Poll: Escapist Mobile Version?

I would really dig an Escapist iPhone app.

Yeah, it doesn't necessarily have to be a mobile version of the site, just something to make some of the features more accessible to phone users.

The EVO certainly is a very shiny toy, but I can't make the move from Verizon to Sprint, eh, my Incredible serves me just fine.

I'm not saying I don't trust him, I'm just saying I can't see any reason for him not to tell us why it's a bad idea, I don't think he's obligated to tell us, but I also don't think I'm obligated to not ask for it when nobody has given me a reason why it shouldn't be done.

I'm sure he'll be more than willing to tell you why it is not viable course of action.
Although, he may have already said why in one of the threads in the Publisher's Club.
I could imagine the reasons why it would be unlikely to happen...

I would use it. But I have seen this thread before and for some reason the Escapist staff say it can't/shouldn't/won't be done.

I've never quite understood why, but that's what I've heard.

I just use the web browser on my Droid, and it's tolerable. But I far prefer my laptop.

It's not for use in the shower....it's for use while I'm not home, or a passenger in a car, ect.

There are so many tools now for making mobile versions, and it's becoming more important as smartphones grow in popularity, I'm not sure if his reason is as valid as it used to be, at the very least I believe it to be dated.

Mobile version of the Escapist - Again, crazy amount of work for relatively little payoff. Another generation or two of mobile devices and having separate versions of a site for each will be mostly pointless anyway. I regularly use the site on my iPad, and I know that there's a bunch of people that keep an eye on things with their phones.

Amusingly, the only major thing that doesn't work on these devices is the one thing that would be most beneficial for us - the front-page grid editing tool I built for our editors. It's all drag-and-drop, and the JavaScript libraries don't work with touchscreen devices.

There you go. Hope that clears things up, as you now know Virgil's reason.

Well that's the first problem, Evo is a CDMA phone (with wimax, I'm in one of the cities that can use it and loads up the Escapist quicker than my home internet). If I remember correctly, GSM phones need a different version of the processor than CDMA phones.
