People will find anything to make themselves feel good. I suppose the only thing is when you have a lot of posts it means you've been able to voice your opinion for a while without becoming banned.

As a person who signed up very recently, I'm shit scared to even post a new topic because of people's reactions. Not that I care about anonymous people mocking me of course... :p

In all seriousness though, it does feel a little.. inbred? It's like there's a small community of people who act extremely pompously, who make (by the standards of The Great Cyberspace) unreasonable demands of the spelling and grammar skills of posters, who laugh at those who've come across something that's new to them, who expect everyone to read The Great Essay of Ruling within five minutes of joining, who don't like overgrown sentences with lots of commas, etc. etc.

Not that I'm bitter! Now can I join the Higher Circle?
Quoted for truth.

Only certain members show extreme Elitism, and for the most part, like to show off just how "clicky" things can be around here. But, just about everyone else knows that they're on a forum after all, on the internet, and understand that pretty much everyone is equal.

Unless of course dey type liek dis. Then they must burn.

I'm afraid your opinion isn't valid as you have less than 5000 posts and thus don't have a title as good as mine.
Oh yeah?
Well, your opinion is even less valid!
Hah! Relative judgment wins again! X-D
-snip-
You sir, have a ludicrous amount of posts.

OT: You just noticed?
<_<
It's okay. I've long since come to terms with the fact that I have no life.
^_^
Besides, elitism or not, this place is addictive as hell.
Haha Can't argue with you on that one.

I do think we jump the gun on calling people trolls sometimes.
Often, it seems to me that the accused was just a confused, new, or unthoughtful poster, rather than a troll.
Lol. How about the "i liek poo" thread that just popped up? Was that a confused, new, or unthoughtful poster? I think not. Sometimes we are very very right.

By the way... do you know what happens when you hit 20,000? Has anyone ever done that?

Good.
Your dealers are doing their jobs.
At least you two are aware of your addiction.
That's the first step.
The second step is deciding that you should do something about it.
Obviously, I have not taken that second step X-D

No, he's just a Moron.
Plain and simple.

I cannot tell you the answer to either of those questions yet.
But I want to find out.

I read so much more than I post on here. Hence my low count, but I've never had someone call me an idiot for having a low post count.

I keep trying the second step but they keep convincing me there is nothing wrong with me and it's just natural to post here a lot...

I just got an email...it asked me if I really wanted to stop, and I had to say no...
They went all out for you!

Flaming new users has nothing to do with post count, most of them don;t know the rules and break them. Which isn't to say more experienced users don't, but new users typically are guilty of more major offences than more experienced ones (I still get nailed for low content posting)
Exactly right. I don't think it qualifies as elitism to notify someone that they're failing to adhere to the guidelines of that particular forum. In a way, it's helpful because those who have made a genuine mistake can fix their post/thread so that it doesn't break the rules and thereby save themselves a lock, probie or suspension.

It's all well and good to say The Escapist has unreasonable expectations of its user base compared to the rest of the Internet, until you realize the owners of the website are the ones who decide what is and isn't appropriate, and the way they relate that to us is through the guidelines.

Elitism isn't so much what you do, it's how you do it

I've seen it on far too many forums and much more severe cases at that to really consider calling the ignorance/arrogance of some people on the The Escapist elitism. I've experienced worse people in my everday life to even care about it. So I do what I've always done, I ignore it.

There is some elitism, I posted in a thread where the original post asked you to sum up your feelings on something in one word. I responded with one word and within minutes had been told by six different users that one word answers were frowned upon and that i should read the guidelines. Now the original question asked for a one word response and it was the first time I had ever gone against the guidelines, yet as the posts went on people seemed to be clambering over each other to point out my mistake. Another one is the sheer volume of people who will post "this will end in/start a flamewar" yet three pages later there has been no flaming, just loads of people predicting a non-exsistent flame war. rant over.

Jeeze.
Why don't I get the special treatment?

The problem with elitism is that it's too much fun :p

But seriously, the Escapist does have somewhat of an elitist problem. I try and get along with people, but I bring the hammer down on those who deserve it (trolls, flamers, those with a different opinion :p)

One day it shall bear the word BAN upon it!
