I've been on the Escapist around a year now, and before Mirror's Edge came out, there was narry ever a thread on this.

So keep in mind I'm taking everything anyone says with a grain of salt.

I've done a fair amount of PK though with little to no skill whatsoever (I'm blessed with the agility and grace of a blind drunk)
My friends are really into it and so i always end up trying to mimick whatever they attempt.
Makes some great failure footage.

anways, no i think its idiotic.
How so?
people who try to re-enact Mirror's Edge usually end up as splats on the pavement. Seriously. It isn't a good idea.
You're mistaking Natural Selection for stupidity.
good call, but still it is kind of idiotic. what if you miss your next jump? broken leg? shattered spine? squish? too many ifs that involve bodily harm and death. no way am I going to do that.

Parkour doesn't mean anything in French.

But if you spell it 'Parcour' it is, in fact, when you run in a straight line. But if there's something in your way you jump it or go over it.

But you don't go out of your way to look flashy, you just run.

And that is the literal meaning of the word

Genius ^^

And I'm interested, but I fear I may lose my manhood in a tragic accident involving a fence o_0

The only time I participate in that is if i'm chasing someone or being chased, the only reason it should be used in my opinion.
Hear, hear! I used to live out in the countryside, and I did parkour all the time, when being chased by Farmer Joe and his deranged wife, susan-Annabell. Man, those hayballs were tough!

At the risk of flaming.

Why are traceurs so self important?

A free running thread pops up every couple of months, the OP always being all "hey check out my new sport it's totally awesome in case you didn't know anyone else out here partake in my superawesome new sport? For those that don't know it's called this..."
It's getting on my nerves, there must be hundreds of BMXers, climbers, skaters, snowboarders, MTBers, skiers and such on the Escapist, but you hardly ever hear from them? Even though their respective sports are just as valid, demanding, skillful and (more) dangerous.

Why are the Free Runners so desperate for everyone to know what they do? Why can't they stop being so self congratulatory and just get on with it like everyone else?

Also why does your poll have no 'I know what it is but I don't do it' option? The sport is not so super awesome that everyone feels compelled to take it up once they find out about it.

Anyway, if your're looking for an international community/forum: http://www.worldwidejam.tv/parkour.forum.html

More US centric: http://www.americanparkour.com/smf/index.php

Have fun. Now be off with you!
Well fucking put.
Pretty much sums up exactly how I feel about the 'sport'.

Might be interesting to try but i don't think I would ever go out of my way to parkour or freerun. I honestly wasn't aware that there was any sort of organization in parkour or freerunning(or that it was a sport).

I have started to freerun recently, and find it to be quite a bit of fun. And yes, those that do it to emulate Mirror's Edge need to die (and probally will). I really like it just because it's fun thing to do with friends, even when you bust your ass.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to advertise to new people, just to find the traceurs and freerunners already on the site to get to know them better, talk a little, learn some.

I don't have to justify myself to you guys, talk about my personal life to feel validated, you're just some people on the internet.

But Parkour is FUN. And it also comes in handy when people who hate Parkour(You guys)come after me.

It seems rather Philosophical. Your running towards something in the most efficient way possible, escaping reality and the world whilst doing so.

I'm obsessed with parkour, but since I want to master all physical movement, I do a bit of free running because it's fun but if I need to get somewhere it's parkour all the way.

I would like to try Parkour sometime, but I'm in such bad shape that I'd probably kill myself.
I'l have to go with this. I'm just a skeleton held together with more skin then muscle.

Parkour interests me but I live in the suburbs so I don't get many opportunities to try it.
