Oh yeah. I'm in the process of writing a story (not really a short story) for fun, and it...eh..."borrows" pretty heavily from Half Life. It includes gas-mask wearing intimidation-cops, evil flying robots that give out medical attention in very uncomfortable ways (anesthesia is not a tool they are familiar with, which is unfortunate, because they spend the majority of their time healing gun shot wounds handed out by the previously mentioned cops.) and a huge evil, (but somewhat less science-fiction-y) iconic building in the center of a city, and citizens who are forced to wear bar-coded jumpsuits and live in crappy, identical apartments. That's where the similarities end, though.

Back in year 2 I wrote my first (And ONLY) piece of fan-fiction for when we were asked to write a short story. I whipped up some complex epic involving the Croc games and how Croc had to stop the evil plan to resurrect the Baron Dante. I think only my friends knew that it wasn't an entirely original plot because at the time me and my mates were in love with those marvellous games.

Once, I wrote out the intro for the first Resident Evil game, even changed a few lines and scenes to make it sound better.

I have once, in 8th grade I think it was. Didn't rip the whole story, but took key moments from Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood (as we were supposed to write a WW2 story for a mix up in history and norwegian). Knitted the key moments nicely together with a somewhat believable story. None of our teachers actually bothered to check if it was from a game or anything so I aced that test easily.

A friend of mine stole some of the story from Saving Private Ryan, which resulted in him getting trouble for stealing others work, so I guess they did check the stories if they were stolen from movies.

I wrote a short story for my end of year 8 exam, based in the fallout universe. It was about a family living life in a vault.

I shamelessly ripped off Phantasy Star II (yes, I'm that old) for a story assignment in eighth grade. Got a D on it. I didn't learn how to write until adulthood.

Hah, was about to say no...but, I actually did, I took the orgin story of Gauldauth Half-Dead from one of the Heroes of Might & Magic games and re-jigged it a little for a short story we had to write for an exam. Hmm...seems a lot of people have done this.

Yup.

We were supposed to write a story that would be in the same universe as Greek mythology.

And considering that one of my most anticipated sequels ever just had come out... Yeah.

This. Especially when I was writing an obscure form of our normal language (which for some reason is seen as "equal" even though practically no-one ever uses it), so I figured I needed a good story, and thus mostly ripped off prince of persia: sands of time. I felt a bit dirty afterwards, but that didn't stop me doing the same thing with oblivion (or, rather, stealing the setting, races and guilds) on a later, unrelated test.

In year 11 I had to write a short horror story and ended up getting an A* by re-writing the story to Silent Hill 2 with a few tweaks. That helped me get the year 11 English Lit award, back of the net!

I've never been in a situation where it was even an option, but if I ever was, I highly doubt I would even consider it.

When I was 11 we had to write about a character we had made up and I pretty much just described the Gorons from Zelda: Ocarina Of Time.

You mean Barney? That's Barney.[/hopelessly nerdy]

Using game stories as inspiration is a great idea, wish I'd thought of it for my creative writing courses. Oh well, I enjoyed getting into the story that I ultimately wrote anyway.
No, not Barney. When you're in the residential buidling before you met Alyx and the metrocops raid it, a random unamed NPC holds the door against them while you run.

I personally have and very recently, I was assigned to do a 500-1000 word fairy tale for my English class. I was drawing a blank so I decided to rip off the most recent game I beat Final Fantasy XIII with a few references to other games as well.

Here my question fellow Escapists have you every ripped off a video game for a short story?
I did it a lot when I was younger.

Just out of interest, are you doing Year 11 HSC?
If Year 11 means 11th grade then you are correct.
