I'm working with my university's marketing department as my "Field Experience in Writing" course. I need to take a survey regarding social networking and communication, and I need this information. So, what do most of you prefer? If you can, feel free to say why in a reply.

Could you be more specific as to who you are communicating with? For example, I like Twitter the best because it allows me to follow funny and informative people that I don't know without requiring them to approve me and read my drivel. On the other hand, it's pretty terrible for friend-to-friend conversations.

tl;rd: Is it just for friends or in general?

Facebook, personally. Just the layout is really the selling point to me, and the fact that most people I know use it.

Facebook for me, it's where most of my online interactions take place. I mean, I text on my mobile a lot, but I also use my mobile to check facebook. So it wins.

Facebook. Basically, it allows me to reconnect with old friends and (kind of) socialise* with them. If I want to talk to people I don't know (probably), I'll hop on a forum and at least have a fucking topic.

*Yes, it looks misspelled, but my religion shuns the letter 'z', which can fuck right off.

I use email/steam. I have twitter, but that's mainly just for news.

Actually, socialise is the correct spelling.

I had Facebook, but after being bored to shit of people only ever using it to post about "how much they love eating cereal for lunch", I stopped using it.

After a few months I found out that I had been invited to several events through Facebook but hadn't attended because I never found out about them.

As a result I closed my Facebook account and have never looked back.

I figure if someone wants to invite me to something they can call me, text me or just talk to me about it.

What pissed me off the most is that in the case of one of the events I missed, I had met with the person who invited me 2 days beforehand and they mentioned nothing about it.

It just seems that if you have a Facebook account people assume you actually use it frequently, and that sending a message through Facebook is something that the recipient will definitely see soon.

other: talking face to face, if not possible: telephone

only if you actually talk to someone, you can be sure he got the info.
also, actual talking, with my mouth, not via keyboard, feels much more "social"/natural/desirable to me
actually hanging around with friends, in person, is way more fun than doing so with the computer screen, i.m.o.

This. Nothing more I can really add, but I voted so I guess I should post.

Facebook/Myspace/etc. is a great way to get wrecked and/or embarassed( http://encyclopediadramatica.com/Dox ). So I don't use that.

I would have figured people would remember that from the RealID fiasco that nearly tore a hole in the entire internet. But just like everywhere else, memory is fairly short.

Texting is okay when you're in a room full of people and don't want to be that asshat who has a loud ass conversation and annoys everyone, but highly inefficient as a primary means of communication.

I keep an address book with me at nearly all occasions, except for when I'm in the bath...

...but that can be changed as quickly as a gentleman caller inquiring at odd hours of the night! As much as I frown upon such shenanigans at such an ungodly hour, "a stone in the hand is worth two in the bush", my father would always say!

If only I had a sizable dowry, I would be looked upon more favorably by all and sundry...

Social networking is a cancer on the internet.
It's like Rudolph's red nose, everybody likes it... but yeah, it's still cancer.

EDIT: Hey kettle, that pot called you black.

I refuse to do any online social networking if only to continue to drive my friends and girlfriend crazy.

Agreed. Of course now I'm a hippocrit because I'm not talking to you IRL. Oh well.
(BTW that was a joke. I DO agree with you. Actually, thats another problem with these IM things. Its pretty easy to misunderstand someone.)
