It had a very "Stargate Galactica" feel to it and is definitely darker in premise than the other two, I admit. I'm still on the fence with the whole thing but hopefully the characters will grow on me as the show proceeds.
You ninja'd my post to the word.

GET OUT OF MY HEAD CHARLES
Hehehe.

The rather ironic thing about Science Fiction is that it's a very tried and tested formula and there is only few places that you can originally explore without bringing out the invasion/exodus/lost in space/exploring space/galaxies at war scenarios. It's come to a point now that writers, intentionally or not, end up rehashing old ideas done by others before. That's not to say the genre is dried up but it's awe fully hard not to draw a line of comparison nowadays.

The whole "lost in space" equation has been done since...well since Lost in Space or before and developed along the way via Star Trek Voyage, BSG and now SG:U.

I'm looking forward to the new series, especially seeing as though Robert Carlyle is supposed to be an A-Morale scientist which is a type of character that i love to watch, im just dubious as to what they can add now as a race of antagonists, we've had the G'ould, the Wraith, i dont know what they're going to do now
I think it was said in an interview that they won't be exploring a new major race/antagonists for this series.

That said though..."Replicators" is all that I am saying.

Stargate is a great TV series, they possessed a strong storyline and plot until the 2 seasons of SG1 but there was a general trend near the end that the writing was bad. The movies were terrible and were just as 2 slightly lengthened episodes which you can hear the commercial break in the middle. There are great actors in both SG1 and Atlantis, but the presentation of Atlantis made me feel that is was sub-par to what I was used to (the first seasons of SG1 which raised the bar).
Getting to the point of all this is - will this series be equal to the task of keeping the SG franchise alive and well? - Yes I think so.
Will this series be of the same quality? - based on what I saw in the previews and Atlantis, no I do not this it will be as good, and this is what may disappoint the long term fans of the series.
If it indeed is aimed at younger audience, then it is genuine proof that this theme is dead and being milked for all it's worth.

I fail to see how it being aimed at a younger audience is a bad thing.
After watching the pilot it looks like it is going to be very good and still have the same brilliant writing and acting the previous two Series' have had.

I just saw it yesterday and totally agree with IshFish. There were just too many young cast members. It was quite a bit darker than the first two series, but it was the season premier so one can expect it to be darker than the coming episodes.
It was a relief to see a familiar face in the cast though, because Dr. Rush is played by Robert Carlyle. For those of you who don't recognize him, he was they guy who played the bad guy with the bullet in his head so he couldn't feel pain in one of the newer Bond films. He has done a lot of British theatre and TV series. He also played Hitler in Hitler: The Rise of Evil and a bunch of other movies.
Overall it was a fun something to watch on a Friday night and I recommend it.

Just wanted to point put that Robert Carlyle was in 28 weeks later as well.

Oh and yes, the darker setting was quite prominent with the pilot episode but it would have to be; quite a lot of shit was happening during those two hours. It may quieten down and the trademark Stargate one liners, quips and humor may crop up in the subsequent episodes or it may not.

One thing I did notice though, at least from the trailers was the term "these are the wrong people" or something along those lines, meaning that the crew of SG:U are definitely not in the same mold as SG1 or SGA. i.e- not the scientist that can work miracles in the last minute or a leader that somehow makes the right choices all the time. It's new in the sense that this is not a team that is prepared for what they encounter. The unexpectedness is refreshing, I'll give the show that.

Did anyone see the premier yesterday?. Thoughts, views, concerns?.
I hated it. It was boring, ultra-dramatic, with a confusing timeline. Add to that the new fad, "shaky, handheld camera" and, "someone got really imaginative with the lighting, but I can't tell what's going on" and, "this person couldn't act scared on a Manhattan subway at 3 AM" and you end up with the pilot episode.

I can only hope it improves. *tsk tsk*

Universe reminds me of the SG1 episode "200" where they replace the crew with a younger team
THANK-you. :) I'm glad I wasn't the only one that caught that.
the farscape parody was the best one in the episode, tho the furlings were kinda funny too

that's some race i'd like to see them find in this series, i think that would be really cool cause they've teased us with the furlings for so long

as for this show, it has some potential. i think it will be good but i'll wait to see how well it turns out, have to give it a few shows

How big a fan of Stargate am I? Does having all of them on DVD both SG1 and Atlantis answer that question?

The show was meh. It took what has been established in 15 seasons, ten years and over 300 episodes and decided to ignore that, I am not sure why they decided that some of the Stargate fundamentals need to be changed. All I can get from the first episode that I watched is, they want to create a soap based in the Stargate canon but not be forced to stick to the rules and canon actually established over the last decade. That explains why O'Neil, Carter and Jacksons parts in the show were more thumbs to the fans rather than making them feeling like integrated people who.. for all intensive purposes, had established the core tenants of the Stargate Canon.

I have seen the two first episodes... I liked the first one and the second was okey...
So I am carefully optimistic...

When I first heard of the premies for Star Gate Univers I emedeatly thought Star Gate Voyager, but after seeing some of the promos it looks like they're going for more of a Battle Star Galactica feel, so I have high hopes.
I thought of BSG when I saw a preview for Universe on EP Daily. I think it's going to be pretty epic.

It was okay but was abit draggy and would've been better if there wasnt so much jumping back and forth between past events and what was currently happening.

This as well, my only real compliant was the confusing nature behind the ninth chevron, why didn't they dial earth and who was attacking the base.

I wasn't thrilled by it. One thing that esp. turned me off was the whole 9 symbol address thing and the "solution" to making it work. There were two things wrong with that, as far as I understand it. 1) If the 9th symbol is indeed the point of origin, then the thing should've worked using the symbol of the planet they were on as the 9th symbol. As the destination coordinates are not going to change because you're point of origin does. 2) Disregarding point 1, using Earth as the point of origin shouldn't have worked because they weren't actually on Earth. ...that is unless I really don't understand how the damn stargate works.

Robert Carlisle? Yes, he's in it.

I've just finished downloading the pilot (UK here) but now it's 4:30am so uh.. I'll watch it tomorrow.
