This poll is kinda dumb. I prefer realism, which makes the games I like fun to me. This is a fail flame poll.

Is realism really that necessary if you can have fun in a game? 'Cause you can have the most realistic shooter in the world, where you take around three bullets to die and the weapons are exactly as they are in real life, but if it isn't fun, who's going to buy it?
Your poll is very biased, and therefore failtastic. For people who like to play CoD in Hardcore, it is more fun to have a realistic game, so it is both. If a guy wants a game like section 8 where you have massive amounts of health, then have at it. Just don't pretend your preference is superior like an ass and create a troll thread >.>

Fun is crucial. Realism can be strived for to a point, but it will decrease the fun if taken too far. Keep in mind that if you do go with "true realism" the game still has to be playable, so the character will have to be better than his opponents in some way to avoid getting *****-slapped every time he faces two foes at once. Besides, most escapism focuses around having fantasies of being some unrealistically awesome character; why destroy that? I will admit, some games can endeavor to have total realism and still be fun, but these should probably be in the "survival-horror" or "stealth" genre, where you usually attempt to avoid fighting everything you come across because it will kill you.

On the other hand, games can approach realism to a limit and still be sweet. In STALKER, it took about 2 bullets to kill your stupid ass, but the game was immersive and deep enough to keep me going. Counter-Strike likewise took a somewhat realistic approach to weapon accuracy and damage. So, it's all about design, and sometimes the skill of the target audience.

I would say realism can destroy a game like God of War too, but then again, I played it on the hardest difficulty, where a single axe to the face pretty much does kill you. So I guess realism and high-difficulty can be attractive to some audiences.

Soap box time
in race or fighting sims realismm adds to fun. but in a game like say crackdown the realism would have made that gta. And with graffics they dont much mater and is anoying when someone tells me the did like the grffics so they dont like the game.cant imagine what they would have been like in the 8-bit era, probly doing something lame like building relationships and makeing life goals.

Well obviously I can't Vote on the poll because it's options are "Real" and "fun". I think realistic game play is fun in some cases. It depends on the game and the type of content in the game. For example :

COD 4 needs realistic elements because it forces the players to use extreme tactics and cover. This is the type of game Call of Duty is, and it is fun, but games like TF2 don't have very many realistic elements because they require the game to be played in a different way ( using different types of skill and talents with each class to win.)

It all depends on what the developers and the players want out of the game. This poll is biased and it is totally not needed. Some games need realism and some don't, it is all what experience you want. So I suggest no one vote on the poll because it is :

1. Not needed.

2. Biased ( I mean just look at the options)

3. This is just going to be a giant ass flame war.

Just depends on my mood I spose. Some times I'll feel like playing ghost recon for example, but alternitavely other times I might feel like playing God Of War (which are my favourite games) for its setting and over the top action. And The Specialist halflife mod rocked. crazy over the top action, a shame few people play it anymore.

Obviously people want games that are fun, and to many people, realism can make a game fun. The choices aren't very well designed when it comes to that. Maybe one for "Realism is fun" and "Realism isn't so fun" would be better.

I don't care for realism on the basis that there can't be a giant uber huge kick ass cannon that launches you halfway across the planet.

I like realism a lot more on the physics side. If someone gets shot and launched from a building I love seeing the rag doll flipping and landing. That's why I love source games so much.

This thread has been done to death... I'm fairly sure KeaneNG wrote an article fairly recently on exactly this topic :S

I prefer fun. Thats why i prefer Saints Row to GTA. However, a game like Heavy Rain for instance, i think looks very fun.

What kind of question is that? Are you seriously asking "is it better to make a game more realistic even if it makes it less fun?" Video games are all about fun, that's the whole point! If a game isn't fun, then what's the point of playing it at all?

Here's where it gets more complicated. Not everyone has the same idea of fun. Some people might enjoy games that are as realistic as possible, while other people might like something that's very exaggerated or over-the-top. Personally I can enjoy either, depending on either my mood or the context of the game.

Basically, your question will be interpreted differently by people with different tastes. A person who prefers unrealistic games will most likely say "to hell with realism, I'll enjoy this game more without it," and a person who prefers realistic games will say "there's no question, realism and fun are the same to me."

Realism and fun, I think the key to a game is that its enjoyable. As long as it is, I dont bother much about the realism, its just a plus

Fun, always. I can turn to games for platforming races in space against a mexican chef with a sentient hat, and if I want realism I go outside.

Who the hell voted against FUN? ...Isn't that kinda the entire purpose of video games as a whole?

That's not to say realistic games cannot be fun, for example CoD4 is more realistic (and fun) than Halo 3, but come on, you voted against FUN?!?!
