I don't really like Liara. She seems too easy to romance, has the worst (in my opinion) character development and her voice seems to annoy me.
A good explanation for why she is easy to romance is that she has been in your head. Twice. That is like having a million conversations.
I always got the impression she only looked for specific information pertaining to the reaper invasion.

Add to that fact that she already said it was hard enough to get through to Shepard's mind, she may have not been able to communicate in any way to him other than what I have said above.

Regardless, that was not something I had considered. Still, there wasn't much in the way of indication. I know she is supposed to be useless in terms of human emotions and such, but the way she comes across just seems... clumsy.

I don't know. It just bugs me.

I choose Liara.
Well, Wrex and Liara. Liara proved herself useful when I started playing as a sharpshooter and having Wrex with her formed a real dream team. Liara throwing the targets in to the air made battles sometimes more skeet shooting than fighting and in the meantime Wrex pounded the rest of the attackers from on the ground to in the ground.
I only had trouble when Wrex berserked himself into death leaving me with a slow overheating long-range gun (which was kind of useless when a pack of husks were closer to me than the shooting end of my rifle) and Liara throwing pebbles at the swarming armies of machine soldiers.

I've always liked Garrus. Sort of a bad-cop amongst a race whose mindset is similar to a civic-minded humanity's. Him and Wrex were my favorite left and right hand "men", one exhibiting straightforward competence and the other being raw intimidation factor.

you can't make her open locked boxes for you so what use is she other than a human shield with a shitty pistol/shotgun?
What? Yes you can, she comes with both Electronics and Decryption. She can open everything.
How the fuck do I make her do that?

You just have to have her skill level high enough for to open the container. If you don't put points into the skills then it'll just say " not high enough" or something like that.

Liara was mary-sue scum, like all other Asari.
Kaidan was Carth 2.0.
Tali stopped being interesting when she announced that she's a princess.
Garrus was a pretty cool guy.
Ashley was an interesting character and had reasoning for her motivations.
Wrex had the best dynamic with Shepard no matter if you're paragon or Renegade and he got the best lines.

You just put skillpoints into Electronics and Decryption, she'll automatically open stuff when you do (something they sadly didn't take over to Dragon Age. Switching characters just to unlock chests gets tedious).

Both skills come pre-unlocked on her as well, so you can max them out quite quickly.

And Mordin. He seems like he would be interesting.
He would get very annoying after 5 minutes. But it doesn't matter, he's an NPC (thank God).

I wish there was a salarian who could join the team, albeit one who doesn't speak a million miles an hour about nothing.
You mean the scientist Salarian? He's recruitable; check here [http://www.gametrailers.com/episode/gametrailers-tv/78?ch=1&sd=0].
...what? Really? And here I was, playing ME1, thinking it'd be cool to have a salarian on my team.

Mordin is annoying as hell, Subject Zero is nuts (she reminds me of that girl in the game Wet), Grunt lacks the witty quips of Wrex...

I reiterate: Man, these new party members are gonna SUUUUUCK...
I think you're only looking at face-value, what's only been shown through trailers and blurbs. I've made that mistake before, and I think it's worth considering that there may be a lot to them than what a minute and a half of combat footage show.

Wrex and Ashley, because they both have notable flaws but nevertheless are entertaining to listen to. Wrex is just so damn awesome and Ashley while flawed isn't a bigot, she can be convinced to put her ways aside and has no problem working with aliens. She also at one point accuses Terra Firma of being xenophobic jackals who replace noble values of the party with anti alien propaganda. She's flawed yes but by no means a bigot.

So yeah, Wrex needs no other explanation other than that he is Wrex. So there are my two favourites, Wrex and Ashley.

Ashley, because she's quite the sexy badass :p

I don't enjoy her religious/anti-alien crap, though.

I loved Kaidan because he had the most level head of the entire group. Not just that but he was really useful in a fight once I got some levels into him so he wasn't so squishy. He could shut down both biotics and equipment so that me and Wrex could mess them up while they were trying to regroup. On a personality level he's the one I can agree with most. He has this angst filled background that didn't turn him into a cry baby like so many others. He accepted what happened and moved on. Also he is one of the few (him and Garrus) that can see both sides of the coin instead of just their way of the world. I would count Liara but personally her character got boring fast so I stopped paying attention.
