It varies from game to game, but usually I prefer to stay away from the action. Under ideal circumstances this means having things do the fighting for me and serve as meat shields (sentries, summons, allies, etc.). That way I'm still fighting but I'm not the one getting shot/stabbed in the face. Is it cowardly? Yes, which is why it is my preferred fighting style. If I can't distract the enemy with a meat shield, I'll use any type of ranged attack from bows to magic.
But then there are games like
Bioshock, in which I have an urge to bludgeon everything with a wrench even when it is incredibly stupid to do so.
Stealth isn't something I usually do because it's to unreliable. There's always a chance the enemy could just turn around for no reason and ruin everything, and that drives me insane every time it happens.

Thick Armor, Huge Weapon, and lots of Rage! - yeah, you guessed it right, Melee is my choice.
This is off-topic, but I have to say that you avatar summarizes one of the thing I really hate about
Golden Sun and fantasy games in general; stupidly elaborate summons that look like they are destroying huge chunks of the world only to chip away a fraction of an enemies massive health pool.
