standard DBZ/SM/Ninja Scroll/Pokemon (and Pokeclones)/anything shown on North American TV, etc.
Call me a fanboy/flame away/whatever, I don't care. It's my series of choice and I doubt anything will change that
(though I dislike the fact that they changed Asuka's last name in 2.0)
side note: I am still all grrrr over YTV butchering/editing Escaflowne when they showed it years ago -_-;
