A lot of Final Fantasy hardcore have panned the "autobattle" function of 13. Personally, I go with yea on this; I like that the autobattle hasn't made the game any easier in terms of strategy. Most of the time it just picks three functions I would've used anyway without me having to go through a lot of extra button pushes. I do most of my battlin' manually anyway. But I would like to know what the rest of the fans think. (Or non-fans, for that matter.) Break it down for me people. If you like it, explain why. If not, share your hate with us dear friends. I'd like to restrict the convo to the autobattle function only, if you please. There are a great many threads about the overall quality of the game already.
Not only that, but it allows you to chain together moves quicker and also set them up, ready to press triangle, if you're a ravager and trying to chain enough attacks together to stagger the enemy. I quite frankly love the autobattle function. some battles can't be won without it because they're just so fast paced.

If by good you mean reducing tactical combat to a mindless sludge, then yeah it's great. I, personally, find any game that plays itself to be bad.
Also, why does everyone rave about the paradigm shift? It's virtually identical to the job system from X-2, but with less variation and less control, and nobody got excited over that.

I find myself using it every once in a while but my characters do better if I don't. It is a pretty smart system as it will automatically use whatever attacks you know the enemy is weak to but a lot of times it started making Lightning use magic like Water and Thunder when she already had Waterstrike and Thunderstrike useable for much higher damage.

So it's not perfect but it's a fair trade off for having it just pick everything for you. Sometimes when picking a good string of commands I don't finish before the ATB gauge fills up wasting some time that Auto-battle could've done instantly.

The only thing I have to personally direct is healing because the computer doesn't seem to grasp who needs to be healed in what order.

I like it... just so long as I'm not currently a synergist.

For some reason, even when there's room for more, autobattle loves to use one buff at a time.

In most rpgs I only use the auto battle if I am grinding and feeling lazy. Then again in most rpgs the autobattle is optional. With 13 it doesn't feel very optional. I am trying to figure out a strategy but everything is against me. I have a clock counting down that effects the drop rate. I got some critters constantly beating on me. Not to mention 2 characters of the same class can and do have a different roster of skills. Which means I have to try and remember who can do what out of 8 characters and 6 classes. The only feasible tactic is to autobattle unless I have a very specific strategy in mind (like Death spells). Which has left me feeling more like a spectator than a gamer.

It is really a lazy approach cause it creates a wall between the player and combat. It removes an feeling of involvement in combat. Its almost as bad as civ 4 but without the massive scale.

To address a few of the points made:

The AI will have your characters choose magic over physical even if their strength is higher and would result in more damage if the enemy you're attacking is more susceptible to magical attacks than physical ones. And vice versa.

Medics will prioritise healing anyone with red/yellow HP, then removing debuffs, and finally reviving KOed party members.

Saboteurs cast the same spell multiple times in a row because they don't want to waste a cast on a debuff that isn't going to stick. The more times they cast a spell, the more likely it is that the debuff will be applied to the enemy.

I think the idea behind AI Synergists only queueing one spell at a time sometimes is that they want to apply certain buffs as quickly as possible without waiting for the ATB to fill for another buff.

I like autobattle, but would have preferred at least the option to pause the game in order to issue my orders should I choose to (because as it is it's pretty much impossible) and I'd also like the option to control different characters with the press of a button, like in FFXII. So, autobattle is good, but it needs more choices.

As for the game itself, I'd like to state that I was recently shocked by a small moment which I consider a moment of pure brilliance. I am on Chapter 12 where
the invasion of Eden is taking place
. Amidst all the unbelievable chaos and bloodshed, I found a little NPC girl kneeling in a corner at the side of the road, and, as I approached, she cried: "I lost my doll". For some reason, my jaw dropped right there more than at any other point in the game. I don't know why, maybe it's the extreme contrast of what is actually happening in the game compared to a little girl's only worry, her doll, but fuck me, for all the terrible dialogue in the game this one line just blew me away...

Also, let's be honest here folks. The game has a black guy with a baby chocobo who lives in his afro. FFXIII could sodomise me with an enormous spiky purple dildo and I'd still cuddle it afterwards and ask what we're doing Friday.

Personally, I like to take my time in jrpgs. I'm the type of player who, given the chance, will take bathroom breaks and make sammiches (or heat up leftovers ;) ) in the middle of a fight, and come back in five to leisurely pick what everyone does. I like being able to take five or ten minutes during a fight if I'm stuffing my face or talking on the phone, or holding an argument or conversation with someone else in the room. However, on the flip side, I also like quick options when I'm focusing on grinding up a few levels ( which saddens me greatly about 13 -- where's my hours and hours of grinding?!) or just want to quickly get to the save point so I can be done for the day.

That said, I do like the frenetic pacing. I just want the option to go slow when I feel like going slow. I hate being given a rating on each battle (don't I just feel like I should be going for five stars every time -_- ). I like the creative leap they took with the game, but I'm worried that they might decide that quick paced quick bouts are the way of the future and do away with micromanagement altogether. Macros, macros, macros! Well, for me it leaves a resoundingly 'meh' feeling, and makes me wistful for 6 and 7.

The autobattle feels in some ways necessary, like there's red arrows pointing towards 'paradigm shift time! Hurry up!' . . .which is caused due to the idea that faster = better. I don't consider that a bad thing, but I don't want to feel like I have to use it to save time unless I want to save time. Y'know?

Frankly, I think that auto-battle is just a symptom of the greater problem, which would be the whole combat system. I'm not a fan of it, because if there's an in-game feature that knows what I want it to do MOST of the time, then really, the game just needs me to press A for it. The highlight of my own gameplay experience was when I initiated combat, then went to the kitchen for a drink, taking the controller with me and pressing A every so often. When I returned to the game, I had gotten a 5-star rating out of it.

I've seen at several points in this thread that you don't HAVE to use it. Firstly, that is technically incorrect, unless you've found a way to take over the control of the rest of your party, and secondly if I'm given the option to ride a bike or drive to work, most of the time I'm going to choose to drive. There are times when I don't like the options that auto-battle is giving me and I have to pick them out myself, but if my character is doing anything besides the "commando" role, my ATB gauge has already been full for a couple seconds, and I'm wasting time while the enemy isn't waiting to beat on me, and the battle-timer on the almost completely useless rating system is ticking.
