Wait wait, you actually have to train yourself to be social?
Whatever happened to the good old days when I was a lad and when you called a girl stupid she called you a meanie and then 15 years later your married?
The internet, cyberbulling, reduced inhibition of teenagers, kids having sex/doing drugs earlier...shall I go on?
Kids aren't doing drugs/ having sex earlier then they did hundreds of years ago. It's just with the media and technology you hear about it more often.

I've been playing it for a while now, I got a 70 paladin and an 80 Death knight. I've tried to quit but everytime I do the damn game drags me back a few months later. I still regret ever installing it.

I played WoW on a private server (to avoid paying monthly fees) but there were hardly any people.

It was pretty shitty.

Welcome to the Escapist. Expect fun speeches.

OT: I don't play WoW for but one reason: It costs money monthly. I'd probably play it otherwise.
Guild Wars?
Guild Wars is many times WoW's better, but somehow WoW still beats it.

This I never understood.

Guild Wars is many times WoW's superior, but for some reason, it got to be more popular.

I've yet to figure out why.

I've never played it, but I have a feeling I would love it, which is exactly why I refuse to play it. I could use the time and money.

I play it, but not religiously. I can proudly say that I go see that yellow fiery orb in the sky every day not from the comfort of my home, but out in the streets, where life and death hang figurative millimeters from each other. o_O

But I don't pay monthly, I get a game card whenever I feel the urge to, which is usually a few months after my subscription ends and the withdrawal symptoms start getting to the point where I've sorted out my sock drawer 18 times and still don't know what to do with myself.

I tried the free demo, but it came down to me being cheap and having a short attention span...

I played WoW for two years, had a Mage (Undead) and a Priest (Blood Elf) at 70 before WotLK, after getting them to 80, trying out a Death Knight, raiding for a while, and doing just about everything there was to do in Northrend, I got bored and stopped playing. I might try it out again sometime and will probably play for a while when Cataclysm launches, but for now, at least, I've found more interesting games to play.

"I cannot stand WoW for reasons beyond my own comprehension." Is the closest to "Afraid of trying it, liking it, and getting addicted." That and the fees are the reason I don't play WoW.

I'm pretty sure nobody that was around during launch is still playing WoW now. Me? It had its run and I was addicted for some time, but I moved on. so goes with MMO's. I'm now playing Global Agenda and don't plan on going back to Wow, Warhammer, Planetside, etc. etc. That's just how it is. And something else will probably come around to replace this.

Played it for two and a half years - from about quarter-way through BC until last week.

I had 4 80's (Warrior, Warlock, Paladin, Priest) multiple other high-level alts (none Death Knights) - I've raided from 2/6 Sunwell pre-3.0 to Putricide/Bloodqueen in ICC25 and most hardmodes in between (alas, no Yogg+0 or Tribute to Insanity).

Stopped playing as most of my friends had - removed the main social aspect of the game, which was the main reason keeping me playing. So I left and moved off to play EVE, where I know a fair amount of people that I met on other games.

Enjoying EVE it so far.

I started playing just before AQ came out (late '05), played for a few years, then quit at the end of 2007. I went back to it about September last year, played for a few months, got a new 80, then quit. Now I'm back playing on Dreadmaul with friends.

I played it during Vanilla and that started up again with the Burning Crusade. I originally started it with my brother and I loved it. It was new and interesting, my first mmo and pretty standard fare for an RPG. Burning Crusade added some new things and fixed a bit, but being a student I really didn't have time for it anymore. My brother still plays Wrath and they've streamlined a lot of stuff and made it more casual friendly, although like all MMOs, it's a total time sink and grind. Yea, the game is getting better and 1-60 lvling is supposed to be streamlined in Cataclysm. But unless you're in a raiding guild, I don't really see the point in playing the game seeing as you'll see all the content once you hit max level and while you're leveling the game isn't anything special that you couldn't experience with any other game.

Not too mention that story wise, compared to most traditional games, just isn't there. There really isn't any sort of overarching story or narrative. Just a bunch of mini-stories that start and end in each new zone. Don't get me wrong, the game is pretty fun, but if you've got the money to blow and already have a steady internet connection you'd probably get more fun out of a solid online FPS.

Although, if for some reason you HAVE to play an MMO, I'd play WoW as it pretty much outshines all the others out there right now and is pretty casual friendly.

Well, it's the same is it was in the victorian era and the 90's, but it's alot more discreet now.

I've had an account since about 6 mo after the launch date, never quit.

That said, I only have 1 lvl 80 character, so I suppose I'm pretty casual. Probably why I never got burnt out on the game after all these years

I haven't played it because I refuse to pay for any MMO where there are subsciption fees.

I don't play it, but I may try it as soon as they stop requiring a periodical payment.
While I used to be in the same boat as you guys, after trying it for a few months you'll see that it is definitely worth the monthly fee. There's simply so much content, and the fact that they keep adding new stuff every couple of months means that you will never run out of thing to do. Assuming you like the gameplay it's a much better deal than buying a new game every month.

There's no option for someone who hasn't played it, doesn't want to know about it, and doesn't want to play it

I like having at least a semblance of a social life
