Most of it is just...sad, yet, it's nice to see people with enough passion for something to express their creativity and explore the depths of their imagination, I applaud people for that.

I didn't think much of it until I followed a link from somewhere and wound up here: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3505858/1/Uninvited_Guests. Now I've watched the Bleach series back when (until I came to my senses and realized they were deliberately dragging out the story to 3x its natural length, therefore wasting 2/3 of my watching time lol), so I was familiar with the characters enough to know what was going on.

This story is pure gold. Specifically, comedy gold. I have laughed so hard at this story, and I hope if you read it, you enjoy it too.

Honorable mention goes to a D&D story I wandered across written by the GM about his player's travails. It started off as kind of a "this player decided their char would do this, this one that" thing, and I dunno when but suddenly this guy was telling the story through the player characters eyes. And it was GOOD. One of the best fantasy stories I've ever read, and I've read a lot. And it was written EXTREMELY well, I couldn't tell the writing from a professional novelist (a really GOOD one :) ). Sadly, although the game was played through, the story was interrupted near the end and never really finished. Still a lot of great reading there though.

Hey lookie it's still there and apparently free to read - http://www.enworld.org/forum/story-hour/58227-tales-wyre.html.

Generally I like fanfiction. It can range from truly great to gut wrenchingly bad, and the problem with that is that the bad things tend to get paired up with the good when one tries to find some and one of the reasons, I feel, that people that are interested shy away from reading it is what they first read coloring their general view of the stories themselves as horrible and not worth giving a second glance.

One thing that can help is to find a good archive of fanfiction recommendations like

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FanFicRecommendations

This one has already been mentioned a few times and is a fairly good recommendation archive that splits fanfiction into categories of different mediums such as Anime from Books or TV shoes and form there into the respective shows as well. Then it separates the fics themselves by what type of fanfiction it is, from the romantic type to general stories and the like.

On the opposite end of the spectrum is the horrible ones and for that one need not look further then the same website to find another archive devoted to cataloging the bad ones.

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Horrible/Fanfic

Most of the fics that make it on to here have, for the most part, gone below the point of just bad to the truly horrendous and infamous.

So as a reader of fanfiction I hope this has helped someone.

Fanfiction is like videos made in GMod. Almost all of it is complete and utter shit, but there are a few gems.

Unlike Gmod videos, I have yet to come across these gems.
Possibly someone has already linked this, but I'm NOT reading through 7 pages of fanfic discussion.

I just wanted to link you to an actual gem. Shamus Young did a System Shock novel that is very much worth reading. If hundreds of pages of what is, basically, fanfic is your thing. It can be found here [http://www.shamusyoung.com/shocked/]
/signed that was good. I downloaded that a couple of years ago and have reread it once already.

I write it all the time because I see no issue with it. Just expanding the world of it in my own way.

However, I rarely read them because from what I've heard they're usually bad.

I write fanfiction mostly Warhammer 40,000 stuff and I like to think it isn't half bad, allot of people who know nothing of 40k have read it and enjoyed it so that's something.

There are allot of good Fanfiction, especially of 40k I tend to avoid the crap though.

Sturgeon's Law at its finest. I remember a long, LONG time ago, when reading warcraft fan fiction (BEFORE WOW), there was one author (I believe she was called J_CAE) who wrote two absolutely stunningly epic pieces. Similarly, there was some amazing Soul Calibur fan fiction back in the day. I remember I got inspired by a humor piece in warcraft with Illidan wearing a "I searched for soul edge and all I got was this lousy T-shirt" t-shirt and tried my hand, but lost motivation quickly.

But yeah...sturgeon's law, after all, fanfiction implies a lack of creativity to create original characters, original worlds, etc..., so what would you expect? IMO the one advantage of fanfiction is to have worlds with an already-established audience.

ok so, 1 - thats not a poll

2 - some of it is very good, otherwise just no...
This.

Some fanfictions are good and actually some fanfic writers decide to have a go to professional writing. Some of them are very good because of the ideas and imagination they pour into them.

It depends on the series... the more popular it is the harder it is to find a gem among an ever growing cesspool of nightmare fueled fantasies of some people.

Seeing as there are plenty of other people advertising their own work here, here's a piece that I've been working on in my own time.

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6743410/3/Borderlands_The_Movie

I can't promise that it's any good, but as a script writer it was a fun change to go from writing entirely original pieces to letting my hair down and just seeing how much fun I could have with the pre-existing lore.

I've found the best pieces have some sense of respect towards the original material rather than just seeing how many erotic fantasies they can involve the characters in.

The challenge from there is finding the ones with this sense of respect AND half decent writing skills. They do exist.

I'm for it.

There is A LOT of bad fanfiction out there. Some that should never be written or read. EVER. Probably just as much bad "original fiction" too. But sometimes there are gems.

Aaaaand... it's also a good way for beginner writers to practice. Sure, it probably won't be very good. You might even grow out of it. But you learned something from it. You've already got your characters, settings, and everything lined up. You just add to it. It's like those "write your own ending" assignments they gave us in school where we got to write an extra chapter to a book we finished reading. Or a "what if" story.

Plus, c'mon, we've all been hardcore fans of something in our lives. There are FAAAR worse things you could proving that with.

I write and read fanfiction as well, and I will admit that most of it is crap, but there are a few out there that are really well written and engaging. You just have to sift through the mountains of shit stories to find the good ones. Usually once you find a particular author that you like you can track down other good stories and authors through their favorites, homepages, yahoo groups or in fic suggestions.
Too true. This must be what it's like to be an publisher, sifting through submissions. But without getting paid for it.

You can't really say all fanfiction is bad because what would that even mean? That's like saying because Twilight is a piece of shit, all books are bad. Or because Too Human was a piece of shit, all video games are bad. Some fanfics are great, some of horrible. Enough said.

It all depends on the author, the saying goes that the remaining 10% is worth dying for, [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ptitle3tinj4tz] and I personally agree, most fanfiction is absolute shite, but amidst the sea of filth there will be the odd diamond in the rough, that's what the fanfic recs page is for [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FanFicRecommendations]

taking fanfics seriously would destroy any integrity that series would have. Game mods are likewise, in my opinion (except for games which leave ample room for modding, and encourage it).

Not all of it is terrible, and I suppose it all depends on the author, there are some really good ones out there if you know where to look. I will admit I've read some god awful stories, I can't help but wonder what made them decide that hat they wrote was good. I've read some really good ones though, and those are the ones that keep me coming back to read more of them.

People here have already linked to the tvtropes page for recommendations, so I won't. Besides, I don't need to loose more time there than I need too.
