Why Heloooooo children!
you know what I see when I set my watchfull eyes to the sea that is this forum?
I see alot of fallout topics this evening. And since were all in the mood, I thought
I'd go to the cellar and bring up some of that fine ol' disccussion wine.

on topic wastelanders:
Is fallout 3 truly in the spirit of the old fallout games,
Do you get the same feeling of wasteland and you. or don't?
Personally I prefer fallout 3 over the old ones, good as they are.

Tell us now, why is it better? why is it not?
convince us why you are right, and why everyone should praise your shit,
like it was some divine relic from long gone gods. amuse me.

I was dissapointed that wasnt a poem, it was set out like one...

Not really, the original Fallouts spent most of their time working on a dark cohesive setting and focused primarily on dialogue and freedom of approach, they also were designed to closely emulate PNP RPGs.

Fallout 3 does none of these.

Dude, I thought the same thing.

And Fallout 3 has a Fallout feel in most things, like story and atmosphere, (and other than the actual gameplay obviously).

I tried to get into the first 2 Fallouts (got the Fallout Trilogy Pack), but the damn thing didn't come with a manual or a readme that had anything like that, and the control seemed terrible from what I could tell =/...so for me atm, Fallout 3 is the superior

The atmosphere and the setting is the same, but everything else is different. That's not nessassarily a bad thing though.

I just got a Fallout trilogy pack and my god is it hard to get into. The learning curve is so steep and it's so hard to find anything to do. There are moments of brilliance, like the intro or when I met Harold for the first time, but I still feel like I'm battling against the gameplay to get to the good bits.

So for me, Fallout 3 is a better game, even if the story for Fallout 1 (and maybe 2, I can't get it to load) is far seperior. The problem is that isn't really a fare comparison. Fallout 3 has time on it's side, Fallout is old. For the most part Games are getting better all the time, no matter what the old timers may say. Ofcoarse for the old timers Fallout has nostalgia on it's side, so it's a two way street.

Fallout 3 just didn't feel right, to me.

It's like everything in that world was trying to be "Fallout", not like it was a Fallout game.

Fallout 1-2 were all about playing a character and living with the choices you made as that character, Fallout 3 seems to just be grinding numbers and people.

Seeing as Fallout 3 doesn't constantly attempt to kill you every half-second and skullfuck the remains I'd say it's lost some of the spirit of the original Fallout. And the combat/gameplay is way different, although I find the original Fallouts to have fun combat and wandering the wastes for random encounters is still entertaining. They also allowed for more roleplay/consequences. Almost a P&P RPG but limited by the fact that the GM is already programmed.

The humor and general attitude is the same though.

Fallout 3 faltered completely for me. I didn't care one bit about the characters and the environment felt artificial and fractured. None of the wow-factor of the previous games and a bland pastiche of the previous games in terms of both humour and geeky references. The main plot was lacklustre and had little of the surreal twist of the previous games.

Maybe it's a good FPSRPG, I really can't tell; everybody just keeps staring at me. Freaks me out that.

As soon as I saw the thread title, I thought of this [http://cdn.themis-media.com/media/global/images/articles/article/5507/sp041.jpg] (mainly the last panel). It's surprising how similar they are.

(Just so everyone knows, the link is a Stolen Pixels comic.)

It isn't anything like the other fallouts (lore, story, gameplay), but it is still fucking awesome!!!! And the setting is sort of similar.

Just a coincidence *whistle*
no, I read trough the stolen piexels the other day and that one got me thinking, I tried to play the old fallout 1,2 and tactics and of course fallout 3 again, I came to the conclusion I prefered the later and started to wonder about what the res of the escapist may think.

Fallout 3 did the francise both justice and honor.

it truly brought the retro-futuristic post-apocolyptic feel the Fallout francise has always been known for and brought it to the 3-D world.

Fallout 3 is, essentially, the peak of the entire Fallout francise.

I liked Fallout 3.... but the whole reason I LOVED fallout one and two was because of the characters and dialogue. Bethesda seems to fall short on that from the three games by them I played. I mean the only "unique" character I ever met was Fawkes and Three Dog, every other NPC I met seemed to be the same as every body else. You could "possibly" say that Moira Brown was unique voice-wise, but if you listen to the only holotape in the game supposedly from your mother, they have the same voice. I did like the game, but it lost all of the pulp comic references and humor that I loved. From the reinactment of the Man With No Name trilogy in New Reno from two, and the Jive Talking Seth from one. It just had nothing that stuck with me. I ended up playing the game just to find all the best loot instead of continue the story....

So was it the same technically? Sort of because I thought the wasteland itself was right on for an FPS version, But as far as individuality and Spirit go, it just fell short. To be honest, I almost wish 2k had made this game. I enjoyed Bioshock more than Fallout 3... and I have beaten all the old fallouts probably ten times each with different characters.

PS:
That's another thing. I miss traits! Like honestly, Bloody Mess wasn't an increase in damage! It was just a trait that let you see the worst and most of the time "most interesting" way an enemy could die.....

The only thing that Fallout 3 and the its predecossors are alike is the world.

Gameplay - Better
Story & Dialogue - Worse

You don't get a good story by taking the large part of the story from Fallout 1 & 2, throw it down a blender, mix for 25 minutes and hope no one will see the similarities.

Don't take this as a rant, I love Fallout 3. Not as a Fallout game, but as a game in whole.
