I was watching G4 earlier and they had a funny skit about a nerd telling a hot chick about final fantasy where the first thing he said was "what you need to know is 7 is the best one". Now I've been playing final fantasy since the nintendo and I would like to say FF7 is not the best. I can understand a lot of people started playing FF when 7 came out, as matter of fact 7 was the reason I got a PSOne. Now I know this sounds like blasphemy to all of you but I'm going to go out on a limb and say Final Fantasy 6 is the best one. First of all the best mechanic to come out of FF7 is the materia system which is a upgrade of the espers from FF6. Second when Aerith died I for one started cheering because she was one of the biggest losers in the game (beside Cait-Sith) I rarely used her when she was alive cause she was ebonically speaking "whack". Third was the pacing of the game. It had 4 discs and it didnt seem there was enough content to warrant 4 discs. For all those that dont know what I'm talking about, I think there was no need for the 4th disc cause all it had on it was the end of the game and you could go back a pick up a few things you may have missed on the way, but if you're like me you had a strategy guide and didnt really need to go back through. Now dont get me wrong I love the game and wished they would make a remake but I'm tired of people saying FF7 was the best. It was the most successful one thats it. Before you all start flaming just understand this is my opinion and yours may be different.

Don't worry, you can put down your flame shield. You're at the Escapist. We've been saying FF7 is lame way before it was cool to say FF7 is lame.

I still say FF9 is the best of that series, but Dragon Warrior VII is my all-time favorite RPG.

I demand another vote so I can say Grandia again. It's a red-hot slice of retro jay-arr-pee-gee action!

I agree, Gandia is awesome, but there is no replacement for the sleepless nights I spent playing star ocean, and loveing every second of it

it's a flaw tiht this poll. it has too many "Good" answers and we only get one vote

What? No Suikoden... it's better than all the others!

But baring Suikoden, Dragon Quest is the best based on the fact that for all intents and purposes it shouldn't be fun, yet it is.

Wow, sadly I disagree and can't vote on any of these because I think the best RPG that has been made was Disgaea 2. The Disgaea series is one of those games I just spent hours and hours playing. The story was okay, the magic system could take a hike for all I cared, but the level cap being as high as it is just makes the game very fun for me. I usually play the Disgaea games with 1 powerful guy, and your allowed up to 10. there are a few moments that suck, like one boss that is just immune to physical attacks, but I'm willing to forgive that because you can teach any char you want nearly every skill in the game, barring a few. Leveling up weapons and armor is a great way to get huge power boosts, and the court system while kinda being a pain in the ass, is really fun when you get strong enough to simply kill everyone there and force whatever you want! I can't wait for Disgaea 3.

Honorable mention goes out to Final Fantasy Tactics. I played that game a lot, and I've known people who played it 10 times more than me. Advanced and Advanced 2 can go suck on a turd, but the first one is still damn fun.

If I were going to vote it would have to be for Breath of Fire. I am a dragon fanatic, and 3 final got the dragon transformations down perfect. I loved that game, and just wish it hadn't died the way it did. With 3 being the best, Dragon quarter #5 in the series was just sad.

I dunno about anybody, besides myself, but Dragon Warrior was something I grew up with, and besides Disgaea, it looks to be one with a bright future. Sorry FF13, your dead to me.

Now I can fault you for not feeling anything at the death of Aeris (first Playable RPG character killed off whom you couldn't revive) but in the world of Hard Core Final Fantasy Fans (Read people who have played... and loved 1-12 (11 doesn't count)) 6 is WELL KNOWN to be the best game in the series. I really liked 9, 10 and 12 though.

Still though, no Suikoden? tsk tsk tsk.

I think that FF7 was one of the good ones. That and IX, X, X-2 and XII. I couldn't choose a best one though.

You know I was about to put Golden Sun but forgot the name lol. Probably should had put that

Thanks for your feedback a lot than what I got when I posted to the G4 forums. I'm glad to see there are good gaming minds on the forums here. I thought I was gonna get flammed out the building when I posted it. Oh and now theres 3 people who like ff9 I loved it. It was a nice throwback to the old school ones. As you can tell my taste go towards the old school, I dont like when a rpg tries to bring in dumb little mechanics to try and sway another audience. Got a question. Who here feels the current gen rpgs out there dont show that staying power like in the old days? Like I can still remember the first time playing chrono trigger and just looking in awe. Nothing has that these days.

I refuse to vote on the count that more than half the titles are Square, Enix or the monstrosity they became.
Where the f**k is Earthbound? Or any game by LeveL 5 who > Square/Enix?

If I HAD to pick though - Secret of Mana.
All you are morons for hopping the FF boat when it has been decidedly been going down since no. 6-7, 8 being mehworthy but decent.
9 and X-2 were unforgivable.

Doesnt matter, I thought it was omitted because it was a really short series (Two games, though apparently they plan on making a third) and yes, youll find this place has a really welcoming atmosphere, if I say so myself. But I get what you mean, Though I still like some things that are new, like Mass Effect is good.

Those 2 were rather good games. I liked them and so do other people.

Holy crap! Two people besides me who liked FFIX.
Nine has its merits, until FFXII it was the most well written Final Fantasy game, too bad the overall plot kinda sucked though.
