Then I pity you, for there is some truly great fanfiction out there. Unfortunately, the one I'm thinking of was taken down because the person forgot to say that he didn't come up with the premise and some dipshit reported him for plagiarizing.
There's a shitload of awful fanfiction that gives the remaining 10-15% a bad name.
"Truly-great fanfiction" is an oxymoron at best and a paradox at worst.

I agree that most fanfiction is horribly written and a disgrace to the franchise or mythos that is being portrayed but sometimes you come across one good one. Most bothers the living hell out of me. I have mixed feelings about it. When you want a series expanded alittle because you found it to be too short then ill look up something on it.

Yeah, they are mostly crap, but I do find the occasional gem. There are also those that are terrible but one loves anyway, Doom: Repercussions of evil and Half-Life Full-Life Consequences.

Fan fiction and I have an understanding, we stay away from each other. At times I have had ideas for a fanfic that would expand the storyline of something in an understandable way, but I never actually right this stuff down because of all of the truly terrible fics I have read.

My ex would always right Harry Potter fanfics and I really didn't need that. Sorry, but I'll read stuff that is actually written by professionals and write stuff that is of my own creation.

I don't know, fan-fiction can actually be good. I know, I know, this is the part where I get stoned to death, but hear me out. I'm not saying all of it is good, or even half is, or even .000001% of it is even good, so, yea. What I am saying is that .0000001% that is actually good? It's pretty dang good and worth a read almost every time.

My secret to finding the good and avoiding the bad? Have a friend that reads fan-fiction, let him go out and look for the good among the seas of eye-gouging hell, and enjoy when he finds it and links me to it. Yea, I'm kinda an ass, but I haven't read anything that's made me want to tear my eyes out for at least a year now because of it.

It can only be as good or bad as its authors. I haven't actually read any good ones, though.

That said, I don't understand the "OMG PEOPLE ARE WRITING GAY SLASHFIC RUN FOR THE HILLS" reaction. It's not like anyone is forcing you to read this stuff. Even if the thought of someone writing a story like this fills you with mortal terror, you should realize that fanfiction is inoffensive compared to most things on the Internet.

As long as it's well done, It's fine by me. Granted most of it IS crap, though.

Personally, me and two friends are planning a SMT: Devil Survivor fanfic where the lockdown hits our town instead of Tokyo. We haven't had time to start it yet, though.

Fanfiction is to writing as tracing is to drawing. If you really want to tell a story, come up with one yourself, don't just piggyback off other peoples characters and settings.

Of course most fanfiction writers just want write about their favourite characters having sex anyway.

As a fanfiction writer myself, I try to give it a good name. I will say that there is a lot of it out there that is truly horrible, but I have yet to find one that completely destroys me.

Personally, I hold high standards for my own stories, and low standards for other people's stories. The high standards I put on myself let me write the best stories I can, and having low standards for other people's stories lets me enjoy even a mediocre fanfic.

It's a mixed bag really. For every person that carefully writes, carefully plans, and carefully proofreads, there's about ten people that write the first thing that comes to mind with no regards for grammar.

A little tip: I stay far the hell away from fanfiction.com. Unless someone links to a good story on there, I stay as far away as possible. Seriously, there's some horrible stuff there. I stick to DeviantART, where people at least have half a mind. (Mostly).

Hmm... never read fanfiction, I stick to the official story stuff and be done with it. Is there something like really good stuff in which the writers don't fantasize about who's going to bone who?

I originally thought that all fanfiction was awful and none of it was worth my time, then someone I'm friends with sent me a link to a story he was writing based off of Bleach, and it was surprisingly good. Ever since I've been using a sort of lemon law on Fanfictions, if the first chapter is well-written without being overtly terrible I give it a shot. Oh and a rule of thumb is to avoid any romance-fanfictions, those are always annoying.

They also tend to respond to trolling with the control and maturity of a third grader, I'd like to add. Especially if the subject matter is already either divisive, emotionally charged or both.

The above statement also covers my own opinion of fanfics.

fanfiction in and of itself is a mixed bag, i personally love it, i mostly read Naruto fanfics, due to the fact that there is such a massive number of them that i can really find quite a few good ones, i have written some myself, but it was never a true gem, just above average, since i am able to spell correctly.

However one story i read, called Kage no Naruto, written by artful lounger, was magnificent, it was over 400 000 words and ie read it 4 times in total. Also everything that the silent muse writes is great, too bad that he quit

99% of all fanfiction suck. Reading them can range between an experience like someone smashing a brick in your face to staring into the abyss only to realize that not only is the abyss staring back, but it's making a rude gesture at you.

But somewhere within the massive feces pile, there's that 1%. The small collection of stories with actual drive and spark behind them. Ones that were lovingly crafted by people who truly adore the story the fanfiction was based off of, and used that story to actually explore things, taking the world in new directions.

Those fanfics don't quite redeem the entire medium, but they do let me ignore most of the shit.

Though on occasion, there are really bad fanfics that are so bad that they're a joy to read, like a fanfiction version of Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.

It's a really dependent thing. Dependent on the show, the writer, the topic the fanfic is about; "Fanfiction" shouldn't be given one broad verdict, because the quality found in it can range from "better than the source material" to "I want to claw my eyes out. Why would anyboddy publish something this terrible?"
