As everyone else, I go with the thief.

I see that the shadow got 4 votes, what's wrong with people it's completely useless.
I dunno, it was pretty fun in Seyda Neen. Other than that... Yeah.

I pretty much always go with either Thief or Apprentice, depending on whether i'll be casting spells or not.

Thief. I never use birthsign powers, since putting them in your quickselect is a waste of space since you can only use it once per day, and the menus suck. Speaking about Oblivion here of course.
But I think I remember reading that birthsigns are not in Skyrim, though.
Some have lesser powers that can be used mutlple times costing magicka rather than once a day. The Ritual you can turn undead, which is pretty useful, the Lord you get a cheap always successful healing spell that cannot be affected by stuff like Silence, decent for a warrior early on and healing between fights.

That actually makes sense with Birthsigns, lore wise they're only on certain datesg, rather than a time of year like our starsigns. Perhaps because you're Dragon-born it's another rarer event.

In morrowind, I always went for the steed since walk speed in the beginning is so painfully slow otherwise. I think I picked mage in oblivion.

Who the hell uses The Tower in Oblivion? 5% Reflect Damage is incredibly weak and Open Average Lock? HAH, Useless! Oh it's only once per day? Even more useless! Just get 1 measly lockpick and you can pick open any lock from the start. (That would be in Oblivion) Or just level alteration.

Personally, I use the magicka boosting or the stat boosting ones. I never remember that I have the Greater Powers so they become useless for me, sadly. The Lord is a great sign for characters that aren't good with restoration and don't have a sizable magicka pool. It's really magicka efficient and is a Lesser Power. When you have so much health that is becomes useless then you have either gotten so powerful you don't need it or you have 100 alchemy and can make unlimited restore health potions.

Depends what I'm planning my character to be...

Warrior type - The lady (More endurance and willpower for defense, although on Morrowind was it not Endurance + Personality? That helped too as I usually played an Orc and they don't exactly have a high personality. Also 80 odd endurance at the start of the game is awesome)

Thief type - Usually the Thief sign, sometimes Steed because making a Khajiit with over 70 speed at the start of the game is fun if a little useless later on...

Mage type - Probably the apprentice, the mage didn't feel like it gave enough extra magicka and when enemies used magic they were usually so retarded with it its easy to dodge so the weakness to magic wasn't so terrible.

I rather like the Thief, but I find the Lord to be most useful.

The healing spells are really the only efficient way to heal in Oblivion and the basic spell pretty much sucks. The Lesser Power heal the Lord gets is great.

I also ALWAYS play Drow (It's NOT Dunmer! SHUT UP) and their Fire Resistance cancels the negative effects of the Lord quite nicely.
