My God. It took the spirit of Fallout, crushed it into Oblivion, pun intended, and tried to sell it as a "true" Fallout.
As I have said before, Bethesda couldn't understand the spirit of Fallout if they were strangled with it.

As a game, its quite nice.

however as a Fallout game it is very lackluster.
it dont have the dark humor, alltho it tries and fall on its face a few times
it dont got a story thats remotely as intressting
the radio sucks arse
the lv system still needs work (and stop with the fucking lv scaling!! it was not a good idea before and it still aint)

but if you though of it as a game called "the wasteland" then it would have been really good. as a fallout game? it falls short

Many who have played Fallout 3 first find the original trilogy to be horrid. I played the original trilogy first and prefer them a lot more. In the end, Fallout 3 boiled down to spamming stimkits, and that's all you needed to win in it. Also, what was with the last boss? Fallout 2 had an awesome fight with Frank, while in Fallout 3 you can just one shot the enemies. I also preferred the originals gameplay, because it was unique and fun for me, unlike generic shoot-em-up crap that made VATS somewhat stupid in F3.

I enjoy it because it's different, and I feel the first person shooter part made it much better than it was before as a top down strategy game.

Well looking back at fallout 1 and 2 and considering most other popular pc games of that era we can assume that the first two fallout titles were practically made for the early '90s...when the word gamer did not exist and those who played most video games also played tabletop games and went to the video arcade.

If they had done fallout 3 in the style of the first two it wouldn't have clicked with modern day audiences who have become less attached to point and click grid/turn based micro-management motherfuckery and more acclimatised to a smoothh, continuous experience of games. From that it would've only clicked with our modern day straight faced accountants who could pick it up, load it on and for a few glorious weeks go back to their afforementioned earlier days and due to this the game would not have been the explosive, instant classic sci-fi epic of a completely satisfying apocalyptic rpg we know and love today. So yes while fallout 3 has stuck true to the universe of fallout 3 and made truly grand testament to the first two it has not portrayed the gameplay mechanics or feel of gameplay that was evident in its predeccessors. Now that, is my stance.

Fallout 3 showed the vastness of the wasteland best, it really gave the feeling of you're alone in a shitty environment and you have to be on your toes out of the towns. What it lacked was the cons of using the items in the first ones. I thought it was spectacular but it did have some flaws.

I don't think that it is quite in the same area as the other Fallouts. The other Fallouts were more about talking to people and advancing the storyline, whereas the new Fallout is more about sandboxing it up and combat. Doesn't mean that Fallout 3 is not a bad game though.

It all depends upon how one is defining the spirit of fallout. The story of Fallout 3 follows an arc similar to the ones seen in other games, complete with the part where you inevitably fall upon the sword for the greater good (unless of course you actually play the DLC). The environment is well realized in general and seems to communicate a sense of desolate isolation common in the previous games. There was obviously a staggering change in basic gameplay and core mechanics, which is what I suspect causes most people who enjoyed the previous entrants in the series to complain. Rather than being an RPG in the truest sense, what you essentially get is a shooter with variable auto-aim and conversation trees. The options for problem solving at a player's disposal are limited at best as well, given your choice generaly revolves around which weapon you will apply to your problem of the moment. In past games, one could solve almost any problem without resorting to violence, and while I found this to be the most tedious way to play the game I did appreciate having the option.

In general, it is a game in the spirit of the predecessors but it does not slavisly follow in the tired footsteps of it's ancestors.
