Hrmm.... Jeez thats a harder question than i though it would be. Now, the problem is, is that i have only played Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3 and New Vegas. But i cant think of a single reason that i would prefer one over the other...

Well, i guess that when New Vegas was announced, i was excited, but when Skyrim was announced i was counting down the weeks, days, and hours until i could play it... Sooooo ill say that TES is better.

EDIT:

Oh wow, im genuinely surprised that Fallout is winning the Poll. I would have never guessed.

This is a very hard choice, as I love both series to bits.

But ultimatly I'd prefer Fallout, if I had to choose.

Everyone shuns Fallout because of bugs, but having put a decent 80+ hours into Fallout 3 and New Vegas individually... I never had a bug, glitch, corrupt save etc. But my vote went to both, as I enjoy TES and Fallout for both of their unique settings
After 190ish hours of Fallout: NV and about 120 in Fallout 3 I've only ever experienced a few crashes to desktop.
I'm also a compulsive quicksaver, so it never really affected me much.

It's an RPG, not a shooter. You shouldn't be looking at from a realistic pov. What would be the point in upgrading your skills in different weapons then ?

You want realism ? Play Arma 2.
Incidentally, I do.

But the thing with Fallout for me, is that it takes what's fundamentally the real world and changes the scenery.

Gravity is still the same.

It's not different enough for me to get beyond that whole "why isn't he DEAADD!!!" sense of things.

TES, on the other hand, establishes itself as a completely fictional entity much better in my book, so letting go of reality is much easier for me.

I've loved the Elder Scrolls series ever since I made my first pair of flying underpants in Morrowind.

While I also enjoy the Pseudo-50's sci-fi feel of the Fallout games (especially New Vegas) the Elder Scroll series beats it for me.

That said, I *did* enjoy using VATS a lot in the Fallout games, if they added that system (plus the childish-yet-fun gore) to the spell or archery systems in TES games I would be one very happy individual.

TES.
I suppose I just like the setting better.
also, no fixed damage for your firearms somehow turned me off, I don't care if I've never held a handgun before, 9mm is 9mm.

Fallout for me, I preffer it in every sense, I like guns better(although melee weapons are OK too), I like futuristic dystopic settings, I really like Fallouts 3/NV quests, etc.

That's not to say I don't like TES though, I think it's a great saga, but I'm just not fond of medieval/fantasy settings.

The stories in both aren't amazing, the story is usually shallow, but they have loads of side quests and NPC conversations
I'd like to remind you that at times of their release both Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 featured quite unique and interesting stories. Also : Morrowind. Following the adventures of Nerevarine, learning about past events that led to Dagoth's Ur actions is part of scenario too. Skyrim ? One may argue that its storyline is dull and crude, but just look at the discussions that emerge from every "who you sided with and why" topics that are born on almost daily basis here. There's depth. If one wants to see it.

Sure, every cRPG could use more dialogues or properly developed characters, but let's face it - both TES and F aren't that bad. They may be underdeveloped, they may lack some features but shallow ? Let me put it this way : which story isn't shallow ? Critically acclaimed Lord of the Rings ? It's massive FedEx mission. Citizen Kane ? Catch the MacGuffin. Dark Tower series ? Catch the MacGuffin with sudden plot twists end Deus ex Machina move.

Point is : every story can be deconstructed to the simplest elements and called "shallow". Sandbox games are special. They are a little similar to the Minecraft or lego puzzles. They leave it up to us - the players - to chose the story we want to build from the elements that are there.
I'm not sure how it is with other people but the story i've built in F or TES series were immersive, epic campaigns.

OT : Fallout. Because of the setting.
Sorry, I was talking more Fallout 3 and a bit New vegas with the story comment. Haven't played Fallout 1/2 yet.
I hope your only talking about Fallout 3 there. My vote goes to Fallout[/quote]

You should be more precise then. Fallout franchise consists of a few games, developed by different studios/corporations.

I encourage you to try F1/F2 - they aren't good looking in comparison to modern standards, but they feature both scenario and gameplay very different to F3/F:NV.

Fallout 3 was the first Bethesda game that I found accessible. Now, Fallout 3, NV, and Skyrim are some of my favorite games ever.

TES - I find post apocalyptic to be a dull environment to explore. I find the gameplay mechanics in Fallout to be poorly handled and boring. TES has a lot of problems as well, but the atmosphere and fantasy content inherently make it more appealing to me.

Fallout, because you can either play as a good guy, a bad guy, a goodie two-shoes, a monster, a magnificent bastard or a lucky dumbass.

In The Elder Scrolls, you just play a thing with no personality.

Oh, and TES doesn't have Craig Boone or Fisto the Robot.

Based purely on eclectic style, Fallout has the lead over The Elder Scrolls.

Fallout already had a strong start at its roots by being a retro-futuristic imagining of the post-apocalyptic world as envisioned by 1950s scifi writers. Just count the number of layers of fantasy have to be placed over reality in order to reach Fallout's ridiculous world.

First you have to place yourself in the world of the 1950s mindset. Then, trapping yourself within that limited understanding of social change and technological advancement, you have to imagine the future. Then you have to take that imagined future and subject it to nuclear holocaust. Then you have to reconstruct a game world from the aftermath.

In short, Fallout blows my mind.

The Elder Scrolls is already hobbled by the stigma of automatically being compared to the fantasy genre as asserted by Tolkien (and his crazy, crazy fans). While TES does excel at distancing itself from many Tolkien-based tropes (just play Morrowind and you will notice the many distinctions) it is still not as inventive as Fallout.

I don't feel like comparing the gameplay aspects of the respective games.

So I wont. In fact, I'm going to stop typing mid sen-

Although I love both, I have to say it's TES for me. Especially after that broken, maddening New Vegas (You had so much potential...I WANTED TO LOVE YOU DAMMIT!) But what it comes down to is that I love fantasy. And Skyrim. (Strokes game box)
I feel like I'm the minority for this but, I really liked New Vegas. I thought, apart from the bugs, it was an amazing game.
Your not, i liked it more too. Despite more bugs. It felt a little weirder than 3, which is a good thing :D

Both! I remember back in the 90's when one of my college buddies introduced me to Daggerfall. I was blown away by the open world aspect. 15 years later I still get blown away by the freedom that Bethesda gives you in their games. It doesn't matter if it's adventuring in Tamriel with sword in hand, or hunting mutants in a post apocalyptic America. I have always had a blast with these games, and I always tend to get my moneys worth out of em.

I prefer Fallout.

I really take sci-fi over fantasy any day. Fantasy: Why are you so not fantastical? Most sci-fi works bother to create new races that I can get to know. Even if they are heavily inspired by something else, I just like experiencing something new. I like to let creative people create things.

Dammit. I just participated in a versus thread.

I prefer TES for its setting and lore. Fallout just isn't a universe I want to spend any time in regardless of how good the games are.
