I don't know about other nations, but in the states obesity has been declared an epidemic. Having worked in an OR, I can tell you that while I think this classification is as misguided as declaring alcoholism a disease, over 95% of the patients I've worked with were obese, and greater than 80% were morbidly so.
The amount of trash we consume is rather alarming, and it's certainly having a tremendous negative impact on our collective health - but what do you think about overweight people in general? My avatar has been met with a mix of curiosity and vitriol for being fat; I've been told that fat people are a disgrace to the species and a symbol of decadence, and one member tried to get me on probation after threatening me for using her image. When I discuss different body image archetypes on The Escapist, at least one guy always tells me with absolute certainty that she'll be a diabetic with varicose veins and a bad back within the decade. Rarely do I encounter any consideration for the fact that many large people have thyroid deficiencies or are otherwise genetically predisposed.
So what do you think?
