An enemy is an enemy. They stand between you and a goal and they must be dealt with. In this case, they have a gun; you have a gun. It is simple. Whether the enemy is a man, a woman, an alien, or whatever else you can think of, they are trying to kill you and you are trying to survive. I don't have any problem whether a man is shooting at me or a woman is shooting at me, I just care that both genders are represented equally.

If it is an urban street gang game (Saints Row or GTA) then I would be baffled by having a lot of female enemies. I watch the show Gangland all the time and the female population of gangs are either prostitutes, drug dealers or just the girlfriend of gang member. A rough percentage of woman that are literal gangsters is somewhere between like 1% and 2%. In Mass Effect or even just a modern war game I would expect to see a decent population of female enemies and ally soldiers considering there are a good bit of females serving in the military.

I prefer killing males in video-games than females.

I know it's horrible of me, but I've always had this deep, subconscious thought that the only way I'd get a girl-friend if a large number of "competing" guys died. When I kill guys in games, it feels like I'm making it more likely.

I feel like a terrible person for even thinking that, and I've been trying to stop, but I just can't.

I do like enemies becoming more responsive to bullets though. Seeing a dead enemy with a couple red patches on his uniform and a row of bullet holes behind him seems like a greater testament to my accomplishment than a baddie falling to the ground bloodlessly before fading away.

I figured you don't see many female enemies in games because it's difficult to accentuate femininity in full body armour, or I can't really tell the difference between men and women in any races other than human.

As for lady advesaries? Everyone is equal at the end of a barrel. And I'll leave it at that. ;)

I understand that you can't help the reflex, but this is essentially a matter of gender discrimination; so, I will show consistent mercy to my enemies, be they male or female. My consistent level of mercy being "if they attack me, I kill them".

As for realistic reaction (screaming, etcetera), I think it's completely up to the game designers. In The Legend of Zelda, I expect enemies to either wince a little and flash red, or explode into magical dust. But for other games, particularly the ones with very serious stories and a lot of complexity, I see no reason they shouldn't make you really contend with your actions and their consequences.

To be slightly specific I felt bad that entire mission, every one of those mercs I shot at the beginning were the same as that one kid with the pistol. As for female enemies I could give a crap, they're all just targets shooting back at me.

As for the reactions they don't really affect me. Even some of the worse examples, ( Mass Effect's ammo death scenes ) plus I can never take the time to really notice, I just pop from target to target, and they're dead before they could possibly feel pain, especially since we as gamers for the head.
