I tried to play it, but I didn't see anything that anyone could remotely call fun. People get addicted to this? Really?

I just didn't find it entertaining, and frankly, I liked Runescape better.

There should be a "tried the free trial, got addicted but don't want to pay" option?

I played WoW from release till almost one year ago, with a few breaks for a month or two in that time. Vanilla was great, BC was really good too, but I didn't like WotLK. I ended my WoW career with an 80 warrior tank (39k hp wewt loved my Barricade of Eternity) and 80 DPS Death Knight both had mechano hogs and the warrior also had a traveller's mammoth and 20k to give to the DK for one as well. I made sooooo much gold by blacksmithing it was sick (in WotLK, I was always poor in vanilla and BC - farmed my ass off on dailies for my first epic flyer).

In vanilla, the dungeons were the best IMO - long but really good (UBRS, Scholomance, Strathlome...) in BC I liked the pvp a lot (not so much arenas) and the heroics required keys. Did my first taste of raiding in um.... whatever that place was called... Then WotLK the game was super freaking easy I was even PuGing 25 naxx and had my DK fully epic within a week of hitting 80. And I'm the type of player who's generally a loner and never was in a raiding guild. So yea, the game was wayyyy too easy and I lost all interest. The only thing that satisfied me was blacksmithing and making an ass load of gold but that even lost appeal when I had bought pretty much everything you can buy. My gold counter went beyond it's max and into the negatives lol. That happened around 230k gold acquired.

I don't play it due to the subscription fee. But I do play Guild Wars.

In the weeks before I quit I was endlessly grinding the daily heroic and daily quests at the argent toournament and occasionally go into ToGC to own Anub and get leet gear. But it just got too boring; ICC didn't come fast enough for me. I'm not going to lie, I think I did every heroic dungeon about 50 times except for the Occulus(worst dungeon ever!).

Started playing summer 06', still playing it. Bloody love it. Currently I've got 2 characters (a lvl 80 warrior and a lvl 70 druid), but I've had many more. It's just that sometimes I feel like starting over.

Yeah.

I had a very weird experience with WoW, let's just say that.

Started in the early stages of TBC and got a druid to level 10, it was such an achievment for me, i was so proud.
coupla months after that, made a new account (previous account shared)
and started a blood elf hunter (male) i know.
it took me months to get him to level 30 but when i did my account was hacked and i had no intentions of getting it back, it was quite fun to play though.

a year later, very very very early WOTLK a week after it came out, re bought wow and made a paladin, had a blast, only this time i was addicted so addicted ( and what was my motivation you might ask?) well i NEEDED A DEATH KNIGHT! and also i was having a fantastic social experience, i had an amazing guild and great ''friends'' got my paladin to level 55 and got my death night, playing a DK was like being god xD
so then i transfered to my mate's server and got a DK to level 76 at about level 68 WOW became a chore, and i was much more relaxed about it, new patch was released and my account was hacked. blizz wouldnt give it back
so now im here
roleplaying on private servers and playing guild wars xD

I have it as my "theres nothing out for a while so i'll play this" game. I enjoy it but I'm not playing right now as there are other games I want to play. Looking forward to Cataclysm as it's going back to the core game as well as new places. Hope it works out.

Welcome to the Escapist.

I've played since '05 after giving in to my pestering (now ex)girlfriend's begging.
Have several 80s, and a TON of retired 60s from my old pvp servers (Cho'Gall, Wildhammer, Darrowmere). However, since I work nights, I can't raid, so I'm not leet. D:

Most of my toons are druids/healers and have name-associations with sleeping. =B

I played for about a year and a half, I was pretty sold on it and I loved it. Even though I don't play it anymore it's still a great game. But what made me leave was the huge gap at between level 45 and 50 where every quest is either grindy, boring or impossible. And seeing as nothing new seemed to happen, I decided that it was time to leave, as content was running out. I am holding some hope for Cataclysm though. I wanna be a Worgen!

I don't see people's problems with paying monthly for a game.

You pay 8-10 pounds a week for WoW, and then you've got all the video game entertainment you need.

If play other games you pay anywhere from 10 to 50 pounds, depending on how old the game is, and you'll probably need a new game atleast every two months, perhaps every month, unless you only buy games that are very replayable or have a good multiplayer.

So, compared to playing WoW, you might actually pay more than TWICE as much for the same entertainment, although I guess you get more different entertainment if you don't play WoW.

I'd just like to add that I played WoW for about three years, but quit because it got boring. xD

I'm considering reactivating my account and booting up Rabbit, my level 80 Undead Warlock once more.

I name all my characters after animals.

I didn't vote as there was no option that truly fit my criteria. I don't play it but feel it has too much of a negative stigma attached to it.

I've been playing and raiding since launch and I've seen pretty much everything there is to see in the game. I don't think I will be participating in Cataclysm when it comes out. I'm not a fan of their recent design choices for endgame.

You can look up my shaman on the Detheroc server.

I played for a couple of years but quit just a couple of months ago, had a lvl 80 Pally which was my main and a lvl 80 DK as my alt and was in the process of leveling a hunter to 80, i was in a raiding guild on The Sha'tar server, we did all WotLK content and then the guild sadly split up just a few weeks before Icecrown citadel was launched, i was pretty down about it as id been with them for ages and i made loads of great friends but when we split some went to differant guilds, some faction changed to alliance and some realm transferred, so i just decided to stop playing it as i hate guild hunting and didnt think id feel as at home in any other guild i joined, i am still considering going back when Cataclysm is out but i doubt i will.

I played it up until around August of last year. I had a level 80 rogue ad a level 30 something priest. I got to the point where I needed to do things in groups to enjoy it. But unfortunately I am one of those online "Goth" gamers- A term that Yahtzee recently coined in his latest article. So I just sort of gave up trying to be in a guild doing raids and WoW faded into obscurity. Bit of a rip off anyway.

There's no option for someone who hasn't played it, doesn't want to know about it, and doesn't want to play it

I like having at least a semblance of a social life
Actually most other WoW players I know have a pretty normal social life. Although this game can be very time consuming, it doesn't have to be. At least, not any moreso than any other game out there.

I played WoW since its release all the way until Ulduar, as part of one of the top 20 guilds in the world. In the end the game became actually too time consuming with the introduction of all the achievements and hard modes in raiding, which were a must for my guild, and I got tired.
