Well I decided to see what type of prices I would get when I pass my test after my 17th birthday. I decided to put in a low power car worth bugger all. A Peugeot 106 1.6L 1996. So what price do I get? £4,392.28. W. T. F? I know I would be a "risk" being "17" and after just passing but come on. This is just a ridiculous price for a small car. My parents put their details in and got £300 and £421 respectively. Stupid insurance companies.../rant

So what about you guys? Do you think your car insurance company charges you too much?

(I'm fully aware I'm just 15.9ish years old and prices will likely change)

Wow, and I thought mine were bad when I was first insured. My first insurance company were the cheapest, covering my 2000 Renault Clio 1.2L for £1400. It went down after the first year to £874, but then shot up to almost £1600 when I had an accident in my second year. I changed insurance companies, and am now paying £820 for ten months, then the no-claims will affect my policy sooner and I'll get a cheaper price, assuming I won't have another accident.

Apparently, if you're male, it's almost double what you pay if you're female, when you're 17 years old. Makes me glad I'm close to 21. That, and anything above 1.4L cars are notorious for being highly-priced. Depends what "band" your car fits into, too.

I don't own a car preciesely because of these kinds of things.
I could easily afford a to buy a car but I could not afford the insurance, upkeep and gas unless I tap into my reserves. Which I really don't want to.

keep in mind that you extortionate rates are because all of the groups you belong too are the most accident prone, teenage male etc.etc. also, are you on your parents plan sharing a vehicle, or are you on a separate plan with your own vehicle. I'm 16 sharing a vehicle and insurance plan with my parents, and my rates are less than $1000 canadian. (not sure the exact amount).

They charge so much because of the principle of what they're selling. I mean, lets face it, fear of damage to something so valuable is pretty much shared with everyone, so they can charge a lot for it and people will pay as long as it means their valuables are safe. Not to say that it's right, because it certainly isn't.

Yeah a 1.6 106 is either a Rallye, an XSi or a GTi. All sports models so yeah you'll get raped for insurance. Give up any idea of having anything decent for your first year unless you're a girl or get illegal insurance.

My first year on a 1.4 93 reg Clio RT (electrics but not in the slightest sporty) cost £2100 on a car worth a grand, my second year cost £1200 for a 205 GTI 1.9 (group 14 insurance). Stick it out.

Just to make you sick, I am now 25 and pay £360 a year on my modified 205 GTI. But having said that I still can't get decent quotes on Nissan Pulsars, Lancia Deltas or the like even with 5 years NCB, whereas my girlfriend could have had one for her first car with no NCB for £1200.

My insurance has fallen dramatically over the past few years, but it's still too high.

I'm 30 and have 7 years no-claims and drive a 1998 Punto Sporting 1.2 16v.......and fully comp is still £220!!

On the flip side, I ride a 1992 Suzuki GSX-R1100M. I had no no-claims and hadn't ridden for 6 years, yet I got insured for £207..........for a vehicle that'll do a standing quarter in 10.5 and eventually tops out at almost 170mph!

The whole structure to insurance doesn't seem to make any sense.

Yes they do over charge. Unfortunately we are paying for our own sins.

As a male under 25 you are more likely to write off a car by your 25th birthday than not, the odds of you not killing anybody or yourself in that time aren't great either. Insurance companies don't like that, they work entirely on odds and our odds are not good.

It's not all bad, get a couple of years without claiming and the price drops like a stone.
Mine has gone from £800 to £500 to £350 since I started driving, no crashes or claims so far. Still three 1/2 years till I'm 25 though...

Yeah it was a GTi. Saw one for sale for 500 quid in perfect condition.

I feel your pain dude. There seems to be no insurance company willing to offer young male drivers anywhere near affordable prices. Its times like this I wish I was female...

My 1.3 Petrol Ford Fiesta costs around £1700-£1800 for the first year insurance. Where the fuck do they think 17 year olds will find that kind of money?!

I've gotta say though, the huge quote you got is probably due to the fact that your car is 1.6. Thats pretty big for a first car (unless its diesel ofc.)

Seems the only way to get round it is to do what some of my mates have done. They're lucky to live on a farm/ have parents who own workshops/garages, and therefore the parents have ridiculously cheap and liberal insurance policies, which seem to be happy to allow 17 year olds to be insured on Land Rover Defenders, Mitsubishi puckup trucks etc. :(

The reason is that when you crash a bike you are unlikely to kill anyone but yourself.

In the Punto you have the possibility of killing five people even without hitting pedestrians/other cars, the logic's really quite sound when you think about it.

I'd hate to see an insurance quote for a 17-year-old driving a Bugatti Veyron.
Well I couldn't find anyone who would insure a Veyron, so I tried something else.

Name - Bob Bobson
D.O.B - 7-1-92
Address - A random postcode in Milton Keynes (Googled!)
No claims - N/A

Car to insure - Ferrari 360 Spider
Excess - £300

Fully Comp Quote (ERS Insurance) - £9999.00

That isn't actually as bad as I thought......I'm sure I could take a bit more off by upping the excess to £1500!

It just seems a bit wierd that a 170mph missile worth four of my cars is cheaper to insure. Maybe bikes are the way forward, I seem to remember years ago it being a complete nightmare to insure them.

Ok I did the same details on the same car except made it so that it was a female 17 year old. It went from £4,392.28 as a guy to £1,601 as a female. Same car, Peugeot 106 1.6L 1996. I should form a complaints group about sexual discrimination on car insurance...

Now you know as well as me and everyone else that sexism is a one-way door.

The most put upon members of society are white, working class males.........we have absolutely no pressure groups fighting on our behalf!
