Because it's old, mostly. I remember staring at the 1982 Sears wishbook wishing I had one. Probably just as well I didn't get one as the device was apparently prone to failure.
But it isn't the first cartridge-base handheld game system. That was probably the Microvision [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microvision] in 1979.
The Adventurevision just seemed like it would have had more potential if it had ironed out the hardware bugs that caused them to break down. But that wouldn't be realized until the Game Boy came along seven years later.
But then, Adventurevision isn't a true handheld game system as it was made to rest on a tabletop. I suppose if i count Adventurevision, I should also count the Vectrex [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vectrex] since it was also portable and a car cigarette lighter adapter was available.
