Just give me a chicken and I'll show you how a manly man fights. Seriously, hand it over...

Now, honestly, I'm convinced a girl--any girl--could take me. I'm that much of a wimp.

When i used to get into fights I would sorta lose myself in a torrential rage. I have studied several martial arts, but after a fight i was in a year ago nothing seems to be able to control this. I seem to always resort to "slam their head in the fucking pavement until they stop moving" kinda tactic. No matter what I learn I seem to resort to this baser self. However, if I'm in a friendly spar, I am able to utilize actual technique.

Have you tried meditating? I had the same problem, my teacher taught me to relax.

yes, unfortunately i have tried this. I have also participated in several energetic based styles, but to no avail. I have long since stopped fighting since I don't like the results.

Have you tried learning to control your Chi? If you have, then send more chi to your mind, and less to the muscles. This helped me.

I've only ever fought friends in an 'out of control argument' type of fight. ie. wrestling and pinning maybe a punch or too but not to the face and no dirty tactics.
In a proper fight I would be prepared to go all out but only if diplomacy has failed.
I get idiots picking fights with me or my friends and I will try and calm everyone down and get between the 2 violent parties in order to stop anything happening.
most fights can be avoided and I have no wish to start a scrap only for someone to pull a knife, that's when things get dangerous

martial artist i am...and according to some military sergeant-a born fighter....
jiu jitsu and muay thai i are :p

i love it. im good at it. and (not through my own choice) get into a fair amount of fights. fortunately, i love the adrenaline rush and all that...

For those that are reading this and are thinking about starting a martial art or learn how to fight, i have one thing to say (and im sure all the fighters on here will agree)
fighting is tough, it is hard, and if you fuck around and dont know what your doing, you will get hurt-only EVER fight with absolute-solid reason. reason that you can examine a hundred times and you will still get to that conclusion.

why? because when you inevitably lose (we all lose at some point) you can say- i did this for a reason.

I play martial arts and I believe in fighting without violence.

I follow the `learning martial arts so you never have to use them` path. It is about being, confident, staying cool, and learning to react.

If someone wants to hurt you, you should use your words to try and calm them down, give them warning (not a threat, warning, softly), that if they force you to, you will end up hurting them, and try to find a way to resolve any differeces without resorting to violence.

If they then attacked, to protect myself, I would try to move out the way, put them in a hold if needs be, and try to get them to calm down. I do not think that using my martial arts to hurt them or incapacitate them is cool or hardcore. I think it is immature and stupid.

Martial arts is not a tool for anger or revenge. Just because you can break a board with your fist, does not mean that you should employ that technique on someone`s spine.

Words are the most potent weapon.

Well... i am trained... Shaolin Kempo Karate mainly but also i am very interested in other styles and techniques. But i am more of a fighting theoretecist(spelling?). I have near to zero combat experience, but i know how to hurt people.

So it depends. Against idiots i can protect myself... but against any experienced fighter i am dead meat. *g*
Ah, a fellow Shorinji kenshi. Didn't know there were more of us on here.

couldnt be put better...but there are people who cant or refuse to be reasoned with. if you can pick this up before then it would just be easier to knock him cold (not dead or incapacitated) and just leave it at that. dont you agree?

The only fights I've been in are a few school brawls. I can fight with a weapon but as a traceur I prefer to flee because it's way more fun.

Fighting with a weapon is pathetically easy. I can fight fairly well as long as whoever I'm fighting isn't too much larger or heavier than me. I'm really good with holds and restraining people aswell.

I am an experienced fighter, in the real and true definition of the term. That is, it is not that I am trained to fight, but that I have had a good deal of fights in my life. Martial arts teach you the discipline of when to fight and WHY to fight. You don't have much experience being the training room until you're outside and someone's out to get you. The funny thing is, I've picked up discipline on my way in. See, any person who was ever trained by Bruce Lee in earnest is VERY GOOD at martial arts (like Karem Abdul-Jabar and Chuck Norris), but the most important thing about what he taught was his philosophy. The way of no way, to be water. So, I know nothing in the sense of martial arts, and can BE anything, potentially. And I have the capability to fight, because I have done so before on many occasions.
