Frank Herbert. He is better than all those 6 combined.(Not really...)Dune is epic. And it's a crime to leave him out.
My favorite Sci Fi author is still Weber, but I do have to give Herbert an honorable mention, I just started God Emperor of Dune, and I'm loving the series.
Don't read anything Dune related past Chapterhouse:Dune, which was Frank's last book. Sadly the Dune series was never concluded, as Frank died before finishing the last book. So don't buy Dune books that don't have Frank Herbert name on it. Stay away from Brian "I murdered my fathers work" Herbert and Kevin J. Hackanderson Dune books. STAY AWAY!
If you ever finish Chapterhouse, just make your own ending, it's guaranteed that will be better than that crap Brian and Kevin conjured up.

But anyway, I'l pick Lovecraft from the list.

Yeah, that's what I've heard, it's unfortunate. By the way, I just realized I haven't friended you and have no idea how that is, I've sent you a request.

WTF! Are you serious? Lovecraft is not, and I say absolutly not! Sci-Fi.
All his stories are placed in the 19th century and that is not science fiction. H.P. Lovecraft is Horror. Some authors who were inspired by Loveraft were Sci-Fi authors but not Lovecraft himself. You fail at so many levels!

That's why I voted for Wells, his "War of the Worlds" was just epic.
Jules Verne stuff also happens in the 19th century and he is Sci-Fi. Lovecraft is a mist of Fantasy and Sci-Fi depending on which story you pick. Some use intergalactic travels and aliens, others not.

I believe Lovecraft liked to call his work 'weird fiction' rather than sci-fi, fantasy, or even horror. Even his most 'sci-fi' work, probably The Colour Out of Space, is far from anything even remotely similar to the other author on that lists work.

So while Lovecraft is my favorite of the list, as far as sci-fi goes I'd give it to H.G.Wells for War of the Worlds. Love that book!

Yes, some stories could be related to science fiction, but still they are more related to the genre of horror because the stories are not postulated under the laws of physics but more under the sheer horror of unexplainable things. So Lovecraft doesn't belong to Sci-Fi rather than Horror just like Poe and Pierce.

Personally I would say Philip K. Dick or Frank Herbert but if I have to pick one from the list I think I'll go with Jules Verne. The guy has some great stories under his belt, as do all of them, but I've read more of his than anyone else. It's also important to remember just how damn influential he was for future Sci-fi authors.

Out of those? Lovecraft.

But dammit, Douglas Adams should be up there.
Of course, why did you leave Adams out? This poll is very imperfect.

Of those? Hmmm... I'll pick Jules Verne.

I've always wanted to read some of Lovecraft's work, but I never got around to it, and that makes me a sad panda. =(

Because of how much his children's science books did for me in elementary school, I'm tempted to go with Asimov.

Well, of those it'd have to be H.G. Wells.

But outside of that massive array of options you've so kindly given us /sarcasm (Let me guess, those are your favorites...), I would choose either Douglas Adams or Peter F. Hamilton
