I think the game should have ended with John dying, and Jack's revenge could be either in a different game or nonexistent. But yeah John is so much better.

The voice acting for Jack is awful really. John is a way better character in a lot of ways.

Here's how I made Jack more playable; When I played the game as John I wore the duster costume 90% of the time. When I was forced to play as Jack I tried putting him in the duster but it felt wrong. Plus all the NPC's were talking to him like he was the great hero I made his father become. SO! I changed his clothes to the Deadly Assassin outfit (GameStop pre-order) and started riding the black horse (American something?). I also killed a bunch of people and lost his honor so people wouldn't walk by saying great undeserved things about Jack. Yes, that's how upset I was.

You play the entire game with John, so I picked John. I just don't feel any connection to a character who's non-existent in 80% of the game, is a whiny ***** in 15% and suddenly grows up for the last 5%.

Thank you MiracleOfSound, That is what I was looking for :) I am going to go back and do it again but change it up a little. See what happens. Although, I was thinking... They really didn't leave it open for a RDR2 did they?
Well yeah, I think they're going the GTA route for this, a different story for each game with different characters...and this technically is the 2nd game in the series. (Red Dead Revolver)

John Marston...no question about it. His voice, his scars, his badassness (stop looking at me, not gay). When I found out he dies I restarted the game so I can do everything I can possibly do with John till he has to die, sucks that the devs made it so only Jack can do certain things...grrr.

Protip: Jack Marston is John Marston, his actual name is John "Jack" Marston.

John, i dont know Jack, granted i helped him Hunt and stuff, but he hadn't had the time to grow on me like John did, and his little Sayings just annoy me. though i was getting a bit pissed off at John the way he kept treating Uncle, it just didn't feel right.

Ending was great, "Blessed are the Peacemakers"

Jack Marston, because I felt when playing John that I was forced into a certain role. As John, I could not be a bandito because it did not feel right - that part of John's past was behind him. However, Jack has the motivation to murder innocents; it's just up to the player to decide what they wish to do.

This.
John Marston seemed to be the natural protagonist, whereas Jack is like a blank slate. Maybe his father's death will inspire him to become a do-gooder, or maybe this is what drives him over the edge until he is a badass rebel, hell bent on murdering every agent of order in the West.

Undecided. Hopefully some DLC will expand on his story a little.

Side note: The second time I walked out of the barn and into the hail of bullets, the game glitched and instead of going into Dead Eye, we just stood there staring each-other(s) down. For a solid minute, we just looked at each other and then finally, Dead Eye kicked in and I got a solid 15 guys before they finally got me - "...de honkies shot me!" Kudos to anyone who can name the NBC TV show reference that the last line came from.

I enjoyed getting revenge for my father, but I feel like that John wouldn't want that lifestyle for his son. I liked what they did with the ending.

John for obvious reasons, but I do like Jack. I really do feel sorry for him, he started out as a literate, reasonably smart person, understandably cynical with his father after leaving him for a time, and he wants to grow up to be a writer to prove that he's not just some whore's son.

But then his father gets gunned down by the army, and the player takes control of him from then on. He's given up on that dream to have the life of a gunslinger.

Like father, like son.

It really made me feel sorry for him, though his voice should have aged appropriately.

I don't know which one I like more, probably John because I got so attached to the character and never got a real chance to know Jack. looking at it from a western standpoint it was a perfect ending. spare me the "oh it was so obvious" lines please. a well done story doesn't necessarily need a twist, it needs to finish right. John dying made me sad a little inside seeing as I did everything I could to make him turn the page and start a new life again, only to have it stripped from him for his previous misdeeds. but when Jack grows up(albeit only a couple years) to get revenge I remembered why I love westerns in the first place. redemption, betrayal and revenge(not always in that order) are just fun concepts to play with. That being said, I think I'm gonna go watch the outlaw josey wales now...

He's only 19...what did you want him to sound like?

John Marston. I just can't get over that stupid little porno goatee that Jack wears at the end.

I'm 15 and I have a voice deeper than the ocean. Maybe a little more deep and it would make a bit more sense, as is it sounds a bit too high pitched. After all, people tend to get out of puberty at around 16-19 if I know my biology correctly (which most likely I don't).

John is definitely the cooler of the two, tho I was pleased to see the end of the game actually made me a bit sad, quite an accomplishment to get an emotional reaction from me out of a videogame.

John Marston is way better than his son. Apparently Jack did not grow out of the high pitched voice that he had when he was 15. Plus John looks so much cooler in a duster.
The voice is incredibly annoying, especially when Jack is yelling at his horse to go faster.
