I think both FPS's and "TPS's" can be pretty good. And both have advantages over the other. FPS: aiming is smoother and more natural, but you don't necessarily know what your character looks like.

TPS: aiming CAN be smoother, you get to see your character, but there is a tendency for the camera to get screwy on you.

FPS. Definitely FPS.

TPS breaks the immersive aspect which I love about FPS games, and also most TPS games seem much more clumsy.

Either or for me. The FPS is more generic but if well done it won't bore you to much if you can get past the bad story if it is there much of one.

TPS's are not bad but most of the time they have to have a gimmick if they are to be fun or control well. These seems to be harder to program for, because I can not think of too many good TPS's that I enjoy playing, while I have more FPS's that I go back to constantly.

1st person as then you don't have your characters body, head and gun taking up a lot of the screen.
Yeah, how small is your screen?? I don't have a problem :).

I voted for TPS because I've found in general most of the third-person games (not always shooters) are better quality. A lot of the FPS games I've been playing recently are just generic shooters that are practically copy-pastes of games like CS with some different graphics and names.

Lots of people say they feel more "connected" to the character when it's a first person game. I feel the other way, since when you're in a FPS you don't even know what your character looks like for most of the game, and often enough they'll say about jack-shit which makes it even harder to connect with them. Plus you don't see yourself DOING anything, you usally point your gun at something and some text appears saying you're doing X. The characterization/personality of your character is just that he's some generic-super soldier who kills people. Yeah, that's easy to identify with. Oh, and have you noticed you can't see your own legs when you look down?

Third person games (MGS4 is a great example of this) you see your character going everywhere/doing everything. Also you get a lot better understanding/appreciation for the environment and maps you're playing in.

Though I do admit when it comes to online I prefer FPS since it's pretty much easier than TPS. Though I wish another good game like Battlefront would come out where you had the option of either.

To me, a shooter is a shooter.

I enjoy single player a bit more than multiplayer. Recently, third person games tend to have slightly better stories IMO, and I can empathize more with characters in TPS, but there are always exceptions.

There's always good and bad in either genre.
