Is realism really that necessary if you can have fun in a game? 'Cause you can have the most realistic shooter in the world, where you take around three bullets to die and the weapons are exactly as they are in real life, but if it isn't fun, who's going to buy it?

It would depend on what you want.

If I wanted to know what it was to be a pilot, I would but a flight simulator known for realism, instead of a simulator that has been deemed fun.

i have always been of the opinion that it's fun that makes games fun. realism can't make anything more fun, just more realistic. if it's fun and realistic then thats generally an excellent combination.

I find realism fun, too. GTA 4 is my favorite GTA.

But I don't mind if a game is unrealistic, I love Saints Row 2 and Team Fortress 2.

I don't really see the argument... Do you want a FPS were you will die after taking 11 (maybe 2 or 3 depending were) hits, or do you want one thats fun... And if you find realism fun then... Well... Wait, I've confused myself... I shall retire to my lair!

If the steps necessary to ensure realism hinder fun, then there is an issue. These things are not really incompatible though.

This seems like an odd question. Fun is pretty much the entire point of games. Otherwise, they'd just be training simulations at best, real life at worst.

There are times I prefer realism, and there are times where I just want to play some fantasy game. For "fun" I'm guessing you mean unrealistic? I like unrealistic games more.

When realism gets in the way of fun then i have a problem but I prefer to have a fun game of realistic game.

Three words: Sands. Of. Time. If I want realism, I'll sign up for the armed forces suicide brigade or whatever.

I definitely like a mix, but if you chose realism i think you missed the point of video games

Yeah, I have to agree here. I'm sure the words 'entertainment' and 'fun' are somewhere in the definition of 'game,' lemme check...

oh look at this: ?noun 1. an amusement or pastime: children's games.

problem solved.

Uh, fun. I live in the real world, you don't get much more realistic than that, so why the hell would I want realism in my fantasies? I don't even want realism in real life, that's why I view it in fictional terms. Also, Mario, Zelda, Metroid, many FPS's (they may try to be realistic by making everything brown, but health kits and portable arsenals aren't realistic), RPG's, and countless other games aren't realistic, but they are fun and have good art, and that's what matters.

I do like some scientific accuracy, however. Just a buff about that.
