We all know the internet myth/meme "there are no girls on the internet" which is obviously hyperbolic but looking around you see a strong impression/assumption that if not all then the overwhelming majority of users here are male.

I can imagine why females would want to blend in as 'just another guy' but I haven't actually heard many opinions on this.

Does a lie of ommitance count? If not, then no. I never overtly state that I am female (usually), and no-one really out-right asked me. So, no.

Like I could pull that off. I am just myself. Although, if I was ever online playing games on my 360 (I don't see me doing that any time soon) I probably would. Don't want to deal with "OMG, A GIRL!?" *insert sexist and immature comments and harassment here*

But just on the internet? No. I have no need.

Considering my username here is the one I apply to most places, it's kinda hard for me to cover that up. Regardless, I don't go out of my way to state specifically what my gender is- it's not important. Decent folk will move along with little more than a 'huh', and anyone who reacts to the presence of estrogen with insults and derogatory terms deserves the personal ban and report I just sent to the powers that be- at least let me do something wrong before you act like a mentally challenged pre-teen.

Yeah, all the time. I don't see why I should begrudge myself the fun of making penis jokes just because I happen to be a girl. They don't know that, after all.

I'm ashamed to admit that I have done this. I found in some online game that people took me a lot more seriously when I had a blue tag next to my name indicating I was male. It was kinda funny though, I could really lay it on thick and nobody suspected a thing ;D

Sure. Just to get away from the annoying harassment. And the messages. Get away from me, you creeps.

So I just pick a guy avatar sometimes.

That's the short story.

God, I can't imagine how bad some of the messages must get. I mean, who plays games looking for that kind of stuff? Isn't it supposed to be about blowing off some steam in a relaxed setting?

And on a completely unrelated note, your avatar made me laugh when I saw it.

I have no words.
Except complete and utter rage actually. Yeah, rage sounds about right.

I kind of stopped playing online because of that - Not only did I ALWAYS end up having to play with sexist douchebags, but they were also most of the time racist.

OMG, that's unbelievable.

My wife only plays female avatars, but she doesn't use voice so most ppl assume she is a guy and she doesn't correct them.

My last gf stopped using voice and switched to male avatars after getting repeatedly harrassed.
Precisely why I stopped the whole "ventrilo/voice required" thing. Dumped my microphome/headset and got a good pair of headphones. My days of raiding in WoW and such are over anyway, but still. I want to play Firefall, yet not be bothered by these juveniles. Hoping I can find the right group to play with.

Nope. I'm not really bothered by how people react to a girl playing online or whatever, plus I don't really play multiplayer anymore.

I see a fair bit of girls online (male here) so the myth isn't true. I do know of a few that-

NO

I won't even chance risking the secret :D

Ugh, that video is just terrible. I feel sorry for any girls who have to put up with that kind of stuff online....that said, I'm a male, most if not all of my online avatars are either a female named Sithelynne, or a male named Raijha.......guess which one I get more tells on, although never anything quite to that degree.

I really don't think they need to pretend anything.

I think so precisely because of that "There are no women on the internet" thought.

People just assume users are male, because that line above has somehow become an accepted fact by many. Personally i try not to assume anything 'cause that way i won't get into any embarrasing situations again...

I don't try to be sexist, but I usually just assume male until told otherwise. Then I usually stay cautions cause I know guy's will pretend to be girls for perks and such. I've actually talked with my lotro kin leader's wife, she was a nice gal. One time I didn't realize she was on an alt and I basically said, "Well I'm her favorite." Few seconds later I got a PM, "I saw that" Invite to fellowship, "Hiya! What can I do for you today ma'am?" I then proceeded to get a combination of her chewing me out and both of us laughing. Too bad she and her husband stopped playing for some time.
[EDIT]
<-- Is male.
