I generally like fighting games. But I never really know what are some good titles. Because no one I know who is a gamer likes them and don't even play them. They just seem to be the most hated kind of game. So basically I wondered what you think of them and if you play them?

when I was a kid I loved figthing games, now I play them every now and then... which leads me to believe that something changed from the old arcadey figthing games to the current ones.

I have my series that I enjoy; Tekken, Soul Caliber, Guilty Gear/BlazBlue, etc.

I find (overall) they're the most fun with friends or online.

I love fighting games, especially the Capcom vs games.

There are a lot of different fighting games, so it's hard to tell which ones are the 'good' ones. One might love King of Fighters but hate Soul Calibur, or be a pro at Guilt Gear but suck at Tekken. While they're all basically about the same thing (one character beating up another character), there are some huge differences in gameplay between the various titles. And it's not about how famous a game is, because many obscure doujin fighters have their devoted followers as well.

Personally, I like the combo-oriented ones better. Street Fighter tends to fall into the hardcore trap, meaning that you need dead precision and insane patience to be even mildly successful.

I'm much more into fighters like Tekken and DoA.

I always find a really crazy character and learn at least a few ways on how to go nuts with him against friends. Yoshimitsu in SC, Dan Hibiki in SF... characters like that.

I never play them online anymore though. Even with a good connection a split-second of lag can screw you up and odds are I'll either face someone much better than me or someone who uses a really cheap strategy like staying as far away as possible and launching hadoukens then just shoryukening any jump i make to get over them.

I tried it when I was borrowing SF from a friend and went like 2-15 as Dan Hibiki.

Fighting games do my head in. The only one i have liked has been Soul Calibre 2. That had variety.

All the rest have recycled 2 minute fights that have no reason for existance.

I am utterly terrible at any/all fighting games. Last fighting game I could play decently was street fighter II on the snes and even then I had a turbo controller.

I used to arcade shark Street Fighter 2 when it was all the rage. These days I don't really play much anymore but I do appreciate the advancements being made by Blaze Blue. At least someone is trying to make a good fighting game.

I was really big into the Gamecube version of Soul Calibur 2. I will pick up a fighting game if I am really looking forward to it.

Huge fighting game fanatic here!

Games to look out for:

- Capcom Vs SNK 2 (EO)
- Marvel VS Capcom 2 (fun but a bit spammy!)
- Soul Calibur 2, (all the other ones don't seem as good)
- Dead Or Alive Ultimate, (i.e DOA 1 and 2 set)
- Street Fighter 3 (Anniversary is also good as you get SF2 animated movie and the stupidly hard Hyper Street Fighter 2 as well!)
- Street Fighter Alpha series (the best ones for me were 2 and 3, but 3 has way more characters!)
- Street Fighter 4 (So great!)
- Tekken 3/Tekken Tag Tournament (both are the best in my opinion, but 6 is decent, and I heard 5 was pretty good too. 4 although not bad just isn't worthy in comparisson)
- JoJo's Bizarre adventure (the oddest fighting game of all time in my opinion! good though :D)
- Darkstalkers (Street fighter on acid!)
- Blazblue (haven't played it, but I hear good things about it!)

For the real elitists (i.e. people who have OCD when it comes to this kinda thing! XD):

- Virtua Fighter 4 (3 is good as well, but nobody really plays it)
- King Of Fighters series (take ya pick! XD)
- Guilty Gear (damn hard!)
- MUGEN (its not stricly a game, but you look on youtube and see what the fights on there can be like! :0)

But there are alot more fighter out there on the arcades and consoles that have good cult followings, such as Rival Schools, and Tobal No.1.

EDIT: I will say though not everyone is into fighting games.A lot of gamers stick to a select pool of genres. My best bud is no fan of fighters really, (but he did get tekken 6 recently so like me he's quite open minded!), but I love 'em. However, I absolutely LOATHE Football games, and any form of racing simulation, (I do like cart racers though, (but I suck at them! XD)).

The fighting games I do play I enjoy immensely. I also tend to be pretty good at them, perhaps pro-gamer level as far as Tekken goes. Well, Tekken 5 anyway. I'm still trying to get around Yoshimitsu's changes in Tekken 6.

Recently, Tekken 6 has pretty much been the only game I play. This is probably going to change today, as there is a strong chance that I pick up Bayonetta, but even then, Tekken 6 will be no stranger to my Xbox.

Fighting games I enjoy:
Tekken (obviously)
Street Fighter

These days, it seems like fighting games are the only new releases that consistently warrant a day one purchase with me. I've been playing them my entire life, and it doesn't seem likely that I'll be stopping any time soon.

Here's some fighting games I like that also happen to have fairly active online communities:
Street Fighter IV
Blazblue
Tekken 6
Soul Calibur IV
Super Smash Bros. Brawl (You have to go looking for the online community in question, but once you find them, you're set until the next Smash).
Tatsunoko vs Capcom

These games, on the other hand, still have very active playing communities, but tend to revolve around extremely high level tournament play. If you're willing to put a few years (yes, years) practice into it, you could probably find your way into these games:

Street Fighter (Super II Turbo, HD Remix, Alpha 2/3, III: Third Strike)
Super Smash Bros. Melee
Guilty Gear
Melty Blood
Marvel vs Capcom 1/2

I wouldn't buy one, because they generally get boring quite quickly. I can understand the appeal though and if a friend has one I won't say no
