Hope it is a good match. US give Brazil a lot of cold sweat in the final of the Confederacy Cup

America won't win with that defence. I know they work better for the US than they seem to do so domestically but, especially with the injuries the back four currently have (apparently) they won't be able to hold back England. In England, Rooney is being lauded as the key to England's chances to win the World Cup, but he wouldn't even be needed against the USA. I was very impressed with the USA last time I saw them in the Confederations cup, and they managed to beat Spain who are a better team than England (who have been unconvincing in recent friendlies too) but I can't see the USA being able to contain Lennon/Defoe's pace, Jole Cole's creativity and Rooney's sheer energy. A high workrate can work to suppress Spain due to what appears to be a frankly one-dimensional game plan (which is incredibly difficult to counter, admittedly), but I don't think it'd be enough to contain England, as long as there isn't a repeat of the Mexico/Japan performances.

I can see USA easily getting at least a goal, especially from Donovan who really impressed me in the last games I saw him in, and I reckon it'll be a fairly close game. But I'm confident England will win, although I don't think they stand a chance of winning the cup.

I can't believe we are bringing Heskey and expect him to goal hang as much as he can and eat the grass. OK Bent didn't do great in his tests but at least he has some pace and imagination. Hell, he came third in the PL "Golden Boot" this year whereas Heskey didn't even make double figures.

And we picked the worse possible goalie as our number one. Hart had some amazing games at Birmingham.
Well said that man!

The papers here would have a field day if we lost to the US.

For me it's not about the game, I can watch football but I'm not massively into it. It's more about the national pride at stake. I'm aware many of this generation don't see the point in taking pride over something that we have no control of but something deep down at an instinctual level longs you to clan up with fellow Englishmen or whatever nationality you are and hope you look good on the world stage. It becomes part of a national culture.

If we play Argentina, Germany or Portugal at any point in the tournament, the atmosphere all around the country in the hours before the game will be electric, shit, if we get Portugal in the quarters again, that will be a harshly tense day.

That, to me at least, is what makes the World Cup worthwhile, it's perhaps the one thing we as a people can unite over. It may seem odd in America, where there is already a large amount of national pride.

Anyway, I'd like England to win, on paper we have the best team in the group. If any team are to beat us in the group it will be the USA and I think that might be a good thing.

England is going to win, no doubt. They just beat Mexico a few days back (which made me sad) at like 2 to 1(or was it 3 to 2?).

I live in Nottingham which has the world's oldest football team (Notts County) which I'm proud of. And yes, England did invent football as we see it today. You could also say Americans didn't invent basketball, the Chinese did. But we don't say that because Basketball as we know about it is completely American.

I think the only none European teams to look out for are Argentina and Brazil. I suppose the Ivory Coast have a chance with the abilities of Drogba and Kalou. (Yes I am an avid Chelsea fan xD)
County are the oldest league team, not overall (sorry but I'm a Forest fan, and there was no way I'm letting that slide)

Back O/T however, I think it'll be a tight game that will leave many suprised, why we play with wingers is a complete mystery since there is no one good enough to play on the right. I'm praying the formation will be 5-3-2 with Hart in goal, Cole and Johnson wingbacks

Chances are the USA will. I'm English, and I'm not even sure I want to support them. It's not that they don't win everything all the time, its the fact that they always seem to give up when the going gets rough.

I remember watching the Ivory coast playing against Germany in the qualifiers. In the latter minutes of the match Cote D'ivoire was winning 2-1. Germany flung everything and I mean EVERYTHING up towards the other end and in the 90th minute they scored and it ended in a draw. Thats what I want to see. I don't care if we lose as long as every player can put his hand on his heart and say that he tried his utmost. But it never seems like that is the case.

I'll be supporting Germany and England in the World Cup anyway. Why? because I am half German and proud!...and I am praying that England will somehow pull something out of their arses!

I think the team that actually calls football 'football' will win. Bloody Americans, the rest of the world calls it football, why do you have to be different?

[sub]That was a joke by the way, not a rant.[/sub]
Eh you know, same reason we don't loot riot and blow up our own workplaces cause a guy kicked a ball into a net three times...

I'm a proud American, but I'm not gonna be too optomistic here. England is just far too talented to lose this game. I'm sorry my fellow Americans, but we aren't going to win this game. We just aren't good as a nation in terms of soccer.

Straight from wikipedia-

Notts County Football Club (often known as Notts or County or by their nickname The Magpies) are an English professional football club based in Nottingham. They are the oldest professional football league club in the world, having been formed in 1862.

EDIT: Ah I see! I apologise I thought you said they aren't. My bad.

Ignore!

Well, if I was a troll, you should have no problem ignoring me then. Which, I really don't think is the case in this instance. I said three comments ironically, then stuck around to take responsibility for them, especially once I realized that people where taking them seriously. You are the one who is being confrontational, I never had that intent. I thought that the idea of someone being confused about the world cup thinking it was a giant football tournament would be funny for both myself and others on the boards, but this was apparently not the case.

I mean, if I were a troll, I would just keep up what I was doing because if my goal was to get you riled up, it was apparently working, but I realized that, and tried to explain. And trust me, watching someone get mad over a fairly innocuous tongue-in-cheek comment rather entertaining, much more so than explaining things out like this, so, trolling at this point would be easier and more fun, but as I said, that was not my intent.

Now, on to you. When you come on these message boards, what is your intent? Do you come on hoping for a little anger rush and a fight, much like a guy taking steroid tends to do when going out to bars? Because, that is more common than you may realize.

Just thought I would change the subject so we can move on, and maybe learn something about you as well.
You stopped because of the fact you were about to get reported and now you are continuing trolling in a different sense. Arrogantly insisting that you are teaching me something about myself over and over, knowing full well that you are being annoying. So enjoy your reported and following punishment, I am done with you.

//ahem

Many women watch football (and shout abuse at the ref/other players/own players) routinely =D

To outplay England you really do just need to nip out our heels, the players are used to a longer passing sort of play and if you harry them like caffeine powered terriers it puts them off. If anything it then makes them kick long and high crosses to Crouch who will inevitably "climb" on the defenders to head the ball.

We don't play with enough pace off the break (which surprises me as it was how Man Utd with a somewhat weakened team took the PL. Van Der Saar was master at getting his people on the run again).

And let's be honest. We couldn't score past Japan. Now I wouldn't fault them for their pace or their enthusiasm but tactically and in terms of skills they are a little behind. And we couldn't get one by them. That was pathetic.

It never failed to amaze me that two friendlies before go we still didn't have a squad. We should have had a locked down 11 to open to play together as a cohesive unit and not still be experimenting with 4 or 5 across the mid-field. Our defensive don't seem to trust one another enough and are exposing the goal.

The USA does have some decent players and I sometimes wonder if the "killer instinct" is trained in to young american atheletes quite young. If you take tennis where a single player is easier to look at you had your Pete Sampras who took the court expecting to win every tme and out Tim Henman who would ibevitably choke. I question the desire of our team to do well.

Play against England with pace and snap (not literally) at their ankles. I do think that the USA could cause an upset and although English would rather like them too if no other reason that it might be a wake u call after some dozey friendly.

Oh and inventing a game means nothing. We invented cricket and are often beaten and we intended tennis and haven't had a champion in decades (and are not even on the horizon for the women's game).

Honestly, watching the World Cup and playing a drinking game I like to call "That guy is a pussy" is fun and hilarious. Basically, you watch the game and anytime someone takes a dive you drink... simple really. The dives can be really funny though, some of the crap they think they can get away with.
Must be tough watching the Italians & South American teams; you probably can't get through the first ten minutes without passing out! ;)

Edit:...or run out of booze!
Lucky for me I wasnt drinking when I watched the match were Zinedine Zidane went nuts, I would have needed a liver transplant. :D

I come from the UK and I intensely dislike football (I do love Baseball, American Football and Ice hockey though). I don't particularly care who wins either.

I'm English, and follow Football, but I really hope England don't win the world cup. I know that sounds really unpatriotic and that I'm saying it for attention or something , but I have legitimate reasons.

First and foremost the players in the current England team are; to put it bluntly, human-shit. They're overrated, overpaid, morons (have you heard the way the talk) - if you hear the number of stories about them abusing their position as celebrities (Joey Barton - although he doesn't play for England - being a prime example) and hear how spoilt and pampered they are, having a high place in society for kicking around a ball...it's pathetic, to the point that I believe such people don't deserve to achieve the ultimate success.

Everyone knows England won the world cup in 1966 - everyone knows the names of many of the key players in that team - do you really want the likes of John Terry, Steven Gerrard etc to be remembered in such a favourable light? Hypocrites that have contributed nothing to society but tacky newspaper headlines should be remembered for decades over a sporting event. Of course, it's the sort of thing the media builds up, but that doesn't make it right - the players attitudes towards such attention, and the impression they give to the younger generation (Wayne Rooney's constant swearing and hassling towards the referee) displays role-models we could do without.

So for that reason I hope England do not win the world cup (that and idiots use such sporting events to make themselves feel good), however I do believe they'll beat the USA; if only because England get lucky (see the recent game against Japan).
Thankyou for summing up my feelings on the England football team. It saved me a lot of time. The english football team don't deserve to win, I heard that they were terrible against Japan from a friend.
