How many people think anthropomorphic animal characters are inevitably related to furry "culture"?
Personally I like anthro characters, stuff like Starfox. I also draw them sometimes. This does not make me a furry as far as I'm concerned. Furry as a label needs to be reserved for the more extreme stuff.

People who have a fetish for anthro animals = Furry.
People who think they're a badger in the body of a 13 yr old boy = Furry.
People who can't have enjoyable sex without a massive goofy looking fur suit = Furry.

The first time I heard the term was whenh it was used to describe the fursuit sexual fetish. I imagine that's where many people would have first heard it too.

Actually no, the term was created around the enjoyment of the art style. So by your own faulty logic, you are a furry.

I think you mean "despite" my faulty logic. If you want to try insulting me you may want to double check what you're saying makes sense.

Not to mention I don't recall speculating about the actual origin of the term. I asked what most people consider to be a furry, and stated what I think the term should encompass.

As for the reason I don't consider myself a furry. I fail to see how appreciation of something is cause to give myself a label or join a group/fandom. I especially find it odd since furry, or anthro art is not a style of art, its a subject.
Sure I like reading Redwall and playing Starfox, but no more than any other game. If someone likes still life paintings, do they really need to differentiate themselves from portrait or landscape fandom?

All this talk has me wondering if there's a fandom out there for anthropomorphised kitchen appliances in art.

Most furries don't have sex in costume. It's not nearly as common as people believe it is. Mainly because it's not really appealing unless you have the specific costume-fetish, but also because those suits are REALLY expensive.

Frightening, why? I'm a furry, so what? I've never worn a suit, mind you. And I while I would never have sex in one, I do plan to own one someday.

I think it's just because of the general attention. Its like how people think it's all porn simply because that's what pop's up if you google it.

I get that it's more of an identifying with an animal side or RP'ing as an animal or whatever but it's obvious the copious amounts of anthro porn doesn't help the image...

I particularly hate all the furries that believe their so called "fetish" entitles them to special treatment or other nonsense of the sort. It's perfectly alright to be a furry. It's also perfectly alright to hate them with a passion. Anyone who believes otherwise is the real bigot.
