Depends on what kind of RPG. I generally only pick stealth if it means that I can insta-kill people through stealth and not just turning invisible to get a backstab attack. Otherwise, I pick melee or ranged depending on the genre of the RPG, so if I'm playing Dragon Age I'm a knight, but if I play Fallout 3 or Mass Effect I usually take ranged stuff like sniping.

Man, this seems rather vague.

i usually play either a stealth class or warrior class. i like em both but whenever i play dragon age i always play a rouge because they can pick locks and they have the most things to level up

Oh....and here I thought this was a thread about the methods of attack, and the strategies and tactics which revolve around them.

I was disappointed. Teaches me to get my hopes up.

OT: I favor Ranged Attacks. The more I can chip away at an enemy, the lesser a threat they become.

I tend to go the Spellsword/Warmage approach, so I usually announce my presence with a volley of fireballs before wading into melee with a claymore, laughing manically. Err, since my opening attack is either flinging fireballs or summoning demons I went with magic, although for most of the combat I'm dishing out melee damage.

Stealth, very few RPGs offer this option a lot of them offer the thief class, which seems to be a renamed warrior class that is more agile than sneaky. The few RPG's that include a stealth class that allows you to sneak behind guards then kill them with a neck snap (or back stab) are the type i like to play stealth in. If that isn't an option then im a Kamikaze Class, max attack, max speed, min defence (cause i don't put any points into it), and a lot of health potions :D.

Most rpgs I'll pick stealth. However if it's like oblivion and more strength means you can carry more shit, then probably melee. They tend to be stronger.

I can't take steath seriesly when all i do is press a button, i go with melee.

If steath was like it is in steath games then i would go with it.

It varies from game to game, but usually I prefer to stay away from the action. Under ideal circumstances this means having things do the fighting for me and serve as meat shields (sentries, summons, allies, etc.). That way I'm still fighting but I'm not the one getting shot/stabbed in the face. Is it cowardly? Yes, which is why it is my preferred fighting style. If I can't distract the enemy with a meat shield, I'll use any type of ranged attack from bows to magic.

But then there are games like Bioshock, in which I have an urge to bludgeon everything with a wrench even when it is incredibly stupid to do so.

Stealth isn't something I usually do because it's to unreliable. There's always a chance the enemy could just turn around for no reason and ruin everything, and that drives me insane every time it happens.

Thick Armor, Huge Weapon, and lots of Rage! - yeah, you guessed it right, Melee is my choice.
This is off-topic, but I have to say that you avatar summarizes one of the thing I really hate about Golden Sun and fantasy games in general; stupidly elaborate summons that look like they are destroying huge chunks of the world only to chip away a fraction of an enemies massive health pool.

I always like being a stealthy character, thieves and assasins and similar. Sadly, these bits in bigger games are never realised particularly well.

It depends entirely on the Attack Engines, but I normally favor the magics.

Isn't it fun to just, turn a person into a solid ice sculpture and than, just, SMASH it with a mace! *Laughs to his own scheme of thoughts*
Oooh! Oooh! How about, channeling / throwing so much energy into them in forms of lightning / fire to turn them into a fine, soylent powder!

... Gives me the shivers! Woosh!

rpgs, bowmaster+cqc stealth ownage. Any other game, stealth all the way. Nothing more satisfying then sinking a blade into someones back without anyone realising... and then there's the thrill of the hunt, approach, tension etc.. try playing CS stealth-knifing while listening to heavy metal. Quite fun.

Whenever avaible, whatever is the closed thing to a healer, though I like to pick something melee if possible too,a prime example of this would be the Paladin in world of warcraft.

But other than that it is just random to me,the only real deciding factor is if healing is avaible, one such choice was picking Roland in Borderlands, just because he could spec so that his turrent could heal.

*edit:therefore,I choose magic.
