Bottom line, Geek and Nerdy is currently a fad, it'll pass.
I find it funny and I'm a pretty huge nerd. I mean, I make videogames... I dunno how much nerdier you can get. The canned laughter is annoying, and it can be predictable, but that's what you get with Chuck Lorre.

On topic: Geek and nerd are just labels used to distinguish between people quickly and easily, based off of what activities they enjoy. How one is judged a geek or a nerd is largely different person-to-person, so it's not at all a concrete term. Some guys feel that nerdom is a boy-only club (and somewhat ironically are very homophobic), so they shun women who try to partake. Whether that's calling them a noob, poser, wannabe, attention whore, etc. Of course some women are attention whores who just do it to feel like a nerd goddess, but they are a small minority.

Captcha: "van surfing" sounds fun, count me in!

Well I have had to quiz this one girl because she claimed to know about Eragon. No I did no quiz her because she was a girl, I quizzed her because she was a POPULAR gril. She failed. I asked,"What is a Shade?" She retorted with "What is a Dragon(I think she was trying to not answer the question)" I replied,"A Magical Cret..." She stopped me and said,"Dragons aren't magical" she failed right there. Fuckin fake nerds man.

See! Now that's how you do it.

The other approach which I'm less fond of seems to be "I like generalisations and am not an idiot... TAKE THAT, YOUR ARGUMENT! Next time why don't you just not say what your opinion is?"

[sub]I like the Big Bang Theory...[/sub]

OT: Dunno 'bout anyone else, but announcing that you're a geek/nerd is a fucking annoying trait to have, regardless of gender.
[sub]It's okay Daystar I like it too <3[/sub]

OT: I always say "I'm not much of a gamer" when people ask (I'm a girl, btw), but I mentioned once I had 22 games installed on my computer (nevermind the xbox games) and my friends were like "... then you're totally a gamer" and I was like "oh."

And then we moved on.

I honestly doubt anyone ever said that to you. An "otaku" is someone who has an obsession in which they don't leave their house aside from necessities i.e. buy food, work, etc. They are essentially shut ins. So I doubt yo ever truly met one.

OT: Call yourself whatever you want. Don't like what someone else calls them self? Get a fucking life.
Disclaimer: This comment is meant in jest. Since some people did not seem able to grasp this, I've added a winky face at the end to make it more obvious for them.

I greatly dislike it when people claim in earnest they are medical doctors when they are, in fact, no such thing. I happen to have a life, and still dislike this. Your statement is invalid. ;D

In the near future, the term "geek" will be worthless, since everything that defines geek literature (sci-fi, fantasy, cyberpunk et al) will either have become full mainstream or die down.

Just let the girls in, guys. It's high time.

Um, what, is there a PhD in Geek, just like in Medicine? Huh?

It really bothers you if someone calls themselves a geek, and they don't meet some made up criteria you have in your head?

Please explain.
My comment was directed at "call yourself whatever you want". Thus the medical doctor example.

No problem with people who are "not geeky" enough ala casuals.

What IS annoying however, are people who have NOTHING to do with this subculture (never read comic books, watched sci-fi or played a fucking game in the past 5 years) suddenly putting on some ironic glasses and basically just going for the "look".

I think that's what people (nerds in particular) have a problem with. They can see their precious hobbies becoming casual and mainstream, even being adopted by their past tormentors, and bleach blond bimbos who just do it for attention (in their eyes) epitomize the bastardization of "nerd" culture. Thus the lashing out. I personally don't care either way. Also, yes, You can call me Doctor Nerd.

whoa!

<spoiler=I think this is going a bit too far>http://static03.mediaite.com/themarysue/uploads/gallery/geek-girl-meme/geekgirl5.jpg

Anyway, I have nothing against girls going into the "nerd" culture. I have nothing against anyone going into any culture. What I dont like is when the girl/person wants some kinda special attnetion for it, or before she gets into it and actually researches the topic, proceeds to open her/their mouth and say that its not pro women/whatever and that something you hold dear as a classic moment is wrong because its not to their liking and if you tell them no they're immediately the victim and you should be ashamed for disagreeing and feel like some sorta villain out to oppress rights.

... now i do think girls get a rather rough break in the "nerd" culture because of the idea that some "purists" still hold that they're women and dont get it and they're just trying to ruin an idea that you shouldnt hold up in a modern day and age. But every abnormal demographic who enters a predominantly established community has to face that, because its just part of getting new ideas. I think that today the idea that a girl gamer/nerd being treated in a way that the memes seem to suggest just isnt really true unless the girl brings it on themselves by playing that role.

...

Right.

Nice taklin to ya. Not sure what you're on about, but good luck with it! Next time I want to claim something in earnest, I'll think of you.

xxoo
If that rather explicit explanation still didn't get through to you....I'm sorry. I'd just suggest you don't go calling yourself anything you want or advise others to do it, it could create problems. I imagine you'll understand someday.
