Giant bugs are a staple of RPG's. Always have been, always will be, just how it is.

At least most games are nice enough to use Spiders and not something like Scorpions or some other chitinous or exoskeletal critter that would be neigh impossible to harm with conventional weaponry if they were bigger than say, a golden retriever.

If you buy Skyrim for PC you should be able to mod the spider into something else. :p Like an adorable puppy.

I'm terrified of spiders. But somehow, that makes kicking their assses even more fun.

That, and it has a tendency to be b-movie awesome (EDF! EDF! EDF!)

But they are somewhat of a fantasy cliche, I'll give you that.

well if there's any positive side from this thread i can pull out is...

game is becoming more realistic ^^

OP: ridding giant insects from RPG's would be a horrifying move to the genre D:

I am not scared of spiders in real life and yet dragon age spiders scare the hell out of me, specially when playing at 3 AM.

00slash00, there have been giant spiders in games for a while. Hexen 2 had them Dark Messiah: M&M , you could even say that Headcrabs are a variation of them (albeit missing a few legs). They're common and they're good to kill as you don't feel sorry for the ugly, jumpy raisins.

It would be nice if there were more dinosaurs instead.

agreed,

I blame my own fear of spiders on a game I played when I was younger. The spiders where one of the enemy's you had to fight. They where big, moved fast and difficult to dispose of. It didn't help that their bite took a enormous chunk out of your hp bar and they often ambushed when you turn around a corner.

That game ofcourse was ... harry potter 2

I don't get this spider thing. I live in Australia, which is massive spider central, but most of them aren't even dangerous. Seriously, most spiders would rather run and hide than get near a human. A freakin' bee is more vicious than a spider is, little kamikaze bastards.
One of the reasons I don't fear spiders, but I'm terrified of bees and hornets. They will take the fight to you.

-snip-

has anyone else had their fear of something specific, prevent them from playing a game, or am i just a massive wimp...or both?

Your a wimp, but a wimp for good reasons, spiders aren't to be toyed with.

The reason their more common now they before though, its 3D my friend, spiders are badass and full of effort visually, what with eight legs and them individually moving and all, sure they existed during the pixel ages but they were sad sad pixelated dust bunnies and combat that looked like, well everything was a mario brothers with different color schemes, but crushing a spider in 3D, now thats a visual joy, so many legs and eyes to rend, pleasing squish/crush on impact sounds, and menacing anarchist-ish feeling roles even as common enemys, hell arachnid's pretty much jumbled and spliced into the word.

I am terrified of spiders (in real life) myself. But the in-game ones never scare me. I don't find them scary at all.

I don't think we get hornets here in Australia, but we do get wasps. They look like hornets, but are more yellow and sting multiple times AND have venom that can be pretty deadly to children and the elderly. And the bastards are quiet as night, they don't make any noise and you don't know they're there until they sting you. Wasps are predators worthy of fear in my opinion, not spiders.
Off topic but you ditched your Naoto avatar? I used to read all your posts in her voice! Not that I have a problem with Fluttershy, of course.

All fantasy has giant spiders. It's a law.

Also, even though I am afraid of spiders, I've never really had a problem with spiders in games. Every once it a while I find some that sort of creep me out, but never anything that would keep me from playing the game.

Wow, is it really all that hard to distinguish between fantasy and reality? Is there some sort of break that prevents one from saying "Ok, there is no such thing as a spider the size of me" or "this is not a spider, it is nothing more than a series of wire mesh triangles wrapped in a texture image"
I remember someone in my psychology class was talking about how one of their friends was a Marine sniper in Iraq and Afghanistan. Now when ever he plays Call of Duty and looks through the scope of a sniper rifle, his training kicks in and it is like he is back in the Middle East.

It does seem odd that 00slash00 is afraid of virtual spiders but, if the phobia is bad enough, it could happen. One thing that I learned in psychology is that psychologists use virtual reality to help people conquer their fear of heights and so forth. My advice for you slash is to not only think of it as a game, but think of it as a way to possibly conquer your fear.

We get wasps too. They are quiet. Too quiet. And the avy switch is only temporary. Decided to troll people who have a problem with MLP after we had 4 threads going in one day. Naoto will be back soon.

Not really noticed an increase to be honest, but I have to admit there were a couple in DA2 that were HUGE. Still wouldn't stop me from playing a game though. After all, it's only pixels...

more and more fantasy rpgs are going unplayed by me for one simple fact: I am cripplingly afraid of spiders.
I was once like you- I hated spiders in RPGs. But I also hated Magic. And Fairies, and Orcs and fantasy in general. Then I found an RPG that I could truly enjoy. One that cut the crap and showed me the way. You too can follow the path, but it is a path you can only go down...

The reason something is called a phobia is because it's irrational. Some people can't even look at pictures of spiders. So give him a break. You may not be affected by it, but some people are.
Like me..

Pictures? Geez, if I see a shadow of anything that could even possibly on another plane of existence resemble a spider, I freak out. I was swimming earlier today, and the sun created a shadow of the palm tree. When I saw it, all those spiney leaves, I freaked and jumped out of the pool.

Don't even get me started on twigs....

Or wires/chords..

or even the hairs on my other leg. I can't even begin to tell you the amount of times I've crapped myself when I accidentally brush 1 leg with the other :p

its just spiders. like even in real life if there was a spider on one side and a scorpion on the other, i would be more worried about the scorpion hurting me, but the spider would cause me much much more fear. its completely irrational and i remember being fine around spiders when i was really little. then one day it seemed like all of a sudden the very thought of a spider made me shudder

I considered posting the picture of the giant spider here, but then I remembered that I'm not that evil.

It's a shame that you're going to miss out on what looks to be an awesome game just because you don't like spiders. You should really learn to overcome your fears.
thank you for your mercy!!!!
