I only had to start again once, when the door to Galaxy News Radio remained locked(and could only be opened with a key), even when I used the intercom. The Metro system was very confusing, but only because I was in such a hurry to do the questline that I missed out the vital point that I had to use the tunnels in the first place.

But the only thing I'd say you did wrong was the whole shooting people bit. Fallout 3 does tend to get less fun as you do everything, and the DLC such as the Pitt is a bit to short lived for my liking.

I can't understand how people get stuck in Fallout 3.

Everything is signposted clearly and every quest section is written in your pipboy, telling you what to do and where to go.

I hope these people never try Fallout 1 and 2, they wouldn't make it past the first 10 minutes.

I completely agree with you on the limited amounts of ammo, weapons and most things that move hating me. I was even more annoyed when after going through one of the subways, killing some mutants and talking to some people for about an hour, I was told to go BACK into a different story. Boredom killed this game for me. It's far too realistic (considering the circumstances) than my liking. If you enjoyed it? hey, knock yourself out.

The game is, in essence, as fun has you make it. If your all about killing everyone and everything, then you'll find that it will get old real fast. However, if your willing to put in some time, and effort.... who am I kidding, a lot of time and effort, you can actually make it play out like a movie of sorts. But that is also the key, you really have to work at the game to make it work for your. The game type says it all, RPG, Roll Playing Game. You have to make your character, and then play them. This isn't some mindless shooter like Battlefield 2.

That said, in terms of 'Are you doing something wrong?', if your not having fun, the only thing your doing wrong is not having fun. Follow your folly. If the game doesn't feel right to you, its neither your, nor the games, fault. The game just isn't your style.

Man I hated fallout3.
I just couldn't stand it.
Not because I hate the adventure aspect. No, no that is awesome as always.
But seriously, it's freakin bleak, depressing, and everything kills you. Even the environment. But not in a creative "Aww that plant just tried to eat me!" sorta way. More like "You now have cancer" sorta way. Oh, and the healthcare? Its freakin terrible. First time I played I got a concussion right off the bat and had no fuckin idea how to make it stop. It gave me a migraine.
Taking care of your partners is a pain in the ass. Dogmeat is the only one I can stand...mainly because he doesn't talk back and you can heal him whenever....
You can't kill the children, for some god fearing reason. But you can make them orphans. Much more ethical.
Walking across the wasteland seemed more like a chore than an adventure. All for short, easy, tedious missions that often leave me feeling like I missed something.
Talking to people sucks, because If I want to be anything other than a goody two shoes, they try to kill me. So now I have several towns full of dead people.
They give you radio, which would be a good thing..if the stations they gave you played good music, and you had them all right off the bat. Why did dogmeat have to die over a stupid violin, that turned out to be out of tune anyways?
I liked oblivion, where everything came together. Fallout seems too......shallow I guess. I just went on gamefaqs not too long ago to check if how many quests/missions I didn't do and where to find them. I had only done....maybe 20 or so, including main quests, and it turns out I did them all.
I really do enjoy walking through the capital wasteland and finding different groups(preferably one that doesn;t want you dead) fighting each other.
And not knowing if whats around the corner can kill you in one hit or not? IT's a good feeling.
But overall, I dislike it. Maybe if they just added more stuff to do in between cities, or maybe made it closer together...

I hated Fallout 3. I love fantasy RPGs, but this was grey, boring and depressing. It's also incredibly repetetive.

I don't get the "Don't shoot the people who sell you stuff" I started my most recent Fallout save by disarming the bomb to get the house and then murdering everyone in Megaton (Actually I did Colins stuff first) by the time I was done I had tonnes of cash, stimpacks and ammo. Evil is the easiest way to play.
-snip-
Ol' Painless is amazing, probably my favourite gun in the game other than Black Hawk for the fun factor. Well I haven't come across the "running out of ammo and stimpacks" problem as raiders and super mutants drop what I need, stuff is easily nicked from empty houses and I currently have about 250 odd stimpacks that I rarely use.
Your absolutely right about the cash though, I have no need for it whatsoever.

I really liked oblivion. I'm a huge rpg fan, but I too found fallout 3 depressingly boring.

It wasn't just the environment, everything just seemed boringly paced and badly set out. I struggled to find any points I actually liked.

I know it's not a bad game, it just didnt appeal to me in any way.

So no, you aren't doing something wrong, it just doesn't grab some people. I thought the hype was a bit overrated.

To copy and paste something I posted about F3 back in December, in a thread comparing it to Borderlands:

The combat in Fallout can be merciless, but its all about the first couple of characters. You can quickly learn what works and what doesn't. Melee for example is a big no-no, but your not going to get far using guns unless you have a nice Small Guns skill and Repair skill value. And get the Scrounger Perk and ammo problems become very few and far between. Apart from Mini-Nukes. Oh lord I wish I could get a stupidly large amount of Mini-Nukes without having to camp outside Flak and Shrapnel's for 3 game days. And the map system is fine o_O I found myself checking Borderland's map screen a lot more than I did on Fallout. [For actual guidance on where to go, not to figure out if I'm still heading in the right direction]

I've invested well over 300 hours into Fallout since it's release, so maybe my comments are biased. I also own Borderlands, I've completed it once and am on a 2nd Playthrough [merely for the level 50 achievement] I've also mucked about a few times online with a friend. Borderlands boss fights were so-so [I preferred the early bosses tbh] the landscape DID give me a very post-apocalyptica feel [even my father, who is a casual gamer, asked me if I was playing Fallout when I was actually on Borderlands] It's also quite a funny game, some of the characters have BRILLIANT accents and one-liners ["Lucky is my friend! And when I say friend, I mean asshole who busted up my momma's girly parts!" and I also occasionally find myself going "Come on everybody, Catch a riiiiiiide!"] and the little boss subtitles are worth a chuckle.

But I still find Fallout funnier. I dread to think how many creatures and humans I've seen slowly separate into several different pieces and fly off in other directions thanks to the wonder of V.A.T.S. I find the plot so much more gripping, there is a stupidly large amount of things to do even if you have finished the main plot. [Took my first character 95 hours to reach the point of 'Okay, done every quest and sub-quest and free-roam quest and achievement I can earn being an evil piece of work, time to roll a new one' 95 hours, baring in mind, after I'd already hit max level of 20 back when the game was still fresh, then went and did all the side quests, THEN the DLC was released with the increased level cap, so I dread to think how much lovely EXP I wasted]

I personally think Fallout3 looks a hell of a lot better, even if the world is the usual shades of grey and brown, but it LOOKS like an area that has been in complete decay since nuclear bombs fell 200 years previous. The main radio station in the game [that's right, radio, still alive and kicking in post-apocalyptica!] has some music that you really wouldn't think would work with the game, but strangely, is to this day one of the best soundtracks to a video game I've ever heard. Whereas Borderlands just has a kind of random background track. If Borderlands had at least given me the choice of listening to "No Rest for the Wicked" in game instead of just on the intro I'd have probably enjoyed it that slightly bit more.

Anyway this is turning into one long comparison.

I'd say go for Fallout if your looking for a truly post apocalyptic game with a single player campaign that should last you quite sometime [If you go looking for the extra quests and randomly like to explore new areas]

But if you are looking for multiplayer co-op chuckles, with a crazy large amount of guns [whom only slightly vary due to stats tbh], and enjoy getting zerg-rushed by large amounts of mobs [at least, they rush the fuck out of you in Single Player], get Borderlands.
And I honestly can't get my head around people saying its boring and unimmersive. Or people comparing it to Oblivion. Yes, its the same game engine, but you don't see people comparing Arkham Asylum to Unreal Tournament/Gears of War do you? Okay, its a First Person RPG, but come on o_o;;

The only other game to grab me by the balls as much as F3 did in the past few years was World of Warcraft, and the less said about that the better.

Well, i just wandered around the wastes after doing some stuff in Megaton. The amount of shit you can find is pretty awesome, and sometimes you find odd locations, like the Republic of Dave (which is literally run "democratly" (you can initiate an election and have Dave lose) by a guy named Dave and his 2 wives and his sons make up the army of the republic of Dave)

I regularely come back to Megaton, and i have done so much good that random people come to me and give me free stuff, which i was really suprised to find when it happened the first time.
Now i get back to Moira to sell her the junk i´ve found, and to sleep in my bed and fill my personal armory safe with unused guns (currently, a minigun with 300+ Bullets resides there waiting for my Big Guns skill to rise...I guess when i will finally use it, i´d have more then 2000 rounds.)
I also made a custom out of finding and repairing guns and selling them for alot of caps since I also am pretty good at maintaining stuff.
But, I´m your regular Smallguns player, straighforward "solve problems with voilence" guy, but I do not attack people who didn´t do me wrong or from which i don´t expect a high value.
I am currently battleing the idea of pickpocketing Simms key to the armory, to steal all the weapons in there...

After all, Fallout 3 is what you make out of it.
I generally like the idea of post apocalyptic life and stuff.
Also, I´ve really grown to love Dogmeat...he followed me through so much shit...it´s a good thing that, along with Broken Steel, he levels with you unnoticed and get´s enormous amouts of health.

It depends.

I haven't personally played Fallout 3 yet, but Oblivion shouldn't be that far from it in terms of experience. And I generally get bored of Bethesda' things pretty quick if I follow the main storyline.

So, uh, when I play Oblivion I end up kicking the crap out of arena with various custom classes, and doing all the fun missions with Dark Brotherhood and Thief Guild.

And, y'know, crawl around breaking into people's places to murder them o_O

Open the box and look inside.

There's a nice shiny booklet on the left.

It's called the 'Manual'.

You should acquaint yourself with it and then try the game again.

the thing about fallout as with oblivion is you have to get the mindset correct - its all well and good going YAY resouces let me plunder but what about that 10 mm ammo you got from the vault how long will that last - the second i left tha vault it was yeah im reall hardcore because i have a gun with 36 ammo left ill be fine - but unless you can afford new ammo or are a good enough shot your dead with just 36 bullets.

I find its also good to just wander the wastes for a while its a learning curve after a while you wont approach anything that moves without a wepon drawn or scoping them out first (if you can get a sniper rifle even if your not good with it, it helps plan the road ahead especially against some of the wastes nastier mutations)

Let me see if I understand.

You bought a gun, or some ammo, then aimed at Moira, and pulled the trigger-shaped button, and now you don't understand where you went wrong?
Maybe you should never hold a gun. Ever. That might be nice.

Seriously, Fallout 3 is a great game. It keeps up with you in terms of difficulty, adapting to your level (at least until you get out of Raven Rock, then the difficulty curve drops like Oblivion - the vertical drop ride at Alton Towers, that is, not the RPG from the same company), the characters are varied and interesting, the world is expansive and rich, full of things to discover and places to explore. Fallout 3 is the sort of game that really needs you to give it a chance, then it takes off. Until then, just try not to shoot the people that want to sell you things.

On a somewhat unrelated note, it often makes me sad that the landscape in Fallout is dead, so sometimes I just wander off to Oasis to pretend it's all nice and lush. I guess I could always play Oblivion and imagine some Deathclaws into it.

Bleak an' depressing, you say? That's probably because THE COUNTRY WAS NUKED FOR SEVEN HOURS.
