I was ready to buy this but these $10 schemes really turn me off. And I don't even buy used anymore.
Back when I was poor I had to and that's really why I can't support that kind of scheme.
It's just sad to see that this practice is becoming so commonplace that it isn't even discussed anymore. I didn't hear anything about this until a consumer mentioned it in a forum post. So I didn't actually believe it at first but it turns out to be true.

And I know the argument that if everyone buys used games (which is just impossible) then the company wont make any money and they can't make bigger and better games in the future.
I don't really buy that, that money goes into the pockets of board members and the execs that think up crap like this. They don't go into making bigger better games or to the people who work the long hours in bringing these games to us.
It's just like the excuse that billionaires need their huge tax cuts so they can make more jobs. If that's the case, where are all the jobs?

So, are any of you turned off by schemes like this or are you accepting of any and all measures the publisher can come up with to get people to buy new; or as it appears to me - to punish poor people for not being able to afford to buy new?

I don't like it one bit.
In fact I think it's unreasonable for an industry that is thriving.

It won't discourage me from buying titles I really want.
But if I'm not so sure about a game, it will likely tip the scale in favor of not buying said game.

I buy new so doesn't affect me at all. Plus i think the online pass in Space Marine is quite good, you still get to experience multiplayer, just can't customise past a certain point.

Not everybody has money to buy new games, I'm not dropping 120$ a year, and what if someone wants to play the game 10 years from now? They find it in a bargain bin they go home, and then a message pops up saying that you didn't pay enough

i see no problem, it's the developer recouping losses. it's what you have to except because of the bigger budgets for games these days.

I'm not a big fan of the $10 pass business.

However, since I play on PC, I can't buy used anyway. So yeah... it's not an issue for me personally.

It's not the passes themselves that agitate me but rather the needless promo code entering and and website hunting required just to play a game. Admittedly this has only really affected me once or twice but it just seems awfully arbitrary. Why can't I just buy the game then play it? Why do I have to go to a few different websites and enter all these codes?

And no I don't want to sign up for your service just to play.

I always buy new, so it's never been an issue for me. I understand why game companies would want to put a nail into Gamestop's $5-off used sales, though.

No, the money doesn't go directly to the programmers/developers and so on. They get mostly salary and commission. It's the head writers and directors that get a share but the Producers and the A&R get the lion's share. It's not saying that if I buy this second hand then the board won't get this money, it's the fact that if a game flops so much, people that need this to earn a living (the programmers/developers) get fired.

It doesn't bother me too much.
I mostly buy games new, and if I buy used, I tend to buy them so cheap that project $10 doesn't bother me.

I am however, actively avoiding RAGE!
id thinking they can hold out on single player content is absolutely disgusting in my opinion and I will buy it once it goes cheap enough for me to know that id are making very little out of me.

id's single player pass sets a dangerous precedent and if it is successful, we will be getting closer and closer to buying a paid demo if we buy used, wit you getting 2 hours in and getting a pop-up saying "Activate or buy your online pass to carry on with the game"

Fuck that

Let's be fair here. The online pass is 800 points on xbox, a little less than most, plus it allows you to play online, you just can't progress past level 5.

In summary, it's a hell of a lot more reasonable than most schemes of this type.

That I do have a problem with. Is that how it works? It's not just something you type into the xbox, and it unlocks? That is kinda crappy, but not the worst thing ever.

It is however, completely pointless.

What is it today..? Oh yeah, Tuesday. I forgot because my PC collectors edition hasn't arrived yet. Anyway, as you may have guess, I buy most games on PC, so no bother to me.

My thoughts exactly.

Most games I buy, I buy new on launch day, so I get those bonuses with the game itself. Codes piss me off a bit, since my console is generally not connected to the internet. I have to plug the Ethernet cable every time, and while the PS3 downloads shit, I can't go on the Internet on my computer. And then there was L.A. Noire, which launched in the middle of the PSN crisis, and I had to wait about 2 weeks before getting the bonus cases. Ugh.

I probably have an opposite opinion but multiplayer or multiplayer content is fine for 10$ passes, but single player content shouldn't be cut off like that

Whatever, just wash your hands.
it annoys me but not enough to buy a game, mostly because if I plan on playing a game multi then Im going to get it on the pc and in that case it didnt have the ten dollar thing since there is no pc used market, if I buy a game on the 360 then I dont plan on multi since I refuse to pay more then a dollar or 2 for the gold account needed for multiplayer

Yeah... You know why the money that sales make goes into the pokets of the investors? Because they invested in this projekt. They paid the development costs and all the other things etc. So why it is so bad that they get their share from sales? What is so bad about those suitheads anyway? Those guys are the source behind all those fancy shmancy AAA titles you all love, even behind those smaller titles.

I don't give two fingers about the used market. Gaming is not expensive this days if you are smart enough to stay several months behind the cycle and only buy those games on release that really deserve it. Add to this the indie scene and tadaa. Used sales are a way for retailers to rip off both the gaming industry and the gamers (gamestop *cough*).
Yea. I know how investments work. I?ve invested directly into several businesses. And never have I ever had to insist that a product is sandbagged or a service hamstringed so I can get a bigger payout/higher dividends/bonuses.
If you think something is going to make money, you make the investment. If you?re wrong, you lose your money. That?s why they call it risk. Once again, that?s really not an excuse. Trust me, those board members and other investors were making plenty of money off their investments before these schemes...sometimes at the expense of the developers who actually do all the hard work. I know investors/I am an investor, so you?re going to have to do better than that to get me to feel sorry for them when they lose the bet.
I will agree that gameslop does way more to aggravate the situation than the gamers with little money (and trust me, I used to be poor and when you?re making minimum wage, $60 is a hell of a lot of money), I think that it makes the publisher look like a bunch of even bigger pricks for making things harder for legitimate consumers (they aren?t doing anything illegal and take it from me, when they do start making money, they will buy new, provided it isn?t a ripoff ? people who used to be poor tend to be more savvy consumers) rather than working something out with the retail chain that?s really causing the problem.
