Ok I did the same details on the same car except made it so that it was a female 17 year old. It went from £4,392.28 as a guy to £1,601 as a female. Same car, Peugeot 106 1.6L 1996. I should form a complaints group about sexual discrimination on car insurance...
Now you know as well as me and everyone else that sexism is a one-way door.

The most put upon members of society are white, working class males.........we have absolutely no pressure groups fighting on our behalf!
Amen to that.

I mean...where are we, just out of school going to uni/college, going to get several thousand pounds? I'm just going to go on my parents insurance when the time comes...

It just seems a bit wierd that a 170mph missile worth four of my cars is cheaper to insure. Maybe bikes are the way forward, I seem to remember years ago it being a complete nightmare to insure them.
Pff, try insuring Bicycles, now that's odd.

I have two good mountain bikes, both worth (a lot) more than my car. I ride them 'enthusiastically'. Insuring both against theft and damage, including damage while riding, is about £300 a year.
Last year (and the year before that) I got through more than £300 worth of parts. In fact last year after I added up all the chains, wheels, tyres and other parts that I'd broken it came to nearly three times that amount. Of that amount most was claimed on insurance and...

... my premium has stayed the same. My mind boggles on the economics, it must be a tax dodge on the insurers part or something.

I still think it's unfair and sexist that I have to pay more for my car insurance because I just so happened to be born with a penis. That is all.

It's alarming to see how much they do charge for various cars for 17-year-old drivers, though; usually more than the car is worth. I'd hate to see an insurance quote for a 17-year-old driving a Bugatti Veyron. On the other hand, I was eighteen when I got my car, a 1997 Volkswagen Golf Mk3 with a 1.4L engine, and while it cost a lot, it wasn't more than the car was worth.
With the Veyron they don't insure you for the year, they insure you according to how many miles you've clocked on the engine, so 10 miles is 100 smackers.

Well I couldn't find anyone who would insure a Veyron, so I tried something else.

Name - Bob Bobson
D.O.B - 7-1-92
Address - A random postcode in Milton Keynes (Googled!)
No claims - N/A

Car to insure - Ferrari 360 Spider
Excess - £300

Fully Comp Quote (ERS Insurance) - £9999.00

That isn't actually as bad as I thought......I'm sure I could take a bit more off by upping the excess to £1500!

Please tell me where you got that insured!! :D

Also to the OP, where you live can affect your price too. My mate lives in Dorrige (Posh boys area, VERY posh, houses of £350k + ) and I live in Yardley Wood (Total shithole. Mostly full of council houses, but some bought in the region of £120k) and to insure a 1.1 fiat cinqucento sporting it cost him £1150 to insure full comp, and cost me £1900, same car, same company. It's really dependent on where you live, gender and age.

But to answer the original question? Totally extortionate.

Insurers write that amount off, kind of offsetting it against the financial rape of all their other customers.

It's generally not about the individual customer (unless something is a write-off in one hit), it's more about balancing all customers for maximum profit. That's one of the reasons they financially rape most of their customers, to create a healthy buffer for examples like yours and still make money.

EDIT: They probably don't feel they could raise your insurance any more before you go to one of their rivals.

Well I live in one the quietest streets in Arbroath, which is 60% council houses. I'm not in a council house mind (thank god, I would be surrounded by chavs if I was) and it is a neighbourhood watch area if that matters...

I have one thing to say...

PLEASE do not get Farmers Insurance.. or State Farm..

Anyone that has ever hit ME.. and it was their fault. .ended up having this insurance.. and every time they tried to sue me, even when the cops had traffic reports against what they were claiming. And every time I eventually won, after spending thousands and waiting through 6 months of court B.S. .... If you have them and they are good to you... well great for you.. but just know who ever you hit is screwed... not that anyone ever cares about that sort of thing..

Not sure how reputable they are, but a quote's a quote! I got a good quote for a 2009 Murcielago LP640 with the same (fake) driver.........£5000 with a £1 excess. I think I may have broken their system!!

That's the thing, they don't look into people in your area. Just the houses there. It's ridiculous, having more money means you get cheaper insurance and living in a less well off area means more expensive insurance. How the fuck do they work it out!?

Don't have any since I don't own a car and just got my learners permit a few weeks ago, but it will probably be sky high since I'm a teenage male.

Insurance is a giant scam and a travesty. My parents technically own my car so I get a huge break on it, it would more than quadruple if I were the primary driver.

I've been driving since I was 15, and I'm 22, I've never had an accident, not even a minor one. Never been pulled over by a cop. In fact, I've never had a run in with police, ever. And yet I'd still have to sell a kidney or two to get insured for a year on a Mazda 626, hardly a beast of a car.

this is why I'm buying a motorcycle. Insurance companies can die in a fire.

Problem is, you have to get insurance. It's the law. Insurance companies know this so they can charge higher prices.

My car is in the Netherlands, but I go to university in the UK so I hardly ever use it yet I still have to pay more than the value of the car in insurance. If it wasn't the law I wouldn't get insurance. Thanks Mr. Government.

Yeah I've been able to drive since my dad showed me what to do and let my go around the cul-de-sac back when I was 13. Found it quite easy but reverse parking was a nightmare. I'm not allowed to get a provisional and "start" learning until I'm 17 so that's a year and a month away. By then my dad will probably have enough no claims to make it reasonable if I go on his insurance. Which I will...

Considering it's the law that you need Car Insurance it should definitely be cheaper than it is, for everyone.

If they wanna have a requisite for driving a car it damn sure better be accessible to everyone.

Geez kinda sureal to hear 1.6L a "big" car. I think my lawnmower is almost that big. I drive a "little" 3.0L V6.

I never really understood why women get charged so much less. If i'm not mistaken the have achieved the same accident rates as males. Though I shouldn't complain I pay 35 bucks a month.

Yeah, it's kinda weird hearing about engine size across the pond. My weedwhacker is probably bigger than 1.0L.

That being said, the SUVs and other giant unnecessary crap-haulers over here in the States need to go the way of the dodo. I want a Mini.

Mine is decent but still far too high. Of course, I'm 17 and I drive a Jeep Grand Cherokee :D
