"Truly-great fanfiction" is an oxymoron at best and a paradox at worst.
That's not necessarily true. It is true that most fanfiction is bad, but if you search around, and you include the fancomics (they count) there is some pretty awesome fanfiction. I myself have written some based on Sonic the Hedgehog and a lot of people have told me it's pretty good. What I mean is, fanfiction isn't bad by definition. It just has a massive stigma attached.
Next time, why don't you try having an actual argument? It makes your point seem much more valid.
Did I ever say fanfiction was bad in that post? Reread what I typed, please. Besides, the mark of a good writer is to make his argument in as few words as possible.
Perhaps. But making your point in a single sentence serves no purpose when you do not present evidence as to why you are correct.

Perhaps you would like to try again?

Oh, it was wacky, son. Did I mention Goku and Anne totes fall ass-over-teakettle in love? Because they totes fall ass-over-teakettle in love.
Oh god. Now I just need to convince whoever did the abridged animes thing to make one of that.

Great fanfiction is some of the best writing you will ever see and is done by people with a wonderful love of their subject.

Horrible fanfiction can be just as entertaining, albeit in a trainwreck kind of way.

That, sadly, accounts for about 1% of what's out there. The rest is drivel that I can't be bothered to sort through.

Depends on the fandom and what they do with it. I've managed to come across some fairly well-written fics, but there are mountains and mountains of horrible crap that you have to wade through. The key is actually wanting to find those good ones, which I did, at the time.

The good stuff is well worth sorting through the crap to get at. Especially when the crap is as unintentionally funny as it can be.

Haha as a fanfiction writer (I've got 4 on-going fics atm a Persona 3 Portable one, two Naruto ones and an Okami one) I know that there is some AMAZING fanfics out there. Scarlet Divinity is one of my favourites for her two Itachi stories alone anyways.

As with 'actual' fiction it all depends on the writer. If the writer is shit, the fanfic will be shit, if the writer is good you're in for a treat. Unfortunately the reason so much bad fanfiction is written is simply because in the real world of fiction you have an editor and publisher telling you it's shit if it is. Fanfiction writers don't have anyone advising them so they have to simply believe their work is good and someone will enjoy it. XD

I think that saying we're vile or disgusting or awful is a bit harsh. XD

Seeing as I have written fanfiction (got three chapters of a Mass Effect fanfic floating around Fanfiction.net), it would be a bit hypocritical to dislike it. It can be written poorly, but so can professional stories as well. It's not professional quality, but to dismiss it entirely would be like dismissing anime as "all being like Pokemon". Not all fanfiction is My Immortal status.

Edit: Also, Other M is a case of professionally poor storywriting.

Not to parrot everyone else on here, but it's all about quality. There is some good, some bad, mostly mediocre. There is a fairly large amount of horrendous and disturbing bits and pieces, and very occasionally there are jems.
(See http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FanFicRecommendations)

I'll admit to writing some when I'm bored, but it's either because I've got a block on my original works (I'll finish that novel) or because it's to cheer someone up. My English skills do surpass a hell of a lot of the fanfiction writers out there, and I say that without feeling bigheaded in the slightest.

Sometimes I look up fanfiction of my favorite fandoms as a sort of guilty pleasure. Surprisingly, it's not all that bad. You just have to know where to search and how to weed out the bad ones.

Most of it terrible. There are exceptions to the rule but I usually wait for my more patient friends to recommend them. Face it, novels based off games/movies/TVshows are usually fanfiction anyway, they just don't call it as such and make a bit of dough off it on the side.

And yes 99.8% of all fanfiction is pretty god awful and written by tweenies high off alot of caffeine and sugar after watching their favorite show, but one day you'll read one you really get into and think; 'Well damn'.

I think I've read about ... 4 good ones. All in different categories.

I've tried to write fanfiction a couple times but never finished anything. I've read good fanfiction that expands on the characters and puts them in interesting scenarios and I've read bad fanfiction that's pretty much the author unleashing their bizarre fantasies into writing.

I hardly ever read any of it, not because I dismiss it as crap but because I just plain don't care to read someone elses FanFic when I could be crafting my own. Though I haven't in a while, I do enjoy writing them.

I like it. And occasionally I write it.

Not to say some can't suck. Some can and do suck. I've even gone through a few issues when I first got into it that taught me a few things.

But really, it's all subjective.

Fanfiction is like videos made in GMod. Almost all of it is complete and utter shit, but there are a few gems.

Unlike Gmod videos, I have yet to come across these gems.
Possibly someone has already linked this, but I'm NOT reading through 7 pages of fanfic discussion.

I just wanted to link you to an actual gem. Shamus Young did a System Shock novel that is very much worth reading. If hundreds of pages of what is, basically, fanfic is your thing. It can be found here [http://www.shamusyoung.com/shocked/]
