Yeah, I'll totally jump on the freerunning bandwagon, once I have the balance to master the stairs...

In other words, no, and I think that doing it "for fun" is foolish. Perhaps if there was a need for such things, but unless there's cops or something chasing you. Take the stairs, not the wall...

I wish I could do it...I'm not even close to the shape needed to do it. Well, in any cool way.

In the city I'm in, it's pretty hard to practice parkour or freerunning. And freerunning and parkour are the same. Parkour means "Freerunning" in French.
Oh, most definitely not. There are differences.
Parkour is about getting from A to B as efficiently as you can. free running is about getting from A to B as artistically as you can.
no its true, parkour is french for free running

Sorry, but most people disagree. There's been a big split in the PK/FR scene since Sebastien Foucan (freerunner) and David Belle (traceur) got in an argument and split up.

I want to learn Parkour SO much. But, there aren't any good places around and I don't know how I would learn it. Are there places that teach you or is it entirely self-taught?
You can just play Assassins Creed and learn the tricks from there.

I do a bit of parkour, only a few hours a week but its a good way of challenging myself and keeping my fitness up.
Its not as dangerous as everybody thinks as long as you know what your limits are and don't push yourself a long way past them. As long as you are careful and don't rush into things without thinking about it first you are not that likely to hurt yourself.

And for those who don't know the difference between parkour and freerunning:
Parkour is the more pure form of the sport. It is much more focussed on getting from A to B as efficiently as possible.
Freerunning on the other hand is much more trick based with the emphasis much more on style and tricking.

It can look pretty cool in proper films and the like, but judging from several amateur youtube vids, the kids doing it are too often so far up their own ass their body is basically just a hat.

I do it ocassionally, but only because I have a friend who's very into it and I love to go tracing (I supposed that's what it could be called... traceuring doesn't sound right) with him.
But so far, I've only actually needed it twice in my life, and only to get to the train on time.
I'm not the typical "Parkour is ART" type of douchebah who thinks parkour is some godly activity. I just think it's more interesting to do one of the fancier vaults to jump over a fence than to just put my leg over it.

not true. I know French, and parkour doens't mean that. In fact, I think the word possibly comes from parcours du combatant (typical military obstacle course)

How so?
people who try to re-enact Mirror's Edge usually end up as splats on the pavement. Seriously. It isn't a good idea.

At the risk of flaming.

Why are traceurs so self important?

A free running thread pops up every couple of months, the OP always being all "hey check out my new sport it's totally awesome in case you didn't know anyone else out here partake in my superawesome new sport? For those that don't know it's called this..."
It's getting on my nerves, there must be hundreds of BMXers, climbers, skaters, snowboarders, MTBers, skiers and such on the Escapist, but you hardly ever hear from them? Even though their respective sports are just as valid, demanding, skillful and (more) dangerous.

Why are the Free Runners so desperate for everyone to know what they do? Why can't they stop being so self congratulatory and just get on with it like everyone else?

Also why does your poll have no 'I know what it is but I don't do it' option? The sport is not so super awesome that everyone feels compelled to take it up once they find out about it.

Anyway, if your're looking for an international community/forum: http://www.worldwidejam.tv/parkour.forum.html

More US centric: http://www.americanparkour.com/smf/index.php

Have fun. Now be off with you!

i'd love to do it, but this city doesn't really have anywhere to do it, and as far as i can tell, there are no clubs for it anyway.

you need to include an option for "i'd like to"

I like Mirrors Edge.

I didn't get that film with the big free running scene, there' no way they would have been able to keep up with him or know where he went!
