If you bought a new game, at what difficulty will you start playing it? I started wondering this when I noticed a friend of mine always starts at the highest possible difficulty.

Hard. Not the highest, but I consider myself better than the average gamer.

Unless that game is Ninja Gaiden.

I usually start on normal. Then I'll go on higher difficulty after I make a first run through the game.

I always start at the highest possible difficulty -I'm real hardcore- but when I fail miserably, as I always do, I drop the difficulty level.

i usually go for normal, it's difficult without getting in the way of learning how to do stuff. once i've beaten normal, i step it up a notch.

I usually start on normal so I can cruise through the game and get the story, after that I ramp it up the progressive levels of difficulty for a challenge.

I like to play on Hard since I play a lot of games and thus have developed a knack for figuring out how to play each one well, as well as building up a library of useful tactics. Being around a corner from the big angry men with guns is one of the most universal... <.<

However, there are of course games that set the bar ludicrously high; usually they're made by Team Ninja for Team Ninja, and if anyone else manages to figure out how to play them for more than two minutes without dying at least once, that's a bonus. In these instances, I tend to go with the easiest difficulty I can find, since I play for fun and challenge, not to show off. I like to unlock and complete secret difficulty levels, but only if they're interesting (like Mental difficulty in Serious Sam TFE).

So dont you think that when you start at normal or higher, easy mode is wasted since you'' hardly find any challenge in that?

I beat it on normal so I know the basic controls and structure of the game before attempting to tackle it on hard / very hard.

I usually stick to easy. I can play on normal and whatnot but I'd prefer not to get worked up over frustrating parts. I'm all about having fun, not testing my gamer skills.

I start mine on normal, to play though the game. If it's too easy, I ramp it up to hard.

When I'm bored and done 2 playthroughs, very hard.

Usually hard. That way I'll have a challenge, while still having replay value later by playing very hard...

Of course this changes from game to game. For example: I started Empire: Total War, which I'm plaing now, on very hard due to me being familiar with the Total War series from before, and the fact that on lower difficulties I win to easily...

On console, the medium/normal setting. I am not console-macho.

On PC, extra hard. Because I'm just going to cheat anyway.

Guess I'm not PC-macho either.

I start on Very hard, mostly just to get all the achievements that come with playing the game on the hardest difficulty.
Oh, and practice for multiplayer.
